Dustin Keller Talks About Early Impressions of Offense

Dustin Keller was in Midtown last night to help promote the NFL pop-up shop, and while he told Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger he fully expects Sanchez to set some serious ground rules about this year.  Keller also noted that in his recent workouts with Sanchez and Holmes in Florida, the receivers were running new route patterns, a sign of the early implementation of Sparano’s system.

… most importantly, they put in early throwing work with Sanchez. Keller said Sanchez directed his receivers on “newer routes, not stuff that we typically run” — the fruits of offseason meetings with former Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington to learn new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano’s system.

“We’re not going to be starting from the beginning when we first get into these offseason workouts,” Keller said. “We know where we want to be, it’s not just going to be everybody running around with their heads cut off. We’re going to have Mark leading the way.”

I can’t believe I never read this, or forgot about it, but our boy Jason did a MASSIVE recap of the efficacy of the Schottenheimer offense a few years ago, and it’s well worth the read, though very long.  In it, Jason proves out what we all thought … that the offense was too complex, required too much on it’s QB to be successful and tried for situational trickery (third and short pass) when not needed or even required.

We all know that Sparano’s offense is going to be more upfront.  So … the routes should reflect that.  It will value getting away from the formation, or at least their cover-man.  It should value using the perimeter instead of throwing a timing route right into a tangle of defenders.  I took a look at some Henne highlights I found on YouTube, and most every throw shown is on the edges.  Will it make some receivers act as decoy on plays more than second option?  For sure, but I think that will be the trick of it with Santonio Holmes.  As long as they’re winning, he’ll stay quiet.

This offense is going to rely on getting receivers in isolation on defenders, and then ask the offensive skill players to beat their defender to make yards … simple “his’ns” to beat “your’ns” stuff.  With players like Holmes, Keller and Kerley, I think this could be a very effective passing offense, but I’d still like them to add one more piece to the receiver puzzle if possible.

Spurs president R.C. Buford, considered the preeminent executive in the NBA, says Phil Jackson doesn’t need his advice as he plows through a new job.

Buford recently was named 2014 Executive of the Year, and his Spurs are three wins a way from their sixth Finals berth since 1999.

“Phil knows how to build teams,’’ Buford told The Post at AT&T Center Monday night. “He’ll be terrific. We’re are all chasing what he built and developed. I don’t think he needs anyone’s help.’’

As a coach with the Bulls and Lakers, Jackson won 11 titles. Buford’s Spurs have captured four championships and were three seconds away from a fifth last June in Miami. The Spurs have posted 15 straight 50-win seasons.

While Warriors consultant Jerry West says Jackson has his work cut out for him in adjusting from coach to executive, Buford disagrees.

“Team building is team building,’’ Buford said. “He’s obviously had a big influence in several different circumstances that have been successful. There’s all kinds of limitations in building a team and he’s faced with some with their current situation, but I don’t know if there’s been a finer team builder. I don’t know how you can predict how successful he would be, but I wouldn’t bet against his credentials.’’

Reggie Miller:  "Phil!  Call Mark Jackson!

“Shouldn’t he [Mark Jackson] get an interview just going off of his resume?” Miller said Tuesday afternoon on a conference call to promote TNT’s coverage of the Western Conference finals. “... He certainly should get an interview. I’m not saying he should get the job. If Phil Jackson wants to go with a guy that he’s familiar with [and] that understands the triangle, he has every right to do that. But certainly Mark Jackson should get at least an interview.”

It’s unclear at this point if the Zen Master will reach out to Mark Jackson.

“[He’s] a guy that’s been born and bred in New York and knows the media landscape of New Yorkers, who knows that city, who was rookie of the year in 1987-88,” said Miller, who played with Jackson in Indiana for parts of six seasons. “Obviously he knows the climate of the New York Knicks. I think that should warrant at least an interview.”

Jackson is currently working as an NBA game analyst for ESPN but his duties with the network aren't expected to preclude him from taking a new head-coaching position.

So the knicks should have thrown big big money at Kerr who never coached a game? Again, as a Phil jax package, sign me up.

The initial offer was good for a first time coach n it was the beginning of a negotiation.

I like the new way of knicks, besides paying Phil jax a ton, trying to not overpay for unqualified people.

Blessing in disguise that Kerr is not our coach. He did not truly want us. Good luck in golden state in western conf......I only wanted Kerr if it was a package deal with Phil jax.

Hopefully fisher wants us.

Ian Begley @IanBegley

Warriors GM says Steve Kerr initially rebuffed GS's interview request. Wonder if #Knicks could have locked him in w/a big initial offer?

Ian Begley @IanBegley

On choosing GS over NYK, Steve Kerr says Phil Jackson told him he had to feel the decision "in his heart." He said he felt that with GS

Whatever coach Phil ends up choosing is going to be a coach who truly wants to coach the New York Knicks. He's not going to try to woo them with money. He doesn't want a coach that decides to come because of money. He wants desire and passion. He wants to know that the future coach wants NY.

Not sure it has been mentioned, but STAT applied for Israeli citizenship after purchasing the Hapoel Jerusalem team along some partners. That was last year.

Jesse- "Believe it or not josh smith is perfect for the 4 on our team. He could be our Lamar odom in the triangle. I'm thinking Felton and bargs for him!"

I was one of if not the first person to bring up J Smith and how i think he would fit this team well. He is a good defender and good scorer IF they keep him from shooting 3s and long range two. I think his game is closer to the basket. He is a good rebounder and shot block. His big flaw is he love to jack 3s and poor free throw shooter. I think if we are getting J Smith we would have to get a good point guard. That way we fix both Knick problems ( poor PG play and a 2 way big). For that reason I would trade TC and AB with Felton for BJen and TSmith

He must of found out that he won't be getting a big contract NO more; just 1 yr veteran's pay.

OLDKNICK ( we gotta get this ring soon - cause the old fella dont have much time left )
Biggie TKB ( my dog )
Sandro Guedes ( he would have to pay for his own airfare )

@melo7  I understand the Knicks may not have much news as of this moment.  There are the NBA playoffs going on atm. Why not make threads about the games and offer content for us to at least discuss about?  It doesnt make any sense.  Keep the site fresh and more worthwhile for posters.

Tony Fonseca

That's what I've been saying all along. Phil knows how to build winning culture period. That's why I am patiently waiting for that moment that NYK will become relevant. Like he said, championship teams are not built by luck, it is by design. So u guys give him time to make it happen as it is a process and not an overnight phenomenon. ..

@SheSaidSpikeWho  Sounds like Phil should choose Mark Jackson then. I don't think he's afraid of the fans or the media.
