Report: Raiders to start rookie QB Carr vs. Jets

Raiders players were told Monday that rookie Derek Carr will get the start over veteran Matt Schaub when Oakland opens the season against the Jets at MetLife Stadium next Sunday, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports (Fox Sports, Sept. 1).

Carr, 23, a second-round pick out of Fresno State, was 30-for-45 for 326 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception in the preseason.

Schaub, 33, is entering his 11th NFL season and first with Oakland. He spent the first three seasons with Atlanta and last seven with Houston. He was a frequent target of fans’ unhappiness in his final year with the Texans.

We cut Simms and all of a sudden he was a quality backup..??

We cut Lankster and all of a sudden he's a quality 3rd,4tg CB??

lol, can't make this stuff up... as for ST, uhmmm Edds, Hakim, Reilly etc we have studs

I can't wait to see this one explained away. I guess we're converting Josh Bush to CB, too.

Cut Lankster?

I guess we had too many CBs.

i wonder if there is some sort of trade in the works right now for a veteran cb

Completely OT. Every time I see Melissa Stark, I don't give a sh!7 about anything else. That's all.

It's more fun trashing Idzik

@williamg1

Crazy now Lankster is a bum, after Cincy he was a potential starter.  Now he is yesterday's trash.

I sense Rex just never was a Lankster fan.  While DT seemed to like him.

williamg1
williamg1

@Marvel_

Actually, the argument around here (for the longest) has been that Lankster can step in and start.

Now he's cut.

harold

@Marvel_

Lankster has been a player who has played well for the Jets.

I am more concerned only because the secondary does not look better to me than on Saturday.

My guess is Lankster was maybe stirring things up or something.  From a pure football standpoint I don't see it.

Lastly, I am not panicked by Lankster being cut just surprised because I don't see the benefit.

harold

@williamg1

I know Lankster was not at his best on Thursday but this secondary does not look better to me right now.

@rstysanchz think its more likely we sign a vet in week 2 than a trade

@Brendan

I did not see this one coming.

Cut Lankster and keep Kyle Wilson?

I would have much rather gone into battle with Allen Walls and Lankster as my nickel CB's, than Walls, Allen and Wilson.

marcus81
marcus81

@Brendan if Idzik would have just signed one of the good CB at the beginning of FA all these past moves would not be taking place, I know Jets will have to pay some players on the roster, but the CB's that where available were not that expensive for what some of them get paid.

j3tsfan29

Lankster is a starting caliber cb they said... I bet steiny is sad.

Ok, now I'm going to have to join the WTF camp. Lankster is better than the two CB scrubs we picked up.

@williamg1 But as usual, Jets fans know better than Rex and the team, right?

williamg1
williamg1

@harold @williamg1

Harold, I have no idea whats going on. This is so crazy that it makes me think there's something else going on.

Either that, or we're going to go with a 10-1 defense (10 up front rushing the passer, with Pryor playing a single high coverage against all the WRs).

Brendan
Brendan

@Rudibager Lankster went from starting with the first team to playing all of the last game and getting torched. Maybe the team just likes their new CBs better.

Brendan
Brendan

@juunit He did have a terrible game against Philly, maybe they think the new penalty rules will really hurt him? Hakim basically took his gunner job, so I guess he was expendable.

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1 I'm just saying, to hear him touted over and over as the answer (when others doubted he could step in and start) only to see him cut. And now to hear "oh he was only a 5th CB" is amusing.

rstysanchz
rstysanchz

@williamg1 the ol 10-1 havent seen that one in awhile sounds crazy but it might just work!!

Brendan
Brendan

@Rudibager Seeing a bottom-tier player getting cut isn't the same thing as a trade for a big player. And Joseph makes a lot of money, I keep seeing people throw that name out there and it's just something I can't see Idzik doing.

