Buzz: Are the Jets a potential landing spot for Chris Johnson?

There’s been some internet chatter about the possibility of running back Chris Johnson joining the Jets. It was reported last night that the Titans are expected to release Johnson next week.

The 28-year old is a three time pro-bowler (albeit not since 2010) and has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his six seasons in the NFL.

At this stage, it’s worth emphasizing that there have been no direct links between the Jets and Johnson, although this NFL.com article identifies the Jets as a “potential landing spot” and Rich Cimini has pegged him as a “name to watch” if he gets cut.

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

What’s impressive about Johnson is that he’s a legitimate three-down back in an era where that’s a dying breed. Not only has Johnson not missed a game in five years, he’s also been in the top six for total snaps by a running back in each of the last four seasons. He therefore has a lot of experience on passing downs, both as a blocker (has stayed in to block 99 times on average in each of the past three seasons) and as a pass catcher (272 career receptions).

The downside with Johnson is that this workload might be starting to erode his trademark explosiveness. His yards per carry average dropped from 4.5 to 4.0 in 2013 and his longest run was just 30 yards, after he had rushed for three touchdowns of 80 yards or longer in 2012. He might therefore benefit from a reduced workload that would keep him fresh deeper into the season, as was the case when LaDainian Tomlinson joined the Jets and split carries with Shonn Greene. Tomlinson increased his yards per carry average from 3.3 in 2009 to 4.2 in 2010. Johnson is two years younger than Tomlinson was when he joined the Jets.

Interestingly, however, the NFL.com article above suggests Johnson is overrated as a receiver because he has poor hands and versatility, and that his receiving numbers are misleading because he catches a lot of dump-off passes. He may therefore not be as ideally suited to the Tomlinson career path as we might initially have thought.

I said  prior to the 2012 and 2013 season it was a MUST to get better on offense......People said it was just complaining and things would be fine....Things weren't fine......The offense was 30th ranked 2 years in a row....

So I am saying the SAME things AGAIN this year......Decker was a GOOD start......but clearly NOT ENOUGH....

Our defense is very good......They need help on the other side of the ball and it is CLEARLY Idzik's job to provide more playmakers.....People can FANTASIZE all they wish but fact is that Nelson, Kerley, Hill, Gates were the least productive group of WR's in the NFL last year and Geno clearly needs more help than just Decker....

I said the same thing in the past and I agree with you now but, we need help on defense, as well. That is why this preseason has been maddening.

@Hoz

I first started reading and posting on TJB just after Mangini was signed.  Man, that's scary. Back then I was The NYC Parking Expert.

About three years I think.  Used to post under Mike Francesser, but I re-installed my OS and forgot my password for livefyre, so now I just use my inactive twitter account.

A little over a year for me. Brendan, tsjc68 and Bradysucks jumped all over me because i thought Sanchez could pull an Alex Smith turn around under MM.

@Hoz  I'm pretty sure I started posting in the 2010 offseason, when the team was on Hard Knocks.

It ain't over til it's over........

It is a GOOD thing to REITERATE the need for offense in a PUBLIC forum........People read this blog......and while it is annoying to repeat oneself.......It seems necessary......

I still remember Idzik's conference call with season ticket holders prior to the 2013 season where he was asked directly why he didn't upgrade the WR's and add depth and he said there was no need to do so and that the WR's would surprise people.....

Obviously he was very wrong.....They surprised NOBODY

My first post was after we lost to the dirty birds in 09 and everyone was flipping out and said what I basically still say today that it's not over anything can happen, stay positive. Next thing I know, AFC championship game.

@levi I'm not sure either, but my first argument was with Hank about not wanting to trade multiple 1sts for Hay Cutler.

Decker was a GREAT signing.....Not disputing this......I just think Idzik needs to do a MUCH better job of adding depth behind Decker......The current group has been injury prone and unproductive

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks  On the pretty long list of pro's on Decker's pro/con list is durability!

If Decker pulls a hammy in the first week of camp I'm going to flip out. I can't handle another training camp of everyone pulling their hammy.

@Bent @bradysucks

My point exactly.....why keep the same group of WR's who aren't durable and keep bringing them back?......While injuries are part of the NFL the Jets and Sanjay Lal clearly have an issue at WR when they are struggling every week of the season at WR  to put  decent receivers on the field due to poor depth....

Bent

@bradysucks  They also had the most injuries in the WR and TE corps in BOTH years, by some margin.  Whatever the numbers are, they're misleading.

@Brendan

Whatever the rankings were for the passing game they were obviously  bad.......

Woody Johnson said he wants to win now......The Jets are not going to win if they can't score....

Rex puts a good defense on the field every year........We have a great offensive coordinator. It seems like a complete waste if John Idzik doesn't give Morninweg the players he needs to be succesful

I like the additions of Vick and Decker BTW

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks  BS, this is my point. When did they add Harvin? Was it the first year of their new regime? Second? Third? No, it was the 4th. They were middling record-wise in the first two years while the new GM sorted through the sht and built his roster. They made a jump that signified they were ready (while adding moderately-priced top-level FA's) so that's when they became aggressive.

It's Y2 in the Jets' program.

Can you please stop quoting "30th ranked offense," please? You're making it seem like they're already the 30th ranked offense in 2014. They added a top WR, their QB will be either entering his 2nd year or be a talented veteran (who is brittle), but either way it should be better than last year. The team won't be identical to last year's offense, but you're acting like it will be.

Edit: Also, where are you getting your rankings from? They were 28/29 in points and 30/25 in yards the past two years.

@levi @bradysucks @Brendan

The injuries have been an issue 2 years in  a row with this group......Time to change the personnel.....We need more guys than Decker......The Jets have been the 30th ranked pass offense 2 years in a row.....Time for a different formula

levi
levi

@bradysucks @Brendan  Im not gonna try to tell you last years WRs are great but I think its a bit unfair to speak of how bad they were without taking into consideration the injuries. If we would of had all of them healthy and on the field at the same time it might have been different. Also ahhh Geno sucked.

@Brendan @bradysucks

The Seahawks were built through the draft and it didn't stop them from signing Percy Harvin (who by the way made a HUGE play in the super bowl for them that sucked ALL life out of Denver)

The Seahawks also added Cliff Avril who is an impact player......

I am not demanding anything but if I were Woody Johnson  who clearly said he wants to "win now" just a few days ago then I would want to know what the plan is so that the Jets are not the 30th ranked offense AGAIN for the 3rd CONSECUTIVE year.......

We should be a top 20 offense......We have the money and the resources and the offensive coordinator and the draft picks where it should happen this year

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks Oh, so you and others want to see action and to convey that feeling you demand it now from a guy who has voiced numerous times that his primary way of building a team is the draft. Which hasn't happened yet.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

I am not looking for words from Idzik.....and neither are any of the fans upset the Jets didn't sign James Jones, D Jackson, Golden Tate, Maclin, Sanders, MJD etc........

I am looking for action......and to me there really is no excuse not to FOCUS on upgrading the weakest parts of your team.......

I don't care if we do it in the draft or free agency or through a trade........I do know that most of the time rookie WR's don't make an impact in their 1st year which makes it seem likely that we will AGAIN be relying on Stephen Hill, Kerley, Gates, and Nelson.....and this group has not been productive.....30th in the NFL is not productive

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks What is he supposed to say? "Well, I could compromise future cap space by redoing some contracts and opening up space to sign some more talented WR's, but that's the type of thing my predecessor did to get himself fired, so I think I'm going to stick to the plan and build this team through the draft and add select top-level players who are young enough to be part of the foundation."
