Buzz: Did FSU WR Kelvin Benjamin ‘blow off’ a private workout?

Did Florida State WR Kelvin Benjamin, potential first rounder, flake out on a private workout?  According to NFL.com’s Gil Brandt, Benjamin recently “blew off” a scheduled workout with an NFL coach, claiming that he was “too tired.”

Since Brandt tweeted this, Benjamin’s agent Eugene Parker has contested the report, but Brandt says he trusts his source and is sticking by the story. (NFL, April 10)

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Did the “special trip” come in conjunction with the FSU Pro Day?  If that was the case then there were about five NFL coaches there, with names like Chip Kelly (Eagles), Mike Tomlin (Steelers), Jim Caldwell (Lions) and even Jets head coach Rex Ryan among the attendees.  (NFL, April 10)

At this point, the smokescreens heading into the NFL Draft will get very thick.  Was this real?  Was this planted?  Was the private workout expected on the same day as Benjamin’s Pro Day?  If that was the case then it would seem a little more plausible that Benjamin would have been gassed and this is being overblown for a team with either a late first or early second round pick.

Regardless, if Benjamin in fact did blow off workouts, then there might be a chilling effect on his draft stock.  Benjamin’s draft stock had him flirting with the middle of the first round, but with concerns about his technique and now this rumor, Benjamin could easily drop into the second round.

Not my top choice for Jets at 18, but would not be disappointed if we took him.  His size is something special and he should at worst be a great red zone weapon, but also can become a true number one, has big play ability.  Reports like this are worrisome, and the fact that he's old for a draft pick at 23 and somewhat raw is a concern.  Would be thrilled if we somehow got him in the 2nd, and pretty pleased with taking him in 1st.

NFLN analyst said he thought KB might become a TE in a couple of years or play hybrid

Evans, Watkins, Ebron, Beckham, Cooks, Dennard, or Mack at 18... I'm easy!!

i cant see this being a smokescreen...if some team leaked out false info and made kb drop is the same as taking money out of his pocket

Gotta say, the "some team leaked this false rumor to make him fall" idea comes off like some serious conspiracy theory paranoia BS to me. And seeing how a team doing that would qualify for defamation and libel, which could be a felony, I have serious doubts any team would go that far while also involving some random reporter to help them commit the crime.

Can't imagine us drafting KB in the first. And since I've pretty much penciled in ODBjr /Cooks as our first round pick, I don't really see a scenario where we draft KB.

Benjamin could be the new Hernandez in NE's offense

The story could also be a plant to help him fall into the second and into the laps of some cloak-and-dagger team. Pats anyone?

Is anyone surprised----he is a WR after all.

These are the kind of draft stories that I absolutely hate. Who knows what really happened. Gil Brandt certainly doesn't. Maybe the kid had already done three workouts that day and his agent told him to stop. Does that mean he has "character" issues. All we know (apparently) is that some unnamed person didn't get exactly what they wanted - whatever that was. The bottom line is this: the kid was at the combine, he was at his pro day, all of his games are on tape, all of his coaches at FSU are available to be interviewed, I assume he's available to be brought in for a private workout if that's what a team wants. etc There is plenty of information for teams to evaluate whether this kid is going to be a good NFL football player. And NFL teams will be doing just that - making their own evaluations. I seriously doubt that some stupid rumor from Gil Brandt will factor into it at all.

Kelvin Benjamin would be a great pick if we trade back the first or in 2nd round.  He just has a little "it" factor that is not just X's and O's.   However there are a lot of big WR's in this draft if we want one.  I think we need Brandin Cooks or OBJ more so we are not forced to overpay for Kerley next year.  Along with ASJ if we can trade up to get him.

@jvsvn  game film of him playing against college kids isn't really going to tell if he is going to be good in the NFL

Overpay for Kerley? Are you nuts? Kerley's career stats suck

The other Jets receivers are so terrible that I guess Kerley in comparison seems like a guy Idzik would overpay to keep (he won't/nor should he)

As I was writing this Kerley pulled another hamstring

(Rolls eyes)

@bradysucks  lol yeah because Kerley isn't one of the most underrated slot receiver in the NFL or anything

I already know your response to this "his stats are horrible you're in idiot for saying that."

But you said it yourself, the other receivers suck so defenses only have to account for him. He is the most dependable and clutch WR that the Jets have had for a while. You really need some football knowledge. Your comments get dumber and dumber with each thread