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

I know for sure Lankster held his own under Rex. Sorry, I think this move is idiotic, frankly.

koala
koala

@Brendan @Disgruntled Jets Fan I have no idea how they rank as CBs. I think we all like Lankster. But maybe its a good sign for our ST depth that we can let someone like Lankster go if we don't think he can contribute much elsewhere on defense

diverge

@Brendan @Rudibager I saw Rex chatting it up with Wilson on the sidelines of the last preseson game. I wonder if he was suggesting that Wilson turn his head around and look for the ball sometimes?

Then wouldn't they have made this move at cutdowns... Why keep him and cut Edds the other day? There mist be more to this.

juunit

@Brendan @juunit

It wasn't a good game. But it's not like we have other CBs ready to step up in his place.

MPTG_Frank
MPTG_Frank

@Brendan @Rudibager His contract is onerous. And not just for this year either.

Brendan
Brendan

@Disgruntled Jets Fan He held George on the roster an extra day and then will sneak him onto the PS when he probably wouldn't have made it there otherwise. That's actually kind of savvy when you think about it.

I really think people are making this into a bigger deal than it is. The team has 6 CB's on the roster after this cut, which is plenty and we don't know if these guys are upgrades or downgrades. I'll wait and see on this, Lankster looked really bad in the last preseason game.

Brendan
Brendan

@juunit Judging by the last preseason game, Lankster isn't ready to step up, either.

Brendan
Brendan

@Rudibager You wouldn't? He was a STs player and one of the bottom 2/3 CB's on the team.

harold
harold

@Brendan @Disgruntled Jets Fan

Brendan please stop referring to the last preseason game as if that would be the main reason for this.

If that were the case we would never sign McFadden.

This has the scent of something behind the scenes.

BDarc23
BDarc23

@Brendan

Could this be a sign that Milliner is better?

juunit
juunit

@Brendan @juunit

I dunno, his head was at least in the game. He knocked a ball away at least once and he held guys instead of getting beat for a TD. It could've been worse.

rstysanchz
rstysanchz

@Brendan @Rudibager but lankster knew our system alot better than lewis and adams....you think we can get them 2 ready to go in a weeks time?

Rudibager
Rudibager

@BrendanAt this stage of the season, with the injuries and recent cuts, nope.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold Harold, please stop acting like the last preseason game, Ellis' biggest audition for the season which he tanked terribly, doesn't matter at all.

And McFadden had a considerably better performance in the final preseason game, so I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Rudibager
Rudibager

@juunit @Brendan Maybe this means D-Mill is ready to play?  Wow, I hope so.  Kinda makes a lot more sense why they moved AA now.

Brendan
Brendan

@rstysanchz This is a roster spot that isn't going to get much playing time, anyway. With all the chatter about 3-safety looks, the 4th/5th CB spot is much less important.

harold
harold

@Brendan @harold

Was Lankster ever discussed as being on the bubble?

He gave up some catches but nothing deep.  He committed a couple smart penalties when beaten.

McFadden's entire preseason was terrible and even in the last preseason game he still committed multiple penalties.

Now you have turned on Lankster for a subpar 4th preseason game?

I never looked at you as an a company man but this is bordering on that.

juunit
juunit

@Rudibager @juunit @Brendan

I still wouldn't think cutting a semi-capable CB makes sense. Even with Milliner we still only have one CB truly locked into his starting spot. I guess you could say Wilson in the slot makes two.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold And I haven't "turned" on anyone. I'm a Jets fan, I'm not going to cry and whine because the team cut the 5th CB on the roster.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold "Was Lankster ever discussed as being on the bubble? "

Why is this relevant? The team doesn't march to the beat of the MSM and fans talking points.

t__k
t__k

@juunit @Rudibager @Brendan So its Walls and Allen starting with Wilson in the slot.  Who is the 4th CB?  I don't see how this makes sense.

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @harold

But you've argued that Lankster could step in and start. I guess that's no longer your feelings.

harold
harold

@Brendan @harold

Okay, Brendan you are now acting as though anyone thought Lankster would be cut.

He was a 5th CB when teams usually keep 6.  Plus he was an excellent ST player.

To get cut 48 hours after cutdowns was a surprise to most.

I guess you were omnipotent and saw this coming.

