Buzz: Ward another option at safety?

Manish Mehta’s mythical “Persons of Interest” list keeps getting longer and longer:

One report says there are up to a dozen teams interested in Ward so far. The 27-year-old safety was a leader and a bright spot on a poor Browns team over the past few seasons.

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

While it may seem like the Jets are being linked with every single available free agent (with the glaring omission so far being Jairus Byrd), Ward is actually the only one of PFF’s top ten free agents that the Jets have been linked with so far. However, whether being a “Person of Interest” means the Jets have serious interest in signing a player or just view them as a fallback option (or are even just watching so they can establish the value for another target) remains to be seen.

With his ability to play in the box or cover downfield, I’m expecting Ward to receive a contract with an average annual value somewhere between $7 million and $9 million.

8 teams have reached out to Quarless according to reports....I hope the Jets are one of them.

What happens if we keep Holmes and Sanchez?

Does the Jets universe implode and create a black hole in Flo Park?

i hope the safties are the plan B if if we dont sign verner. seems like too much money to invest when we still badly need offensive help

@a57se  The last thing Idzik should be doing is getting involved in a bidding war for Quarless.

@a57se Same number that have supposedly reached out to Finley.

Wonder how much overlap there is between those two lists of eight.

@Johnsbodybyvi Ledo  Stop whining, it's not like an internet community in 2014 should be able to post Tweets or Youtube links on a message board or anything. Stop being ridiculous!

@Marvel  Well, just because they decimated his offense in 2011, had him play behind Hunter and a center in Baxter who stepped in for a few games when Mangold was hurt and who never took an NFL snap, and as a result Sanchez was obliterated, beat to a pulp and was never the same, then they gave the biggest distraction in sports history in Tebow to him, then, threw him to the wolves in a meaningless preseason game behind a jiffy lube oline in the 3rd quarter, which he was injured and his season was lost, and then to add insult to injury, management said he should have protected himself better!!!!! I think Woody is on to something ya think?

The Jets WRs last 3 years have been one of the weakest in the NFL.

@Brendan @a57se  Getting involved in bidding wars is fine.  It's winning them that can be the issue.

Chance of that less than 0...Or as Clemens said "how do you prove a negative" because that what the chances on this really are.

Brendan

@williamg1 Oh, and you can't even mention the word "Dis/qus" because that's the the bad word that George Carlin left off his list, apparently.

@jake100 @Marvel  I just want to point out that the play that Sanchez got hurt in was a 2nd string o-line vs a 3rd string d-line. They should absolutely have been able to protect him, and he only really got hit because he decided to leave the pocket and not be protected by the o-line at all. If he had thrown the ball on time, or even threw it away when he left the pocket, then he wouldn't have taken that hit. Geno played behind that exact same line against tougher competition and was fine.

@Pat d

When you've watched every jet game for the past several years, comments like yours don't hit that hard .  QBs help make receivers, I've seen Mark left 100 plays on the field that were there to be made. we could do this all day, bottom line Mark didn't get it done.

Brendan
Brendan

@Pat d  Mark didn't play last year, so that is irrelevant.

@levi I never get my hopes up for FA signings anymore, but he's the guy that would make me happiest on defense.

levi
levi

@Brendan Dont get your hopes up though I dont see it happening.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi Revis/Cro 2.0. Milliner brings the physicality, Verner brings the finesse, they're a headache for whatever offense they're matched up with thanks to the contrasting styles. It also works great when you're matching up CB's with WR's. As we saw with Revis/Cro, many teams have WR's that differ in styles as well, so the matchup flexibility is huge.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se "One trick pony" what does that mean? If his trick is covering WR's, and he's better at it than almost anyone else, why is that a negative?

Don't need a hitter at CB.

And thank you for finally answering my question with something of substance. I disagree, but I can see the concern.

But he is, most definitely, "that" good. You don't make an All-Pro team by mistake.

levi
levi

@Brendan I admit I would like a more physical CB that can press and help in run support but he is a skilled cover corner and I think he and Milliner would be a good combo.

@Brendan @a57se

The guy was rumored as being near benching after the 2012 season...he h played well for the fist half of last season albeit as a one trick pony. he is not a hitter and is poor in run support. The guy just ISN'T that good.

