Santonio Holmes has been extremely measured in his public comments, and as expected, has been cautiously optimistic about his explosion against the Bills last week and what it might mean for the rest of the season according to Seth Walder of the Daily News.
“I still have a long way to go,” Holmes said.
Holmes has continued to develop a rapport with rookie quarterback Geno Smith, and he has enjoyed new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg’s receptiveness to the players on offense. Holmes acknowledged the Jets’ willingness to stretch the field with downfield passing, but noted that they need to keep focusing on the little things such as the Titans’ tendencies to strip the ball.
Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comHolmes has been coy about his recovery, but if he continues to feel more confident on the field and build that chemistry with his new quarterback, good things could be in store.
Geno said in his presser yesterday when asked about his ability to throw the deep ball that that was one of the reasons the Jets drafted him. As a comparison, go back and read some of the draft profiles that are out there for Mark Sanchez and you will be shaking your held in disbelief … what happened to that guy? One of things that comes up repeatedly in those assessments are Sanchez’s arm strength and accuracy. As we saw in 2011 and 2012, Sanchez became more tentative and his accuracy and arm strength was badly lacking.
Once upon a time, Mark Sanchez was able to throw a semi-decent deep ball, but as last year showed on a number of occasions, that aspect of his game seems removed from Sanchez’s game for whatever reason. Sanchez seems to be putting off surgery again this year, which makes me recall when be opted for rehab a few offseasons ago instead of surgery … I think that had a bigger impact on his game than anyone talks about.
Why talk so much about Sanchez? Because he’s basically been the only quarterback throwing Tone the ball in that time. Tone is effectively in a contract year and now, after the Buffalo game, he’s shown his ability to be a difference maker … so if Geno Smith can be a more accurate and strong-armed quarterback, then we could see some very different statistics from Santonio by the end of this season.
