Who’s the Commanding Officer Here? // Ain’t You?

Brian Bassett , TheJetsBlog.com

Back to work seems to be the ordre du jour today in Florham Park  … but it’s probably getting a little ♫ awk-ward!!! ♫

Everyone seems to be in a waiting mode.  We have to guess that until the GM issue gets resolved nothing else is going to change.  Here’s a list of a few thoughts today.

1. Today’s Interviews — The Jets have been busy and for the first time in this process are interviewing two candidates on the same day in Scott Cohen and Marc Ross.  No word yet on how serious the Jets are about either.

2. Rex’s Future — All indications point to the idea that Rex is staying put, contingent on the Jets hiring Gamble.  Should we know anything else relevant we’ll let you know,

3. When Will Sparano Be Fired? — Rex wants Sparano gone. It was reported more than a week ago that he would be gone.  But … he’s not gone.  He had more ties to Tannenbaum than we previously understood and Sparano didn’t do anything impressive in 2012 with the offense.  While Sparano said he wouldn’t make excuses he did by lamenting the health of his players.  For a guy who is about execution and results, neither of his were good.

4. What About Pettine? — That’s a real humdinger.  As it was reported, right as far as we know Pettine is a free agent.  His name has not made many any waves in head coaching circles, but coaches will start to assembling their staffs and he’ll start getting more calls in the coming weeks.  Especially once coaches start to get siphoned away from the dwindling playoff teams.  With that in mind, FootballScoop (a longstanding site that reports coaching news) just noted that the Bills have been in touch with the Jets about hiring Pettine as their new defensive coordinator … so this could start sooner than expected …

In other Giants related news ex-Giants LB Pepper Johnson, recently interviewed for the Giants DC position, was hired by Todd Bowles and co over w the Jets to be their new DL Coach. To me this was an Excellent hire by Bowles/Jets and he should excel w the Sheldon Richardsons and Wilkersons of the world... I truely thought it would have behooved our GMEN to bring Pepper on board not as DC but as the DL coach to help fix this broken DL which is dreadful and in need of serious help . Pepper served as the Bills DL coach last season under Jim Schwartz and helped lead the Bills already good DL into a juggernaut and among the leagues best, myb even best Defense in football. Knew it's be a long shot but with all the changes in Buf I was hoping Giabts would hire Schwartz n Pepper to do same things here they did in Buf... Coulda persuaded Pepper by telling him once Schwartz got his next oppo as a HC Pep woukd have become the DC at that point

Lol why would he be Fewell is a good man and a good football mind and despite the SB victory under his tenure the man just isn't an effective DC in the NFL... Perry was just way to passive and in today's nfl you need to be aggressive and take chances when the time calls for it and Fewell proved on too many occasions not to have the gumption to be the aggressor...

It speaks volumes that he hasn't been interviewed for DC positions.

Lots of luck to him, he's  going to need it.

49ers hired TEs coach Eric Mangini as defensive coordinator.

The ex-head coach of the Jets and Browns, Mangini is pulling a Hue Jackson, going from position coach on one side of the ball to coordinator on the other. An overwrought Bill Belichick disciple, Mangini has a 33-47 career record as head coach, but his defensive bonafides have never been questioned. He should be a good defensive boss for Jim Tomsula, and still has a great base of talent to work with even though GM Trent Baalke has done a poor job of restocking the cupboard in recent years. The man formerly known as "Mangenius" is undoubtedly angling for one last shot at being a head coach. This is a nice launching pad.

My guess is that Pepper bombed his interview with the Giants in a major league way... Hopefully it was a learning experience for him, and he does a great job with the Jets

@Anthony Gaetano DeCesare  They're also hiring Tony Sparano to replace Magini as new TE coach. So 49ers are just loading up their coaching staff with former NFL Head Coaches. And if they get Fewell you can add him to that list as well. It's looking like the only one on the staff without head coaching experience will be the Head Coach LOL
