Buzz: Jets have not reached out to DeSean Jackson

Adam Schefter has an update on the DeSean Jackson situation, which may come as a surprise to many people who had been considering it a foregone conclusion that the Jets would show interest.

The Jets were previously reported to have reached out to the Eagles before Jackson was released about the the possibility of trading for the 27-year old.

This doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that Schefter’s report was inaccurate and the Jets have actually reached out or, alternatively, that they intend to reach out but have yet to do so. However, it does raise questions as to whether the Jets were turned off by the recent reports scrutinizing Jackson’s off-field activities.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

It flies in the face of earlier reports that the Jets did in fact show interest since Jackson’s release and that’s probably the most relevant piece of this story.  Maybe the Jets are slow playing the market?  It’s possible, but seems dangerous if they are interested in him.

I get that there are character concerns about Jackson that weren’t public knowledge a month ago, but the reports of his gang affiliations are at best circumstantial.  NJ.com is patting themselves on the backs for putting together a story that was in all likelihood leaked by the Eagles organization to begin with.  Did they uncover a few eyebrow raising items to share with the public?  Yes, but to think that the NFL Security office didn’t already know much of those details is unlikely.  There’s more truth behind the simple fact that Chip Kelly didn’t want Jackson on his team and GM Howie Roseman jumped through whatever hoops allowed him to keep his job.

For me, it is the most predictable yet simultaneously frustrating development.  I get that John Idzik’s Jets are all about “sustainable success” but there is a way to be successful in the short term by adding Jackson while also adding the players that the team needs from a longer term perspective — even at the same position.

If the Jets are going to idly watch another of the best players to hit free agency in the last month find a new team and do virtually nothing about it, then they better pick up a helluva a receiver in the first two days of the NFL draft.

jets are run by a bean counter.  he doesn't want to spend the money they have.  this payroll is 50 million less than the Ravens.  therefore the jets will be what they always are.

the worst run team outside of oakland.

I'm not fully on board with the Idzik approach. The NYJ are very close to a playoff team. Idzik operates as though we were 4-12 last year. If we want to run at the playoffs, you don't start a rook at CB vs Tom Brady. When you have the chance to upgrade the worst offense in the NFL with a rarely available #1 WR in his prime, AT LEAST MAKE THE FREAKING CALL.

At least on paper, D-Jax would be a perfect fit especially now that he wont cost any draft picks.  he would be great opposite Decker with Kerley in the slot.  That would also free up our first rounder so we could get another position of need, like CB or TE, or maybe S.  Dennard or Ebron in the first would make me one happy camper.  Not to say that we shouldnt draft another wideout, but with the addition of Jackson we could wait til the third or maybe the fourth round in an apparently deep draft.  Building through the draft is exactly what we need to do but filling in holes with proven vets in their prime IMO is like getting a free draft pick.  D jax is only 27, hardly over the hill, and if he were a free agent at the start he would have definitely topped the list.  As far as him being a bad personality in the locker room, from what I have read, everyone has given him glowing reviews with the exception of Chip Kelly and sports writers that just want to be controversial. A move like this would definitely strengthen their "win now" argument.

(miketaliaferro) Oh, c'mon, guys! "Raises questions" about Jets' reaction to the gang stories?!?!? Uh, Brian, how about "shines a giant klieg light" on the Jets' reaction to the Jackson gang stories?

A lot of over reacting and counterbalancing going on lately. This seems quite the norm around here for as long as I remember in terms of off seasons. I'd have to give Idzik a C+ because of the cap space and the talent that was there at the start of FA. Idzik's FA approach has put more pressure on the draft to produce day 1 starters and that makes for situations like Winters (bad) and Richardson (Good). D-Jax or Doug Baldwin (via trade) would def bring that grade up to a B+. Unless we can get a starting quality EXPERIENCED CB, that's as high as he goes. Asking Milliner to be your #1 CB in his second year is asking a lot considering the safety play is mediocre at best.

I don't understand this hesitation. THIS GUY IS A TALENT in the league!! He scores touchdowns. Something that we don't have! I understand Idzik wants to build thru the draft but we have plenty of CAP SPACE for this guy. Pull the trigger and sign him.

At the time of his release, I felt DJax was not a Jet "type".  What is a Jet type?  Play so-so until December and play golf early?  Tired of that.

GET JACKSON!

We got Phil, get the other!

Ok I understand where most of you is coming from & hate to say I told you so, teams around us is improving & Idzik is going with a plan y'all lips to god ears.

We have no idea whether this report is even true or not. What we do know is that Idzik keeps everything close to the vest and the media has been forced to speculate all off season...Well actually all last season too.

Hoz
Hoz

The same guys that's defending Idzik what are you going to say if we go 6-10 next season? is that part of the plan too.

@nagel100  LOL that's just laughable....u seem to think they need to spend money to be run well, oakland is breaking the bank, so they are poorly run?

The Eagles just let DJax go. They couldn't get a 7th round draft pick for him. Now if the Jets and Chiefs pass that should tell you everything. That would mean his current team, former head coach and former offensive coordinator want nothing to do with him. If that isn 't a red flag then tell me what is. This should be a wake up call for DJax.