My fault for being surprised.

juunit
juunit

@t__k @juunit @Rudibager @Brendan

McFadden or Adams are the only other guys on the roster. Unless we're gonna use Landry or Pryor to cover specific guys.

I think you'd see Wilson outside before Allen.

Brendan
Brendan

@t__k The team likely hasn't sorted that out themselves yet.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 He looked good against Cincy, he looked the complete opposite against Philly's backups.

I think the team can start below-average players at CB2 because of the DL. That hasn't changed, just which potentially-below-average CB is going to start there.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold Being surprised and whining about it are two entirely different things. In case you missed it, my initial comment was "WHOA" which would indicate I didn't see this coming, either.

Rudibager
Rudibager

@Brendan @t__k It might be that the Jets are about to make a trade for a major CB upgrade?  I don't know.  Can't make sense of it right now.

harold
harold

@Brendan @t__k

A bad 4th preseason game cannot be the reason for this.

This is something that has the look of something of an inside the building move.

harold
harold

@Brendan @harold

But I just feel to cut Lankster when we only added marginal talent on the eve of the season, makes think that there is more here than meets the eye.

As I stated up above I am not panicked by the move just don't see how it makes us better.

Brendan
Brendan

@Rudibager I doubt it.

Dee/Walls/Wilson/Adams/Allen/McFadden is what this team is going to war with, I'm assuming.

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

I always had the sense they did not respect or reward Lankster's production.

I bet he does well elsewhere.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold Lankster is a marginal talent. Agree or disagree?

harold

@Brendan @Rudibager

This secondary looks worst to me than the one we had.

I am hoping as some suggest we have a trade or another roster move in the works.

t__k
t__k

@Brendan @Rudibager  That secondary is asking to get torched.  Wow, that is just not an impressive secondary.  They're going to need some huge sack numbers to get through Week 2-7.

harold
harold

@Disgruntled Jets Fan

Seems Rex was always partial to Walls in interviews I saw.

I got the sense from interviews teammates and DT liked Lankster more.

harold
harold

@Brendan @harold

An internal beef or something.

Doesn't make sense from a football standpoint.  Lankster is an excellent special teams player and a solid 3rd or 4th CB.

A below average 4th preseason game when you have this much history doesn't seem like enough to get you cut.

harold
harold

@Brendan @harold

I feel Lankster is a marginal physical talent but his heart makes him average on game-day.

Which for us is more than I feel many others at his talent level bring.  He competes and has almost never let us down when forced into action, the 4th preseason aside.

Those are my points.

Brendan
Brendan

@t__k That's not a secondary, safeties count towards that. And I'd say that's a solid, but unspectacular, CB depth chart.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold Conspiracy theories? Really?

And speaking of history, Lankster has never earned a spot on Rex's defense, shouldn't that tell you something?

t__k
t__k

@Brendan @t__k I like our safety situation if AA and Pryor are back there.  But CB is weak, Brendan.  Solid would be a generous description.

harold
harold

@Brendan @harold

Again I don't think he was ever a Rex guy.

That can hurt you when you never really become part of  a coach's inner circle you can get pushed off the roster when an opportunity arises.

Listening to DT talk about Walls and Lankster and then listening to Rex talk about the same two guys it is very different.

DT seems to really like Lankster, while Rex loves Walls potential.

Again this decision may not make or break us.  But I don't see how it makes us better.

Brendan
Brendan

@t__k I disagree. Dee is a legit talent and Walls could be better than average. To be honest, Wilson is the CB I'm more concerned about.

bradysucks
bradysucks

You are at your best Brendan when you defend Sanchez, Vlad, Stephen Hill, and now the Jets CB situation

You are the consummate defender of the underdog

You do come around as you did with Sanchez but I truly love your ability to ignore obvious evidence even as it stares you in the face. So predictable

t__k
t__k

@Brendan @t__k Dee is hurt and Walls could be just about anything.  Wilson is always a wild card.  I would not label that secondary solid.

Brendan
Brendan

@t__k Dee is going to miss one game, tops. People can stop acting like he contracted Ebola now.
