2011 Analysis: The only times one tends to remember Mulligan’s involvement were when he did bad things. In some ways, just like a kicker, that’s the lot of a backup blocking Tight End. Penalties were a problem at times during the season for Mulligan, but he did play well in stretches. Mulligan had a few nice catches like the one from Jeremy Kerley and the touchdown from Sanchez late in the season, but on the whole the Jets are going to have to make a call on their project Tight End this spring on whether he’ll be back or if he is whether or not he’ll be competing for a job against a mid-round drafted rookie.
2012 Outlook: I think a lot of Mulligan’s future with the team will depend on what input the team gets from new Offensive Coordinator Tony Sparano. If Sparano thinks he can work with him to make a better player, then so be it. The Jets won’t spend a lot in terms of RFA tendering to keep him around … but he might be back in 2012.
Random Thought: For all the grief that he got during the season, on the whole I think that his issues are correctable. The Jets might decide to look for someone more athletically gifted though come April.
