Former Jets OL Jason Smith was at the Jets’ facility yesterday and the NY Post’s Brian Costello reported that a reunion could be on the cards:
He later confirmed that a source told him this is happening.
Bent, TheJetsBlog.comThis is an interesting development. Smith played a bigger role than some realize last year as the team’s jumbo tight end. He ended up playing only 19 fewer snaps than Vladimir Ducasse, who was of course on the field for every third drive.
It’s worth noting, however, that Marty Mornhinweg barely used a jumbo package at all last year – just a handful of times, all in short yardage. Therefore, this signing is likely more to do with improving the team’s depth.
Ducasse was emerging at the team’s best backup at both guard and tackle, but now he’s in the starting lineup, their depth at the tackle position is suddenly looking somewhat shaky.
This could signify that the team is not expecting Oday Aboushi to contribute this year and might even suggest the fifth-rounder’s roster spot is in jeopardy. While he has settled down since a rocky start to preseason, he still looks raw and could be a year away.
The team will need to create a roster spot for him, because they are already at the limit.
