Officials to crack down on defensive holding?

The biggest points of emphasis in the NFL’s annual officiating clinic were illegal contact and defensive holding, according to former NFL Vice President of Officiating and current Fox Sports analyst Mike Pereira.

“Last time the NFL had this as a major emphasis was 2004,” Pereira further explained, “and the number of illegal contact fouls went from 79 to 191.”

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Many of the league’s very best defenses employ aggressive coverage between defensive backs and receivers. Over the years Rex Ryan and the Jets have managed to play aggressive but on the legal side of holding. Now with a younger group who are given the benefit of the doubt less in a year where there is a rules emphasis being made on holding? Either the defensive backs are going to have to play mistake free football or the defensive line is going to have to get to the QB that much sooner.

Conversely, this also might help the Jets passing attack if other teams can’t mug Marty Mornhinweg’s receivers.

Sounds good for Saunders, and Ford.

I wonder if they'll ever call holding on TEs. I hope not now that we have an unholdable one.

always love the 'july emphasis" crap......means that league will nitpick in "emphasis" area while ignoring other rules - like offensive holding on passing plays

this is my 2nd year coaching 567 year olds in full contact flag football; if it is anything like 2013 my kids will be held to higher standards than pass blocking NFL o-lineman.  Very sad as the NFL thinks by that keeping QBs upright improves safety when all it does is create more violent downfield collisions as QBs have 5 seconds to throw because the Mankins of the world can hold and they know it.  League should at least say "if a WR ducks and gets hit I head it is not a penalty as the player walked into it....stay upright or stay home!

The Pats get under my skin!  They are arrogant and know all the dirty PR tricks and always come out smelling like roses. I cant wait for our savage Dline to destroy Brady girl!!!!!! The Farm is pissed!!!!!

you should still be able to bump a receiver for the first 5 yards, and if the CB arrives with the ball and is looking back to knock the ball away even if he makes contact with the receiver.

Good morning my little gang green farmers!  The Farm sees a beautiful day on the horizon. The Jets Farm, where the grass is green and the fans can dream. The Jets Farm, a place where there is always hope and a unrelenting quest for the green rainbow. I think the NFL didn't like the way Mannings' WR's were manhandled in the SB!

Why does there need to be a crackdown. How about enforcing the rules.

Can you say trying to get Peyton another ring.  After the Broncos were beaten up in the Super Bowl I guess the NFL wants loosen the reins so they have a chance if they get back to the Super Bowl.

doesn't Revis hold more than he used to? if he has to play a clean game that might help against him

Cro is not going to like this.

@UncleJoesJetFarm what a hack!! Cant wait to see a picture of brady's face when sheldon, mo and Q are tearing him to pieces. I predict the pats  finish last in the division before they win another Super Bowl. They're the most overrated team in the league. . But they should replace last years roster pic of coples lol that was the doofiest pic ever haha

@a57se Bingo..too bad they won't let these guys play ball. I'd rather see DB's and WR's battle like revis and B marshal did. That was amazing to watch them beat the hell out of each other up and down the field. Thinking they will let elite corners like sherman and revis get away with it and just crack down on the rest of the guys. I loved Revis but it did seem like he got the Jordan treatment from refs. Hopefully its across the board. If it is i think it hurts the pats more than it hurts us.

@harvlis

Doesn't cracking down basically mean enforcing the rules that are already in place but aren't being enforced??

@marcus81

Nope. He's a Patriot now. No way they crack down on him.

The young DBs were going to have trouble with the early schedule of top QBs to begin with. This could make it very ugly early. They'll get better as the year goes on but I see a slow first 8 games. 4-4 would be a relief.

@jaym  any declining DB is not going to like this

@a57se @harvlis Yes but, if they would have called the rule consistently and as intended, they would not have to go overboard with the rule, now.

@juunit @marcus81 I was all ready to say, nope. He's a Patriot now and therefore doesn't have to follow the rules.

@psi1 take a hard look at the schedule and you may see better numbers, if Geno has no regression.

Chalk the Broncos game down as a win and go on from there.

@__fense @juunit @marcus81  on the road he might get some calls against him but probably NOT a t home, best to run him over with Johnson and Ivory

@UncleJoesJetFarm

I really think we need to change our mentality.  We need to think 8-0 would be beautiful.  4-4 is a loser mentality.

If we want to win we really have to think bigger.  I seriously doubt the Broncos, Seahawks, and Pats are saying man I hope we go 4-4.  To be great you have to have great expectations and higher standards for yourself.

@harold  THANK YOU!!!!  I will be at the week 5 game in the Murph and I expect us to be going for 5-0

@harold

Winning has absolutely nothing to do with how fans think about their team.

Wishful thinking and a 500 team will still get you a 500 result.

UncleJoesJetFarm

@harold The first part of the schedule is brutal. I dont think too many would be unhappy with 4-4. After that we can win 6 out of 8 for 10 wins, not too shabby. Lets be realistic.
