Audible: Round Eight

The seventh round is winding down now, with just the last few compensatory selections to be made. These, of course, cannot be traded, so that means the draft is over for yet another year for the Jets.

Don’t throw out those draft guides just yet, because there’s still work to be done. The signing of undrafted free agents has landed the Jets such players as Mike DeVito, Brandon Moore and Damon Harrison in the past, so its importance should not be overlooked. The Jets picked up several players in round eight last year who ended up on the active roster by the end of the season, including Chris Pantale and Rontez Miles.

Anybody not selected can be picked up as an undrafted free agent, so the Jets will be working the phones for the next few days. Some teams feel the Jets and Giants usually have an advantage because of all the potential draft picks physically in the New York area during draft time. However, having already made so many picks the Jets don’t have as much room on their roster for undrafted free agents this year, so this period might be quieter than usual.

So, were there any guys that went undrafted that you would like the Jets to bring aboard? Post your suggestions in the comments, together with any rumors or reports about actual UDFA pickups.

Stay tuned to TJB tonight where we will be updating our UDFA tracker with details of any signings. Also, follow TheJetsBlog’s Jake Steinberg here because he often gets wind of these before anyone else.

Heh, they just said this was the first draft since 1937 where no Texas Longhorns were drafted.  Ouch.

Well, at least they've got Charlie Strong headed to town, he'll get that fixed quick (Pryor-Bridgewater-Smith-Brown).

I do think its interesting that IK Enemkpali played with Karl Dunbar's son at Louisiana Tech. I'm sure Dunbar's very familiar with his abilities/skills.

So is Calvin Pryor going to start from the first game?

If so, who is he replacing, Landry or Allen?

The thought of being coached-up by Rex and Dunbar has to be enticing for any UDFA defensive lineman.

Really so glad it was addressed, and lookin' forward to the new O line competition, cause I'm not taking anything for granted...

still bummin' about Austin Howard...we coulda done 6.5 for that dude...

For the record, the 1937 draft was the second draft EVER.

So, there have been two drafts EVER with no Longhorns.

@jaym

Are you trying out for Steiny's job jaym?

@williamg1  Honestly, Rex, I don't.  All these picks look like your pick.

@williamg1  Unfortunately I don't think that's true.  I believe his son played at Louisiana-Lafayette so whoever reported that was wrong.  However, Dunbar has ties throughout the area so I'm sure he's familiar.

@a57se  Would you be surprised if he replaces Landry? I wouldn't.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se  1.) No, and 2.) Allen, probably, as Landry will keep making the calls at first.  But all three will play a ton regardless.

And if we still sign Reed, who knows?

@kniff

Nah, that was way too much money for Howard....Oakland was desperate.

@tsjc68

They didn't know where Texas was back then.......

@Bent Cimini first reported it, but did follow it up by saying he was mistaken.

@tsjc68 I expect Pryor to start learning those ropes from Landry before eventually taking over for him.

If Reed is signed, same situation, just better for Pryor.

@a57se keep in mind..oakland may move him to guard..paying tackle money for a guard

@a57se Well we saved 2M by signing Breno, but I'm loyal to a fault 57...lets keep a sharp eye on both of em' this year.

@a57se @tsjc68  Was there still racism in Texas back then?  Seeing as how it's over now...

Hey, relax....I was only joking...I realized I missed the fact that you were copying Steiny's tweets......I just read the signings......

@Brendan @Bent  Okay, well at least he covered his tracks.  But still like I say, Dunbar RUNS La.

@a57se @tsjc68  That's true.  Allen rarely really looks lost anymore.

Really, nothing would surprise me at this point.

@tsjc68 @a57se

Allen is obviously into his third year in the system so  he should be pretty close to having it down.......depending on how well Pryor does from the beginning, He and ALlen could be paired fairly early....

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68

That is what I was thinking as there has not been a young safety that the Jets have picked up who wasn't already familiar with Rex' defense who learned the calls and adjustments in a year.....

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Brendan @tsjc68  Yup.

The long-term plan is probably Pryor and Allen, but while Pryor's learning it's safer to play him in Allen's spot and keep Landry out there captaining things.

@fuldsadick @a57se

I think they already made that decision....Sparano knows Howard from his time here.......I find it difficult to believe a 6'7" guy will do well inside....but what do I know?

Brendan
Brendan

@fuldsadick I thought they already stated they are definitely doing that? Either way, this just shows how dumb the Raiders are.

@tsjc68 Amen.

I will dig into my MS Paint photoshop skills later for some lulz.

@kniff @a57se

If we are going to a full blown ZBS, then Breno is a better fit than Howard.......just have to hope the push-ups keep the penalties under control!

Brendan
Brendan

@kniff I don't think you have to worry about that. The Hindsight Brigade will not miss a chance to bring up a misfire like that.
