When the Jets went through cutdowns, one of the veterans who came close to making the team was veteran receiver Ben Obomanu. According to the reporters in Florham Park watching practice this morning, Ben-O is back with the team, likely confirming Jeremy Kerley’s inactivity due to the concussion he received in the game against the Buccaneers.
Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comDoing their best to be salary cap vigilant, the Jets cut a number of veterans we expected could return after Week 1 due to CBA rules that ensure veterans on the roster for the first game receive a fully guaranteed annual salary.
With no one else picking up Obomanu, the Jets now return a veteran player whose knowledge of the system is still fresh. While Obomanu is better known as a special teamer, his knowledge of the offense will be more helpful than a young undrafted player they might pluck off the street.
As far as Kerley not being available, it’s a shame and we’ll look forward to his quick return, but know that it is not something that should be rushed back from — as former Jet safety Eric Smith learned a few years ago.
