Breaking: Jets Release OLB Bryan Thomas…For Now

Surprising news from the Jets today:
Jets have announced today they have released LB Bryan Thomas and signed CB Donnie Fletcher from practice squad … [and] … have also announced FB John Conner, TE Dustin Keller have been downgraded to “out” today, aren’t traveling to MIA.
Analysis: The story behind this is that with Ellis Lankster dealing with a lower back injury and the team’s apparent loss in confidence in Isaiah Trufant to play cornerback, they needed a roster spot available to activate another defensive back. With Thomas injured, it seems likely they are hoping he won’t get picked up by another team. Thomas’ salary is guaranteed anyway, so it doesn’t cost the Jets anything to do this – and they would get a cap credit if he was picked up by someone else. It sounds like they are planning to bring him back as soon as possible. However, there is a risk attached. If another team does pick him up, then they could regret it. Who remembers the Jets picking up Trevor Pryce from the Ravens in a similar situation in 2010?
With Thomas’ departure, Brandon Moore is now the longest tenured Jet.
As for the Keller and Conner news, this means that there will be more playing time for Jeff Cumberland and Konrad Reuland. Perhaps the Jets will look to go three wide more often as well.
