Ryan Yet to (Publicly) Make Decision on Starter Next Week

Now that Rex Ryan benched the guy who he believed “gives the Jets the best chance to win” where does the head coach go from here?  All season Rex Ryan has been looking for a quarterback who is smart enough to stay out of the way and he got that from his third stringer, albeit against another struggling team.

Either way, Sanchez didn’t see it coming and Rex hasn’t made his mind up, according to the NY Daily News.

“I didn’t expect it, but it doesn’t matter,” Sanchez said. “It’s the coach’s call.”

Ryan, whose team must win its final four games to have any chance at the postseason, was noncommittal about his starting quarterback for next week in Jacksonville.

“I’ll let you guys know who’s going to be the quarterback when I’m ready to,” Ryan said. “But right now we’ll look at our situation and evaluate it as the week goes on.”

The fact that Mark Sanchez admits that he didn’t expect to get benched tells me all I need to know about the planet on which he lives.

On Planet Sanchez, everyone makes millions of dollars, everyone gets to sleep with models and actresses and everyone can do their job in a criminally negligent fashion without any fear of reprisal.  Congratulations Mark Sanchez, you are now officially the world’s grandest troll.

We’ll see what Ryan does this week, but I’m not sure which way he’ll lean.  Some reporters seem to think McElroy will keep the job, but we’ll just have to wait and see.  With the Steelers winning their game the Jets chances dropped precipitously of making a postseason run.  The Jets have given Mark Sanchez every chance this season and he’s wasted every one that’s been offered.  Yes, Ryan made the call to bench Sanchez on a Sunday in the midst of one of his quarterback’s worst (that’s saying a lot) games of his career, but I can’t be sure whether or not that’s a decision he’ll stick by in coming weeks.  I guess it depends on whether or not Rex Ryan has changed his core “beliefs” about his quarterback.
