Buzz: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will meet with Jets

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will fly to New York to meet with the Jets (Schefter, March 14). The Jets have had discussions with Rogers-Cromartie (Mehta, March 13).

Rogers-Cromartie had 31 combined tackles and three interceptions for the Broncos in 2013, returning one for a touchdown.

The Broncos previously had an offer out to Rogers-Cromartie, but pulled it after they signed Aqib Talib (Crabtree, March 12).

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

DRC is the best of what’s left, but he’s a pretty good option and as NFL Media’s Chris Wesseling told us today on the podcast, thought DRC would be a “great fit” for the Jets needs at this point.

Other than his talks with his former club, this is DRC’s first known visit. Rodgers-Cromartie is the best corner left on the market and the Jets would be wise to pull out all the stops.  Rodgers-Cromartie offers the Jets the press coverage that Rex Ryan loves.  The former Bronco ranked out as the fifth best corner and is just 28, though he might have been hurt by his open talk of retirement during Super Bowl week.

Now that the initial 72 hour window has passed prices are going to start to come down on players.  See if John Idzik doesn’t start to pick up his level of activity in bringing in free agents.

need info now on DMRC lol patriots D going to be tough this year...key to beating them is running the ball but now that they got 2 lock down corners that may not be easy either....the key to winning is our D line and Geno...better hope he takes a big step forward this yr

Can we spend it all ?

I am reading that we are now ~32M under cap and if we release Sanchez we will be back to 40M.  I think we have to save some for the draft picks. That leaves $ for ~5 contracts like Deckers. Am I missing something ?

Who do you think we are saving it all for ?
Are there ways to move the extra cap to next year ?

What is Woody's history of spending under the cap ?

If the meeting was last night I'm guessing it didn't go very well, cause I'm not seeing any breaking news.

Somebody who could be a nice pick up in the draft mid round is Pierre Desir, big strong CB long arms best leaper of all CB's in combine only knock is that he is from a small school.

I'm starting to convince myself that Brandin Cooks is worth the 18th pick if available. He's a straight playmaker

All you Sanchez bashes are so off base, as if their are better options out there. Throw out year 4 ( worst OC of all- time in Sporano,Tebow nonsense, no LT ,santonio and Keller out for most of the season, Wayne "turnstyle" HUNTER, Plaxico not resigned for red zone) and your gonna give up on a 27 year old who had 26 passing and 6 rushing td in year 3!! Now we have Marty as OC, David Lee as QB coach and you would rather trade him for a 7 rd pick that never makes it than renegotiate it to a manageable number and have him beat out Geno like he did last year !

I think Sanchez will end up on the Raiders. I don 't think they are dumb enough to trade for him though. But who knows, it is the Raiders. I also can see the Raiders drafting Watkins and Sanchez actually doing quite well.

Is the raiders dumb enough to trade for Sanchez? Idzik should give them a call.

Guys idzik is gm that believes in building through the draft. We need a cb that's obvious but it's not the end of the world. We haven't overpaid and most teams have, two steady moves very good receiver, serviceable lineman with upside. There is still talent out there not serviceable. We are not building for Super Bowl even though that is goal. We are not going to become Super Bowl contenders in one off season with cap space, proper building takes time a good team has depth. I trust our gm he just started painting let's wait to see his completed piece of art, he has been doing a pretty good job so far

@jimjets  Not many OLBs left.  Older guys like Spencer, Harrison and Phillips seem to be the pick of the bunch right now.  Slim pickings at guard.  I'd prefer Colon to anyone out there right now.

Bent
Bent moderator

@Tom Morgan  Yes, don't worry, they can roll it forwards if unused - and although there is a four year minimum spend threshold, the Jets shouldn't have any problems meeting that.

Woody always spends to the cap but has been known to move money between years to maximize flexibility.

I don't think they're done spending but wouldn't be surprised to see them keep a sizable chunk in reserve.  They could still spend it later if any big names are released or made available for a trade.

@dobermite

It's today, not last night.

Brian Costello from the Post just predicted DRC would sign for around 7m a year, but was clear to point out this was just a guess.

@mustang66  That's the ticket!! Giving 4 mil a year to a guy who catched 46 passes and 426 yards. Lets pay again all these albatroses the way Tanny worked it and be in a cap hell all over again! Sleep tight...

