Audible: Who is at the top of your free agent list?

Less than a month away, March 8 marks the start of free agency when players and agents can begin to contact other clubs. There’s still plenty that needs to happen before the true start of free agecny. Teams will begin to sign their own payers in the coning weeks and the March 3rd franchise tag deadline date needs to come and go. But, who are players that you expect will be available in free agency who top your list? They could be potential cuts or outright free agents? What one or two players do you think the Jets should sign to be difference makers on this team in 2014?

Chris Johnson if available, And BEST WR this year even out of all FA WRs is Sammy Watkins. Need to trade up for him we got the picks! # PLAYMAKER!!

Jarius Byrd Safety may not be our biggest need but considering that there are a lot of receivers in the draft he's the free agent we'd be best signing I think. Eric Decker will probably ask for too much money considering what he is.

Center Guard Greg Van Roten from the Green Bay Packers. Kids a beast and a freak athlete for his size.

Been reading for years, but new to posting. I haven't read anyone with Greg Hardy at the top of their list. He along with Chris Johnson and Maclin could put us over the top.

People are debating adding players so I will give you 3 scenarios.

You can have  Decker, Quarless, Tate, Re-sign Cro, Howard, Folk, Reed, Extend Mo.  40 Million on Cap

You can sign Tate, Shields, Daryl Smith (Cut David Harris), resign Howard, Folk, Reed and  Extend Mo.  32 Million on the cap

You can sign Orakapo, Shields, Tate, Daryl Smith (Cut Harris) resign, Howard, Reed.  Probably 35 million in cap space.  You can do it for more but I like to put more upfront money on the cap if you have the room.

Scenario 1 you get  2 WR's, TE, CB, RT, K, S, Extend Mo

Scenario 2 you get 1 WR, CB, ILB, RT, K, S, Extend Mo

Scenario 3 you get 1 OLB, CB, WR, ILB, RT, S

Which do you guys prefer?

The more I think about it I think they sign Tate. Young, durable, good hands, returner, Idzik connection. ~$7mill/per. Might not be my first choice but it just makes too much sense.

@a57se

So according to this, Jets could get Taylor Lewan, Zack Martin or Cyrus K.

Hmmm...while it is not a "pressing" need, could you imagine having another  stud bookend Tackle opposite Brick?  Maybe even move Brick to the right side later on as he slows down.

(Howard is okay, but I'm just saying...)

@goat7  Chris Johnson is interesting, I'm very curious as to what kind of money he's looking for

Brendan
Brendan

@MarshRandy  At $5ish million, I'd probably pass, even though I realize the fun we could have with Fatso mispronouncing his name every day for years.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  Not trying to be contrarian or anything, but not one of those scenarios excites me. I'd probably go with #1, but I do not like Decker/Quarless/Tate as an offensive haul.

At least you're finally coming around on the team not letting Howard go, though :)

@a57se I don't think...they didn't even announce the location yet, since cortland seemed to be up in the air.

@Bytor Yeah, most Tate gets is 6 million per year, only if the market is high for him.  If not he'll get a deal similar to Amendola.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bytor  I'd take a bunch of other guys over Tate. You're going to pay a premium for his punt returning.

@MarshRandy I mentioned Johnson the other day. He would be dangerous catching out of the backfield. But yeah he may want a lot of money.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong Eh, you could start them both at the OLB spots. That's actually terrifying to envision as a QB.

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@Brendan lol, I think we'll have that chance. He's a great fit for the Giants

harold

I have always said I like Howard.  Just giving some options like always.

I like option 3.

I put Quarless in their for @a57se, plus it seems to fit Idzik's MO.

harold
harold

Okay what is the scenario you would prefer.

