Lola Sports Photo Essay – Niners v Jets: Parting the Red Sea

Our good friend Roof made his way out to the Meadowlands last Sunday and looks like he had more fun outside the stadium than from the inside.  Check out his excellent photo essay, replete with motorized beer coolers, parking lot pushups, throngs of Niners fans, free tacos and much more.

This kid is 19... could easily be growing pains - aka not that big a deal

this is bad. very bad. concealing an injury just before the draft is bad enough in itself. but the red flags were there. he pulled lame in a knicks workout just prior to the draft. maybe he should have been checked by the knicks? i think so. with the 4th pick you DO NOT want to take a risk in that situation. pozingis odiously wanted to downplay this injury but odiously its more serious than what the knicks knew or they were have grabbed any number of other big men. i liked turner myself even at number 4. it looks like the knicks DID NOT due due diligence.

How could he have been concealing it if he didn't finish his pre draft workout with the Knicks. Don't you think the Knicks questioned and evaluated the situation.

Would've been nice to watch Porzingis compete against NBA-caliber (or something close to that) players in Summer League. But the kid has nearly three months to prepare for the season, and opting out of playing in Eurobasket will lessen the risk of further injury. Like others here, I'm deeply suspicious of the the Knick medical staff.

Sign Shved fan club. Anyone in.

Signing Shved seems like a no brainer for the Knicks.  A tall guard who can handle the ball and shoot at a good clip.

I don't understand the hesitation quite frankly since it's not a lot of money.

Best part of last year, was seeing this Kid play. Phil Jackson said it himself.

if this guy was so great why wasn't he given a contract?

@j_spikett He was very good for the Knicks though.  In 16 games for the Knicks he was 14.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 3.6 apg in 26.4 min. That is really good by any standards.

nyoak34

@j_spikett @BDarc23 Because they didn't want to use cap space until they knew what they had to offer. Now they know.

j_spikett
j_spikett

@nyoak34 @j_spikett @BDarc23 they signed a shooting guard who is four years older coming off a sub par year for 8 million a year. they could of had him for a lot less than that. that is telling you they must not of thought that highly of him to sign someone else at his position for more than twice the money. he is in effect an afterthought that they took a huge risk in losing if in fact they have not lost him already.

If Porzingis doesn't make it....then another potential player....gets a look and another spot gets filled possibly on Westchester.

Phil isn't getting any/enough credit for Westchester, BTW.....

bkyguy78

The biggest mistake Phil has made so far, was not pushing harder for the entire medical staff to be fired. Instead he let Dolan make that choice.

tkbjimbo
tkbjimbo

Phil, still undecided on who to pick to "Destroy that team up", finally saw the light within Kristaps Porzingis once Porzingis started to get hurt during his workout.

"He's definitely not ready for the NBA, but the clincher was that he got hurt during our workout." Phil said to his assistants while choosing his pick for the upcoming draft to assure the knicks "were destroyed".

Well, if there is any group of individuals we can trust with medical expertise to tell us the truth, it's the Knicks medical staff.

Not what you want already from your 4th overall pick who many are concerned over his fragile physique, wanted to see him play in the Summer league.

Don't do anything stupid if he has an injury.  Why are some writing this kid off because of this?  Yeah, it would be disappointing if he doesn't play this week, but it's not that big a deal in the overall scheme of things.

What I want to no is 1 good move Jackson has made since being a knick. We would have been better off he did absolutely nothing since he got here.

His first move of signing Melo was a mistake.

Declaring us a playoff team last year huge mistake

Trading chandler made us a worse team and gave us less cap space this summer because of the awful Calderon contract

And I'm still not sure why we traded shumpert and smith. They where both free agents and we got nothing in return. To my knowledge he didn't get us cap space like he said he did he actually got us less cap, space and traded expiring contracts for no reason (chandler, shump, smith)

Plus we paid Jackson all this money to attract free agents which he hasn't done. He had 27 million dollars this summer so he has to get players. He gave robin Lopez a big contract anyone could have done that. The only good deal has been afflalo which again anyone could have done.

Porzingis might have been good but melo makes it bad. And you can't really judge draft picks a couple week after they happened. Maybe I'm forgetting something but every trade he has made has either hurt us or done nothing for us. And the melo signing seems like a mistake. And let's face it if you have 27 million dollars in cap space and u spend all that money on afflalo and Lopez that's a failure. You expect that kind of money to at the minimum get you a borderline all star not 2 bench players. That is why we paid him 60 million and put all our hope in him.

It seemed like every summer runways found a gem in free agency whether it was Copland. Jeremy Lin, Kenyon Martin, even jr smiths first contract here for the minimum was great value.