He is a half year wonder with a limited skill set.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I'm not going to do that, so you can stop asking. I've tried it in the past, you couldn't ignore me on your end.

And it's true. Numerous times we've heard a guy "isn't a fit," then the team brings him in and wouldn't you know it! He's a fit.

Ruling that out as a reason (not saying it wouldn't end up being one, just tabling that for a moment), why are you so against Verner? He's elite at his position, he's not even in his prime yet and he's a man corner. I still don't understand how you so emphatically rule him out as a good player for the Jets.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Why don't you stop trying to tell me what I can or can;t say?

In Fact, why don't you just stop responding to what I post. The Blog would be a better place for it.....

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Bidding for the services of an elite player > bidding for the services of a role player

And will you stop the "fit the system" stuff, please? Coples didn't "fit the system" as an edge guy. Richardson didn't "fit the system" as an interior guy. Cromartie didn't "fit the system" because he was a finesse guy. Rex fits his system to the players he has, not the other way around.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se@Brendan

Bidding wars only hurt the team that wins if the player doesn't pan out like Nnamdi and the Eagles or Albert and the redskins or Verner and the Jets......:)

a57se

@Brendan @Bent

Yeah, we should get in a bidding war for Verner, a guy who doesn't fit our system instead......

@Bent Right, should've phrased my statement better.

@jaygo I certainly don't. I made the "POI" observation last night, it's hilarious how anyone available is suddenly making their way onto that list. Covering all his bases, that Manish.

@Pat d   Jets wrs are the weakest in the league. The supporting cast has been nonexistent for years, that why the huge push to change this now under Idzik and that is spot on!!!!! When Kerley is your best wr you are in big trouble!

Pat d
Pat d

I have watched every game also and the Jets WRs have been bad. Very seldom does a Jet make a great catch. I watch a lot of other teams and WRs are constantly making catches behind them, catches that are high etc. I have said many times that Mark looked terrible in 2012. But it doesn't change the fact that the Jets have been weak at WR.

Bytor
Bytor

@Pat d  He'd be better, but he'd still be the worst skill position guy on our team. How many times must a receiver run a perfect route and Marky throws behind him to minimize yac?

We romanticize some playoff success. He simply couldn't sustain it because he stinks.

levi
levi

@Pat d  Does it matter who he has for WR's when he's throwing the ball directly at a DB? How many freakin times did he fumble? The guy has been a turnover machine every year he has played.

Brendan
Brendan

@Pat d  Okay, what is the deal with this Sanchez/Watkins thing? You keep bringing it up, it has less than a 1% chance of happening, in all likelihood.

Pat d
Pat d

You are dead wrong Bytor. Sanchez played very good in the playoffs. If the team that drafts Watkins picks up Sanchez you will be surprised.

Bytor
Bytor

@jake100  Their supporting cast has been miserable, agreed. Their headliner was even worse. Marky with Megatron and AJ Green would still stink.

Pat d
Pat d

The weapons Geno had were one of the worst in football

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@Bytor @jake100 @Pat d  Look at the teams that get to the big dance and look at what those QBS have around them!   If they have Kerley as their best wr who would not even be a starter on most teams, you are in big trouble. I never heard of a team go far with a supporting cast like the Jets have. A QB needs talent around him.

levi
levi

@jake100  Sanchez certainly didnt help out any of his receivers either. However, he did make a few DB's look good.

Bytor
Bytor

@jake100 @Pat d  Then you'd have all that money plus I'd give you a pair of nickels when I say the ultimate skill position was the worst, here's looking at you Marky.

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@Pat d  If I had a dime for every analyst that said the Jets have had the worst skill position players on offense the last few years I would be Rich!  Geno did  better with that huge handicap of poor talent around them than Chez did I will admit, but until that changes, the jets wont be a serious threat in the NFL with whomever is the QB barring an elite one and that is debatable. We need an offense with some serious playmakers, that simple.

Brendan
Brendan

@Pat d  No, you can't say that about Geno at all.

Pat d
Pat d

It is relevant. You could say Geno hasn't been given a fair shake either,