Bytor

57, Brendan, I agree with both of you. I just have a suspicion they'll go that route. We try to convince ourselves of Decker, Maclin or Nicks. I just keep coming back to Tate.

levi
levi

@a57se Possible, I dont even really know what their top needs are. Im kinda liking Niklas out of Notre Dame if they dont grab one of the top 2 TE's in the first.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong  Haha, I mean technically they could pass it 40% more, that doesn't mean it's a good idea. I could see them maybe increasing to 65:35, but Eli might actually die from the beating he'd take.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi Yeah, but they already have a 60:40 run:pass ratio, how much more can they possibly pass?

harold

I guess we should run the ball more than ever.

This rookie is a bum.

@Brendan @rstysanchz   WCO means they will be throwing more often I assume. This should be fun to watch the QB who threw more int's than anyone else last year start attempting more passes.

@Brendan @MarshRandy  im hearing with the giants new oc they are gonna be doing more of a west coast offense...more 3 wr sets im thinking the giants are going wr or cornerback in the 1st

Brendan
Brendan

@MarshRandy If he's sitting there at 13 or 14, I'd send the Bucs' 3rd rounder and the Jets' 1st round to move up 4/5 picks and nab him. Without hesitating.

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@Brendan same I'd be thrilled if we got him. Wouldn't mind a slight trade up

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@Brendan is Evans your top-WR? Well besides Watkins who for sure won't be there

Brendan
Brendan

@MarshRandy @Brendan  My hope is the Giants don't pick up a good TE and then go into the draft intent on taking one of the top guys in the 1st round. All part of the "GIVE ME MIKE EVANS, NFL!" fantasy I am cooking up.

MarshRandy

@Brendan @harold  Orakpo would be awesome but very expensive. It would work if we really hit on skill positions in the draft

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  I would not like to spend a top-5 pass rusher salary on Orakpo. Smith is fine, Shields is fine. Tate I really don't like.

You just asked what I'd like most, if we combined your scenarios I'd find something I liked a lot, I'm willing to bet.

harold
harold

You would not like Orakpo with Coples, Rich, Mo and Harrison, Daryl Smith and Shields at the 2nd and 3rd levels.  With Tate, Kerley, Nelson, Hill and two WR's, TE and RG from the draft in our 1st 4 picks?

I would be really excited about that squad.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  I just don't think he's all that good (Quarless, that is).

If I could swap some other WR's and a new TE in there, I'd definitely go option #1.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong Bingo. These are all moves for the future, and Mo is part of the future (duh), but there's nothing that says they have to square everything away immediately. Thankfully, I think Idzik is fully aware he can take his time with Mo, and since Mo has already said a holdout hasn't even entered his mind, I think that's the best course of action.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong That's also assuming they extend Mo this year, they can always wait and do it next year.

Marcus Armstrong
Marcus Armstrong

@a57se @Marcus Armstrong  Verner will be in that 9-10 range (While tremendously skilled, he's still only 5'10"), and Pitta will likely be around 4-6. So yes, you're cutting into in-season spending, but I think you're overestimating Reed (who should be on vetmin, or near it), as well as first-year Mo costs.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  If he's playing for $5 million, I'm much more comfortable signing him.

harold
harold

I think it is a little low.   Just going off the over the cap article numbers from last week.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  Yeah, he's not going to be looking for $5 million, though.

harold
harold

For around 5 million I think he is worth it.  He is top 50 WR IMO and an excellent  punt returner.  I think that is fair market.  I was always against it if it cost more than 6 million.  But in the 5 million range he makes sense.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bytor  I mean, on the surface it makes sense because of the Seattle connection. It's not unfair to draw some conclusions from that, I suppose, but I think there are other guys that are better fits, either financially or schematically. Maclin fits both of those, for instance, but he may now want to come here. Decker may fit one (scheme), but not the other (financials). Nicks would probably fit both, but people are worried he's too much of a headache.

With Tate, you'll be getting an above-average WR and an elite punt returner, but for the price of a just-below-elite WR. Worth it? To me, it's not, I'd rather sign the guy who is a better WR (Nicks) or the guy who is cheaper (Maclin) or something. I'm not big on Tate, I just think they'll be paying for punt return ability that they probably won't be using a ton of.