Gunwald surprised everyone with chandler his absolute biggest mistake gunwale made was amnesty ink billups instead of amare. If we kept billups amnestied amare signed chandler and had billups extra 12 million in cap, space the previous summer this probably would have worked out. But anyway Jackson unless I'm wrong and forgetting something hasn't done one positive thing so far. And if you say Lopez was it the guy had 27 million he had to get something. It shouldn't be hard to get a role player

John Munro
John Munro

Jackson did tell us his goal was to build during free agency not the draft a month ago.

And he built with 2 role players that wouldn't even get mins on the Warriors, Spurs, or cavs. So free agency was a failure when u spend 27 million on players that wouldn't play on the top 3 contenders that's an awful free agency period.

And he built using the draft. It seems like he has no plan and he's just winging it as he goes along.

The Knicks have no cap space and spent 27 million this summer and outside of melo don't have 1 role player that could play on any of those teams when that happens that's an awful rebuild idk how people are saying he's doing a good job he had to sign someone

Dude it never fails. Every blog your posting just about the same comment. Not to mention your post are WAY longer then the article itself. Stop with your negativity please! Its understandable to have opinions but you talk as if your a scout. If you really dont like the direction the team is going in then i suggest you cheer for the Nets.

Give the team a chance. Season hasnt started yet. Watch the summer league game on Saturday and voice your opinion then. Phil has been here ONE year! Give the man a break

John Munro
John Munro

@nyminute  yes u should continue. I will agree Grant was a good move. But it's hard to judge a draft pick trade a couple weeks after.

The Shved deal was good but it doesn't mean anything if we don't resign him.

and i'm not realy sure why we traded Shump and Smith for 2 seconds rounders when Mozgov got 2 first rounders. You really think Jacksons decisions so far have been good?

every move basically has contradicted his so called plan hence I don't think he has a plan

John Munro
John Munro

@Alan Alford  don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm not going to become a spur fan. but face the facts the knicks didn't do anything this summer did you honestly expect they wouldn't sign 1 player?

They had 27 million dollars in cap space and they spent it on guys that wouldn't be a role player on the top 3-4 contenders in the league. I'm not sure how good your building for the future when that's the case. And when we knew we had 27 million we didn't think we would get Lopez and afflalo. Ya there ok players but its hard not to get ok players with that money Phil didn't do anything special anyone could have gotten those players with that money.

His job is to sell the Knicks. Like I said I don't think he's ruined the Knicks I don't think where in a position as of today where  are screwed for the next 4 seasons With Porzingis and Grant and Melo as a trade asset it's not impossible to think that we could build a team to compete for the next 10 years.

But as of now every move outside of Grant has been awful.

Will see about Shved I guess that was a good move but what does that trade matter if we don't resign him.

John Munro
John Munro

@BDarc23 @John Munro @Alan Alford  my point on the last thread was to trade melo at the trade deadline for young guys.

my point this time is Phil hasn't really done a good job it doesn't seem like he has a real vision of what to do. And the Knicks had 27 million dolllars in cap space they obviously had to sign a couple people, but with that 27 million all they got was mediocore role players. That's a failure to not get at least a borderline all star. When you consider the players we got wouldn't get any mins on the 3-4 biggest contenders in the NBA idk how you can sell the fact that we spent 27 million dollars with no really solid role players as a success.

The Spurs Warriors and the Cavs are what you have to compare yourself to. And name one player outside of Melo that could play over 15 mins a game on those teams. We don't have 1 and we spent 27 million dollars. That's sad. How do you have good building blocks when they couldn't play on the top teams. How do you spend 27 millon and not get a solid player

Alan Alford

Become a Spur Fan dude. Seems like You can't handle being a Knick Fan. The season hasn't started yet. Gotta give Jax a chance. Now it's his Team. His players. Players he traded where not gonna make us Champs. Lopez and Affalo are good signings.

jeandd323
jeandd323

@John Munro @nyminute We traded Shump because we wanted to get rid of JR contract - in case he opted in.

Jax figured that we would have lost Shump anyway. In hind sight, he was right. We would never have matched the offer he got from the Cavs

You're saying Lopez and Afflalo wouldn't play on any of the top teams? You're clearly a troll. Afflalo would easily start for the cavs. Lopez would for sure be a rotation player on each of those teams and could start over bogut, if you don't understand anything about the game just keep your thoughts to yourself. You sound silly.

