Buzz: CB Captain Munnerlyn to visit Jets

TheJetsBlog’s Jake Steinberg reports on the first defensive player to arrange a visit to the Jets.

We first reported on the Jets’ possible interest in Munnerlyn here. Munnerlyn is also visiting with the Bucs and Vikings.

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

Earlier this week, I wrote this:

Munnerlyn is a scrappy and feisty 5’8″ corner who does a lot of his best work in the slot. Any Jets interest in him is presumably of an exploratory nature at this time, as they would ideally prefer someone with more size. Munnerlyn has been a leader in Carolina as they’ve transitioned into a good team over the past few seasons. Jets fans will recall that he responded defiantly to Santonio Holmes’ comments that the Panthers’ corners were the weakness of their defense and then returned an interception for a touchdown when the teams met last season.

After releasing Antonio Cromartie a couple of days ago, the Jets are on the hunt for a starter to pair with last year’s first round pick Dee Milliner. There are still some starter-level options out there (including Cromartie himself) but the market is dwindling. One thing I like about Munnerlyn is that he can move inside in certain packages, which is useful because backups Darrin Walls and Ellis Lankster have been more effective on the outside than in the slot over the past couple of years, so it could give the Jets better flexibility.

thanks bent!  i guess healthy is the keyword...I'd prefer our cro too, he's a jet and he wants to be a jet and when hes on his game he can dominate.    huge question though, right?

Why does no one mention Austin Miles as a FA WR to bring in.

btw gang...lost in all this cromartie-rodgers is still a FA cornerback.

wouldn't he be an upgrade, and isn't he better than our cro, and munnerlyn? and couldnt we get him for reasonable dough?

hey guys, guess Im a little frustrated/bummed out. Have to be patient - we wont all know Izz's plan til after the draft.

Hopefully he adds the key players we need to be a playoff contender.

as you know I think we need some more offense - a jones, MJD or edelman type a corner, guard and OLB.

go jets

Leger Douzable Jets deal, one-year, $1 million, $150,000 signing bonus

They're underpaying him by like $25m but okay, I'll take it.

What about Thurmond?  Any news on where he's going?

@jimjets  Manish literally just tweeted that the Jets have reached out to DRC's people fwiw

I think a healthy Cro is better.

@SangHoon Lee  I can't believe the same fanbase that ran classless hooligan cancer Santonio Holmes (who in reality was a great mentor and a popular teammate) out of town is going to lobby for Steve Smith.

@whatnojets  Steiny just told me he was in Minnesota overnight.  He'll visit with the Jets and Bucs (not sure what order but we're efforting that) if he doesn't sign with the Vikes.

Some of the best FA signings come on day 3 or day 4

You never stop do you. Revis going to the Pats is a wash. They still have the same holes. Day one FA signings are more often than not a bust.

@scott g  If they sign Munnerlyn he'd start on the outside.  Then in nickel packages you have a bit of flexibility but I'd assume Wilson stays in the slot.

@Bent  wow, Idzik low balled him.

@buckner  Just left JAX, going back to Sea now. Has visits with Washington and TB scheduled.

@Bent Smith became a born again christian and radically changed his behavior of his earlier years, he is an ideal teammate now.

I don't want Steve Smith and I don't want Holmes. Both are problems as far as I'm concerned. I'm guilty of calling Holmes a cancer. That may harsh in your eyes and I respect that. But I saw enough with my eyes to not want him around.

@Bent When did Steve Smith get into a fight in the huddle?

@levi He's low-balling evvvvveryone.

@greggreen @Bent @jimjets  Sources told me last year that his hip was worse than he was letting on and definitely affecting him.

Doesn't mean it won't still be an issue though.

@Wil Mondejar @Bent  I was watching footage from last season just five minutes ago where his teammate got ejected and as he was leaving the field Smith was in his ear with an extended and foul mouthed "get off my field" tirade, that probably left the kid (a young player) feeling like crap.

Ideal teammate?  Holmes would have been lynched for doing that.  It was far worse than "the huddle incident".

@Pat d  The only difference would be that Smith would (presumably) be on such a cheap deal that if he decided to punch someone in the face we could just cut him. Cutting Holmes was never a realistic option (and no, I'm not saying he deserved to be cut necessarily).

Having said that, I agree with you. Smith is not my kind of guy either.

@SangHoon Lee  Exactly. In my view, there are three factors that go into how fans judge a player. Production, salary and antics. A player needs to be on the good side of the ledger in at least one of those categories. If a guy produces, fans will tend to put up with some bad behavior, and certainly won't begrudge a high salary. If the salary is reasonable and there are no antics, fans will tend to be more hopeful that performance might come (Stephen Hill is a good example, I think...although some people call him a bust, I don't think very many people "hate" him).

Holmes did not score particularly well in any of the three categories, so he gets what he gets.

@Bent as Brendan would say: Im fully boned!

@levi @Brendan  Luckily so is the cap.  If the cap goes up by 10m a year then we can afford Wilkerson in 2015, Coples in 2016 and Richardson in 2017.

levi
levi

@Brendan Its probably a good thing because Wilkshake and Coples contracts are coming up fast.

@Bent @Wilkershakes @buckner @Brendan  Hey do you think that we might sign captain then possibly trade wilson to get more ammo to trade up in the draft for top flight pass catchers? what do you think Wilsons value would be? 5th? 6th?

Bent
Bent moderator

@buckner @Bent @Brendan  Browner, but he's visiting the Pats and suspended for four games anyway.

How about sign Munnerlyn and Browner, start Milliner for the first four weeks and then depending how that goes, you could trade Wilson after week four if he becomes surplus to requirements?

greggreen
greggreen

@Bent @buckner @Brendan  But taller lol. I think i got him confused with maxwell. Do you think thurmond would be a better fit then captain?

Bent
Bent moderator

@buckner @Brendan  Kinda similar to Captain in the respect that he was a slot guy that only moved outside when Browner was injured.
