Austin Howard to explore free agency

Austin Howard will explore free agency, as the Jets could not come to an agreement with the offensive tackle (Costello, March 11).

A few teams have already expressed interest in Howard (Mehta, March 11).

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

There was a lot of hope that the Jets would get a deal done with Howard before today, but that’s obviously not the case.  The Jets must be hesitant to offer Howard the type of contract he is seeking .. a rather reasonable Phil Loadholt type deal.  While we would like to think that it is still even money for Howard to re-sign with New York, there’s a lot of doubt around his return.

Now that it’s reached this far it is reasonable to think that the money could be better elsewhere, especially in a place like Miami where they badly need linemen to clean up their mess on and off the field.  Howard is a stand-up guy and as much as it kills me to type this, a team like Miami would be lucky to get him.

Stay tuned.

If the Jets lose Howard, who's the next man up?

A deal is never done until it is done (many thought this was a done deal).  We will be a better team this season with or without Howard.  Would be good to have him,  but not a huge loss if he is gone.

We wanted him pretty badly so it has to be a lot.  I would say 6-8 million per year.  But we will know soon enough