Every trade has hurt us ?!? So Shved and 2 second round picks for a player who might not even play in the NBA this year.. or Hardaway for Grant on draft night .. should i continue

NeedANewGMHCQB
NeedANewGMHCQB

@jeandd323 @John Munro @nyminute true and true. JR was a cancer on this team. partying, untying opponents shoelaces, resisting the offense. addition by subtraction. the team being put together now is one in which the sum will be better than the parts. jax wants them to play a team game. And defensively, with Jerian Grant at the PG spot and Lopez at the rim, will be much, much better.

BDarc23

@John Munro @Alan Alford Why do you feel the need to repeat the same thing multiple times in every thread though?  Your point is made and comes across loud and clear the 1st time.

i think Phil wants to rebuild and solidify the defense FIRST AND FOREMOST, while banking on Porzingis being the TRUE "steal" of the draft and highest possible ceiling/upside of any player in this class besides Towns and Russell...i think he truly believes that he can make Melo more efficient and an even BETTER scorer if he fully adapts to and learns the triangle...i think he wanted a floor general PG that can play defense as well, and got that in Grant...i think he wants a true TEAM, all players who "know their role" and do what they're supposed to do... if you look at his BUlls teams and his Lakers teams, each player pretty much filled and flourished in their role...and finally, i dont think he had any REAL hope (doesnt mean he didnt TRY, but he probably realized it was a tremendous uphill battle) of signing a BIG MAX mega star this year, because i think, somehow, someway, he believes he/we have a shot at Durant this next off season...

i dont know how true that is, it could even be LAUGHABLE.. but something is telling me that his plan is to build a TEAM this off season, show everyone on the team their ROLE, show the rest of the league that something is brewing in MSG finally, and that whoever joins this team will know their place exactly pretty much, and once he shows some consistency, some signs of them settling in, bringing in a max star to become a NY MEGA star will be easier... because the team as is now (maybe adding a Shved and/or Butler too), would be an Atlantic title contender if you just added Durant... personally, i dont think we have a shot at Durant, or pretty much ANY REAL TRUE MAX SUPERSTAR, but i think that is what PHIL is thinking... if Porgs and Jerian pan out, suddenly this team is a lot more attractive to upcoming free agents... i know it's hard to be optimistic and keep hope with this team, but at this point, thats all us Knicks fan can do!

nyminute

O'Quinn trade is a bad trade in your eyes as well im assuming . . We swapped second round picks and got a good young hard nose player. Kid fights for board's, he's a skilled passer, and is a good rim protector. Also shot 49% from 10 feet last season. And is only in his 3rd year at 25. Just because you never watched the kid play doesn't mean he's not worth the money. Which his 4 year 16 million salary is a steal seeing the cap is rising.

And Shved wants to come back to NY, he said he appreciated the opportunity Phil gave him and he was beginning to grasp the triangle offense. Even if we dont resign the guy, we still got 2 second round picks from that trade. The Shump and JR trade had to be done. The only trade i can say Phil lost in is Calderon. But besides that as another person said, he's finally put together "his team, with HIS players".

@John Munro @BDarc23 @Alan Alford The Knicks won 17 games last year. Why on earth are you judging their moves against the Cavs, GS, and Spurs- the top 3 teams in the league? The comparisons are ridiculous.

@nyminute Do not continue. Give us a chance to reach for a garbage can :

Hardaway for Grant is good trade. Grant is a 4 year player, good basket IQ and a very good point guard. Besides, we need a point guard. Tell us what not to like about that trade?

Shved will most likely be resigned by the Knicks. What are you complaining about?

Anthony Akka Serch

@nyminute well said...gotta get guys who know the system, who know whats up, and will do what tey're BROUGHT IN to do...the number one thing that I THINK OF at least, when i think Phil's championships, is TEAM. Yes, he had Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq, 3 of the very best to ever play it...yes, he had some amazing 2nd tier type players in Pippen, Kukoc, Rodman, etc....but for the most part, it was guys like Luc Longley, John Paxson, Derek Fischer, Robert Horry, who were out there, putting the dagger in the heart of the opposing teams (i was a big Kings supporter back then, i loved Webber, and watching them lose every year to LA killed me, esp since i was such a Laker hater and Kobe hater).... it's nice to get big superstars and create matchup nightmares, but if you can assemble a bunch of smart, high Bball IQ, defensive minded, role players, who know what to do, wont cmplain, and will excel and flourish doing what they're supposed to do in a proven SYSTEM, then you hav ea good chance to win ball games, That's it....basketball may arguably be the most TEAM ORIENTED game in America...without 12 guysplaying TOGETHER and doing what they gotta do, and what they were brought IN to do, you wont see the same SUCCESS that defines a guy like Phil, a guy like Red, a guy like Russell...you'll see some success, some awards...but not the Consistent championship prowess you immeidately think of when yu think of GREAT TEAMS
