Buzz: Is Marty Mornhinweg the New OC?

According to Adam Caplan and Manish Mehta, the Jets will name Marty Mornhinweg their offensive coordinator.

Mornhinweg has been with the Eagles since 2003 and has spent the last six seasons as offensive coordinator and assistant Head Coach. He has been a proponent of the West Coast Offense, which would represent a shift in philosophy for the Jets, who had been focused on a “ground and pound” attack over the past few years.

In the late 1990’s Mornhinweg was the offensive coordinator and QB coach for the Packers and 49ers. He was also head coach of the Lions for two seasons where he had a record of 5-27.

While there is some speculation that this could lead to Mike Vick being reunited with Mornhinweg, sources have apparently told the Daily News that this is not something that is likely at the moment.

Over the last three seasons Dwayne Harris has been one of the best special teams players in pro football.

His career 11.1 yards per punt return is tied for 11th place in the history of the league.

His career 26.5 yards per kickoff return is tied for 16th place in the history of the league.

He is also one of NFL's best gunners on the punt coverage team and was frequently double-teamed last year. He has excellent speed and is a sure tackler.

Harris is an effective L2 and R2 (second in from the sideline, left and right) on the kickoff coverage team. Again, excellent speed and elusiveness in the open field.

He is also an asset in the running game as a stalk blocker, especially in outside zone runs, where he cracks on the safety in the alley.

$7.1 million pro-rated out over five years is a reasonable price for a very good player.

Good signing.

@andyb Thanks for showing some optimism and common sense. Those things are rare on this site.

Seems like they could have signed Cole - a bigger need - for similar total dollars. Puzzling move.

Al they need now is a Special Teams coach that can show players blocking schemes on returns

I'm sorry I just can't understand the money in this deal.  This seems like a terrible case of overpaying for marginal talent.  I hope Reese knows something we don't here... I don't like this move at all.
