Bent, TheJetsBlog.comGaray had a pretty quiet preseason and struggled to hold his ground against the run in last night’s game. However, it’s still a surprise to see the veteran miss out on an opening day roster spot.
The Jets do have some depth on the line, but that is compromised by Quinton Coples’ anticipated absence over the first few weeks of the season. While Coples is listed as the starting rush linebacker, he has been playing on the inside on passing downs.
Leger Douzable outshone Garay during preseason and now looks to have secured his spot. There may be room for one more interior lineman though, so it will be interesting to see whether the Jets intend to retain one of their less-experienced players or have their eyes on someone from outside the organization.
Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comAnd another veteran falls. Garay was brought in as a minimal cost upside vet to help as a backup tackle and interior pass rush specialist. The Jets projected use of of Coples on the interior plus the play of the youngsters might be more to blame here than anything else. Still, it demonstrates yet again that the new GM favors a different approach to building his roster, granted in a cap austerity season.