Pat d
Pat d

Wake up dude. Why did Chip Kelley and the Eagles let him go?

@Eric Falkman  he doesn't have a trigger.  he is a horrible GM.  woody is a horrible owner and the Jets are mired in mediocrity.

Yes pull the trigger and move up and get Evans.

@Eric Falkman  He may. Just because reports said the Jets didn't reach out to him on Friday, doesn't mean the Jets haven't reached out to him today.

Lets hope.

@Bent  weren't they already reported in having interest in him? How are they considered wildcard teams for Jackson?

@Bent If D-Jax ends up with the Bills then this thing will have been botched big time

@Hoz  Let's see what happens with DJax first.

Ya I don't get the people who feel its unfair to criticize idziks choices. Sure the moves he's making or not making are part of the plan. However that in noway makes the plan good!!!!! Same thing with the mets when we first got sandy, and we are still waiting for a winning team.

DrJonathanReefer

@Hoz

If it happens, I'll tell you how I feel when we cross that point, but being upset over speculation is stupid.

did you think we'd win 8 games last march?

levi

@Hoz  I dont consider it defending him when I say he said from the start this is what he was gonna do and it required patience. Its not my fault you didnt believe him and thought he was gonna light up free agency with 40 mil.

Brian Serviss
Brian Serviss

@Pat d  or the fact that the Chiefs don't have the cap space to compete with teams like Oakland and the BIlls? That's just too reasonable though

Pat d
Pat d

There's a reason the Eagles let him go and the Jets will pass.

Hopefully nothing happens with DJax

DrJonathanReefer

It's fine if you want to criticize idzik and I have yet to make a decision on him.

Now, claiming we will be 3-12 or 6-10 or is gonna be the worst team in the NFL is just pure speculation and frankly is insulting to some fans like myself.

I myself will be disappointed.

Its normal stuff I guess, when I posted my offseason wish list I said. " This kind of stuff is stupid because all it does is get people upset." People tend to talk themselves into things that they have 0 control over. When it doesn't go their way, they flip out. It's march 29th and this guy is calling it a failed season already. 5 months before a single snap. Its amusing.

Will Taylor
Will Taylor

Ya ...because the eagles and jets are known for making wise player choices.

@Pat d

Was there a reason Bill Parcells let Hugh Douglas go when he arrived all those years ago?

Was there a reason Rex Ryan let Kerry Rhodes go not too long ago.

Just because the guy doesn't fit in where he was doesn't mean he won't work out with a new team.

boozer

If Marty is saying stay away, you know something is up.

Ill trust that if the jets want to stay away that its for a good reason.

reprocity

@DrJonathanReefer @levi @Hoz   There usually is a direct link from the offseason to the regular season. So far we've pretty much broke even and if that leads to another 8-8 year we'll look back and say "At least we didn't overpay for anybody." Also the Cap is expected to go up next year as well. Prob not 10 mill, but even half that would let us resign whoever we want and still have 10's of millions over the cap.

In short, you're right "People need to chill" but on the other hand, even General Custer had a plan.

He's been GM one year dude

DrJonathanReefer

@Hoz @DrJonathanReefer

what belief? I have 0 belief. All I've said is its march 29th and if the jets suck this year, i'll talk about them sucking if they do. Since nobody knows if they will or will not, I have no reason to complain now. You seem to be angry that we aren't flipping out over the team 5 months before the season starts. Geez dude, I hope you're only like this with the jets, because I wonder how all this speculation effects other aspect of your life. if it does I truly feel  for you.

Hoz

@DrJonathanReefer  You go with your beliefs if that make you happy, fool me once fool me twice I see what's going on here have a good day.

@Hoz @DrJonathanReefer @levi  And where did Tom Brady come from?  Draft.  6th round.

Pats have been using the draft very well for a very long time to build and rebuild their team.

DrJonathanReefer
DrJonathanReefer

@Hoz @DrJonathanReefer@levi

Oh since they have won every year but 1 since Brady started playing. That's such a stretch. Jealousy of their success is not a reason to complain. The Pats haven't only been better then us for 15 years, they been better then 90% of the NFL.

Hoz

@DrJonathanReefer @Hoz @levi  No I haven't but I bet you the patriots when this division & they didn't even play a snap yet either.

did they play a single snap yet?

Geez dude, you have 0 idea how the team will end up. You can speculate, you can tell me what holes we have, but the fact is it is march 29th. the season doesn't start until September. Also, these holes, might be holes to you, but maybe the its the young players time to step up.

@DrJonathanReefer  Everything dosent have to be instant have you seen what happen the last 45 years? lol

@DrJonathanReefer @levi @Hoz  what I call a fail season? did you see our secondary? I know brady is licking his chops, o line is a mess, we need a TE, No pure kick/punt returner don't let me start, You may be good with losing but I'm not.

he is slightly over dramatic, but its how the world is now. everything has to be instant. if its not, people will flip out.
