Antonio Cromartie to sign with Arizona

Antonio Cromartie will sign with a one-year deal the Arizona Cardinals, according to SNY’s Jeane Coakley. Cromartie wanted to stay with the Jets, Coakley said.

The Jets released Cromartie on March 9, avoiding a $5 million bonus and saving $9.5 million against the cap (TJB, March 9).

From 2010-2013 with the Jets, Cromartie had 51 passes defended, 140 tackles and 13 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. He also had two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Cromartie was traded to the Jets in 2010 for a 2011 draft pick. He signed a four-year, $32 million contract with the Jets in 2011. He went to the Pro Bowl in 2007, while playing with the Chargers, 2012 and 2013, representing the Jets.

Not unexpected news for the Jets, but this feels like a tough blow for Jets fans after a disappointing free agency. While the Jets obviously have the money to retain Cromartie if they like John Idzik has been disciplined, if not ascetic, in his spending.

Cutting Cromartie, with some semi-pursuits of many of the free agent class’s best corners doesn’t give a settling feeling. Everyone knows Rex Ryan loves cornerbacks and Dee Milliner, Kyle Wilson, Ellis Lankster and Darrin Walls is a promising, but mixed bag from spots one to four.  There might still be ways to cornerbacks to the team.  There is the draft, players will be cut between now and then or the Jets might look to trade for a player.  Today’s roster is not the opening day roster.  Even so, the opportunities for finding veteran contributors to come in as starters is much more limited than it was a week ago.

Cro seemed destined to part ways with the Jets no matter what came next and we wish him the best. The Cardinals play in the NFL’s toughest division in 2013, and were one of the league’s best teams to not make the playoffs. Paired with Patrick Peterson, Cromartie could have a chance to extend his career in the desert under Bruce Arians.

Bad move by idzik not signing Cro.  I get that they want to build for the future and not overspend, but Cro signed a one year deal in Arizona.  The Jets could have probably just matched the offer to keep him and that wouldn't jeopardize the future in any way. They have the cap space, it's for one year...  Come on.

The Jets got some good production out of Cro. Especially when Revis went down. For that we thank you. Now is the time to part ways.

This is not a loss. Per PFF, Cromartie wasn't even a top 100 CB in 2013. He was a liability for a good chunk of last year.

People overreacting about losing one of the worst rated corner in football ...

with the cap room we have and what we have done so far i would call this off season a colossal failure.

not signing a corner to replace Cro is beyond stupid.

Perhaps someone accepted a trade for Sanchez? we have like 3 more days to unload him on someone else.

Anyone know's anything about this conference call? What they are talking about?

Wish Cro nothing but the best. He's grown over the past few years, and I hope people recognize that.

Dang, what if this conference is about Rex quiting because Idzik messed up his secondary even more?

Pablo Bruno

I don't get the questioning, lol, @Rex: "Are you upset over not getting Revis?" No sh@#, do they expect him to say, yea I'm f$#@ing mad, I'm going to quit, forget Idzdik. I'm getting myself a snack.

You got to wish him the best, unlike Revis, he was a good sport about negotiating his contract and taking a pay cut to stay with the Jets, unfortunately he hasn't been playing the way he was in previous years, maybe he'll recover his old form, and I hope so for his own success, but from a Jets team's perspective we did what was best for the future.  We couldn't take a chance, hopefully we can find someone to fill that void, or maybe one of our own guys can, of all, I think Darren Walls can possibly step up, allow Milliner be the #1, I'm sure he's ready, and Walls can cover #2.

This is addition by subtraction. Cro was horrible last year. Why is it so hard to believe that the team has confidence that one or more of Lankster, Dowling, Walls, Wilson are ready to step up big time? Do you think everyone was praising browner, sherman and thurmond a few years ago at this time? If the team thought Cro would be a good cb next year then he'd be signed right now.

@Dean B  Dean, How much is Cro getting? (if its 5MM then thats a lot, if its 2MM then maybe the Jets made a mistake)

Maybe the Jets are concerned about his hip and think there is a chance it's going to be a recurring  problem.