Been hearing Sanchez will do quite well since 2009. It's 2014.

I wish the Jets defense could play against Sanchez every game. It would be a great season and we'd lead the NFL in turnovers and pick 6's.

Not enough offensive players in your mock draft. Our defense is our strength and offense is our weakness.

@Carlos Jimenez  I think going with Lee at 18 is a mistake, I have a feeling he's not what he was before his injury, that's why he ran a 4.52 40 at the combine and he skipped the 40 on his pro day.  I would go with Brandin Cooks there, unless ofcourse Ebron is still around.

@Trav Rivera You are very positive but, reality says that Idzik is missing the boat.  We were 8-8 last season, not 3-13.  We are fairly close. A good off-season can easily make us contenders.   He has done absolutely nothing to make us better.  His best move has been resigning Douzable.  With all of that cap space, he has let the better FA's go elsewhere.  We still have no guards at all.  You cannot win without an O-line.  We still have a horrible receiving staff.  Not one offensive player scares me.  Hey, we don't even have a real QB.  Idzik is doing a very poor job.  I realize it is not over but, many of the best FA's are gone.

jetfan13

For who Vick or maybe you want Andy Dalton (1 td ,6 int. ) in 3 playoff games with AJ Green and all his weapons. How quickly we forget

I can't argue with that. Never understood why Tanny extended his contract when he did.

Can we teleport Sanchez (like in Star Trek) to the bench on an Arena League or CFL team which is where he belongs......

He isn't good and never has been. He's a turnover machine and he isn't accurate and his arm strength is nothing special.

I kinda agree with you, I just have a hard time projecting what Cooks is in the NFL.

As for TE, I like Nikla.

@harvlis @Trav Rivera  actually it's not what reality says, it's what your opinion says.

Bill Polian says that FA signings are about 50% successful - this includes the big names that you think Idzik whiffed on. By not overpaying and trading away picks, we are enduring that we will be in good shape every year to make solid, though not very flashy moves.

The 2nd and 3rd tier FA signings are also in that 50% grouping. It's the same way to approach the draft - if your evaluation shows that you can likely get very good production, based on scheme fit as well as talent, from a guy you can get cheaper/later, you do that.

'Bout time we had a GM who did things intelligently instead of listening to the cries of desperate fans.

Pat d
Pat d

No offensive FA scares me. Picked up Decker and at 18 the Jets can get a WR that is better than any FA with exception of Graham.

tal8
tal8

@harvlis @Trav Rivera  So we don't have any WRs even after the Decker signing, No QB, no guards... Basically nothing what so ever... and still we managed to make it to 8-8...And "We're fairly close". Wow!

tal8
tal8

@jetfan13  I have Geno, who will probably be better than last year and there're many FA and draft prospects who can be had... Without Keeping Sanchez's circus around. It'll be very good for both parties to part ways at this point.

tal8
tal8

@Pat d  Extending was legit... The money was obscure

NYCPEinGermany
NYCPEinGermany

@MPTG_Frank only because they might think there is competition for his services and want to be sure they get him

tal8
tal8

@Pat d  He might... It just that all question marks surrounding him doesn't make him a 1st rd pick. I think at the moment, his ceiling is very low. Probably a slot receiver at best.

tal8
tal8

@Marvel @Pablo Bruno  I don't think we should take a WR at 1st unless Evans dropped by some miracle or we trade down. I think TE is the right way to go be it Ebron or Amaro. On the 2nd u can go with Adams / Robinson / Moncrief

tal8
tal8

@harvlis  After 4.5 days of FA the jury is out? Can I join them for a drink though?! I need them shots...

harvlis
harvlis

If you are not a little desperate, you have not been a long time jets fan. 1969! We do not know if Idzik is intelligent. At this point, the jury is certainly out. We are still missing an O-line, a defensive backfield, and we need more weapons. If we get DRC and MJD, I would feel a little better but, I would want a veteran guard and I am not sure that a good one is available. Like you, I am hoping for the best but, if the worst comes, I am going to point it out. Idzik has no excuses.

harvlis
harvlis

We had Colon at RG. We had Cro at CB. We can't replace everybody in the draft. Decker is okay but, he is not the savior, on offense. I hope that when the off-season is over, we are in good shape, but there were lots of players available and there is a deep draft. If we go into the season with lots of holes, there is no excuse. We shall see.
