Stephen Hill has had a tough time staying on the field of late with the swelling of his knee after his surgery last winter, but according to Jets receivers coach Sanjay Lal, Hill is learning quickly and Santonio Holmes has been a big part of helping translate the technique to real world examples, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Lal said Hill was making strides this offseason before his knee swelled up. Lal said his main point of emphasis for Hill has been route running.
“It’s really feeling and understanding what you’re trying to accomplish within a specific route,” Lal said. “What am I trying to do to the defender? It’s not just get from point A to point B. It’s what happens along the way.”

It’s a great point into how Lal is working to instruct Hill. Running the route is all well and good, but there’s a number of other factors that come into play: where’s the safety? are other routes being run in the same area? is the route one that the quarterback likes throwing? and so on.
For Hill, he needs to understand how all those other factors come into play and how he can set up his defender as well as other defenders to yield the best result on the play for the whole team.
We can’t say it enough, Hill’s progression in his second year is going to be a big part of how the passing game fares this season.