It's not overreacting when we don't have a legitimate starting corner other than milliner and it's a stretch saying milliner is one. Everybody talks about how bad cro was last season. He was bad but also playing injured. If we had signed one of the many good cb in free agency this would be no loss. A lot of people say get one in the draft. Ok so you wanna go into the season with a second year guy a rookie and some bums I don't

@nagel100  So who should they have signed?  Is that player worth the money?

I wouldn't have signed Revis, Talib, or DRC.  Maybe Alterun verner, but he doesn't fit the Jets defensive scheme.

There are other CBs out there, and Free Agency isn't over.  Maybe the Jets will have to take a below average one for a year.

Is the offseason over? No one told me.

@Pablo Bruno  Just standard talk about their plans for the rest of the offseason and the moves they made so far.  No breaking news and certainly a unified front.  It's over now.

@Pablo Bruno      Like in the cartoons,  there is a speech balloon above Rex's head stating "I'm really pissed at that guy"  even though there are no outward signs of unhappiness.

Nobody can see this speech balloon except the NY media.

@Pablo Bruno

If that is really what this conference is about, I will eat a live porcupine and post the video on Youtube.

They play a totally different defense....seatlle runs cover 3..its a different front as well...Pete carrrol had autonomy to develop those guys...we spit the bit this year....Rex is gone

Ed D

BC weve seen these guys play....Wilson and patrick are nickels....lankster and walls are spot starters depth guy.... Dowling is off the scrap heap....Rex needs guy who can play press man to run his d

McGeorge

@Paul Passadino  Are you certain that his play will improve this year?  maybe the Jets think his injury will recur or that his performance has deteriorated and at best he'll just be average, and thus over paid at whatever the Cards signed him for.

I do agree that the Jets need a corner back.

Paul Passadino

Also how many 1st round picks can we use on cb. It's 2 in the last bunch of years one of which is terrible and one in milliner that the jury is still out on.

@Pete Whalen  If you've been following Idzik you might think it hadn't even started yet

Pablo Bruno

@nagel100  Actually I'm in agreement with you, but what most would argue is that since Idzik did a great job in Seatle, he'll do a great job here, which to me isn't a guaranteed.  One thing you need to consider is the GM's relationship with the Owner, and who the Owner is, if there is disagreements on any terms between  owner and gm, then that can put a damper on results. I don't know how Seatle's owner is, but this Owner over here is greedy.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@bklyndude @Pablo Bruno  you can't, but I can see fumes coming out of his head and nostrils..lol, I bet he uses this to do his best coaching next year, maybe he'll top last year and we make the playoff's, then he'll say, now, can I get some real talent, do I deserve my shut down corners now? lol

levi

@Ed D  But Cro rarely pressed at the line though.

Bent

@Ed D  Lankster's strength is press coverage.  I still don't get why he wasn't starting last year whenever Milliner was benched.  If he'd played and played well then maybe we could feel confident about him as a potential starter.  As it is, Walls played and played...okay, I guess.

Paul Passadino
Paul Passadino

The money would be cheap and a one year deal so if he got hurt it would not handcuff the team as he would be gone at seasons end

Pablo Bruno

@a57se @Pablo Bruno @nagel100  Many people said, and he was responsible for the talent that is on the Seahawks team isn't he? Is it a gaurentee that he'll do it here? Or will the NY media chase him out of town before he is finished?

bklyndude

@a57se @bklyndude @Pablo Bruno     Not everyone,  just some of the people blogging and complaining.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@bklyndude @Pablo Bruno  your'e right, when you have a front seven like the one the Jets have, you can do well with decent corners, nothing special, Dee Milliner and maybe Walls can do a good enough job, but we must get someone faster then Pace to rush the QB to make it easier on our corners.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@Pablo Bruno @bklyndude       Everybody thinks he needs two shutdown corners to coach his defense......they would be nice,  but they aren't necessary for Rex to have a good defense.

@a57se @Bent @Ed D  He did well for a back-up.  Okay/Solid/Decent all mean more or less the same thing to me.  I haven't seen enough to say I'd be comfortable with him as a full time starter, but I don't expect it to come to that.
