Wilkerson Suffered Concussion Against Chargers

Unknown before now, Rex Ryan told the media today that Mo received a concussion last Sunday.

Rex Ryan announced Wednesday that Muhammad Wilkerson suffered a concussion against the Chargers on Sunday. Wilkerson will not practice Wednesday.

The defensive lineman played the entirety of the team’s game on Sunday, and Ryan said he did not believe Wilkerson was evaluated for a concussion during the game.

“It was kind of news to me that he has a concussion,” said Ryan. “Hopefully he’ll be able to play… I know I wasn’t aware of it until, actually, yesterday.”

Never a good thing, and we hope that Wilkerson will be alright, but with nothing to play for there’s no need for Rex Ryan to rush him back to the field.  I get that Ryan wants his guy to be able to play, and while the sentiment is nice, it’s not necessary.  Wilkerson has proven this year that he’s a formidable talent and could be a force on the Jets defensive line for many years to come.  So for the sake of his long-term health any reps that Wilkerson would get in a game against a similarly underachieving Bills team would basically be pointless.

We hope Wilkerson can recover the span of whatever time he needs and doesn’t speed back to the field prematurely.
