Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson likely out of OTAs

Chris Johnson said he will likely be held out of the upcoming OTAs (Darcy, May 22).

Johnson said he will continue to rehab his knee.

In April, Johnson said his knee, on which he had surgery to repair a torn meniscus, is healthy and he’s close to resuming football activities. He shot down any rumors of arthritis in his knee (TJB, April 17).

He previously said he believes he’ll be ready for the start of training camp.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

When it comes to practice, Rex Ryan has always been cautious with his veteran players who expect to see significant playing time.  Right now there’s no rush to get Chris Johnson onto the field with actual football games that matter just under four months away.  Still, it is something to monitor closely over the course of training camp as we saw last year with Chris Ivory.  His slow start put more pressure on the rest of the offense.  Of course, this offense should have much more talent on it than last year’s team did and so the impact of one player will likely lessen the impact of the group as a whole.

Question..

Is the 3rd RB on the team or will he be scooped up after another team downsizes?

He's holding out for a new contract!

Welp...we're definitely going winless during OTAs now.

@BDarc23  He must drink for free every St. Patrick's Day.

@Marcus Armstrong  Wow, his body was still maturing during his previous seasons, does that make him 6' 5" now? Running 4.35 holy cow, I wonder if his stride is longer now, wouldn't be surprised if his straight line speed increased atleast marginally?  Can be a threat like Randy Moss, ( ducks )

@Marcus Armstrong  Didn't that happen before? I could've sworn we've talked about him growing during an offseason.

No wonder he looks so bad on the field. He's just an awkward, uncoordinated teenager.

@Marvel I think Sheldon Richardson has the last spot locked-up.

@Bent  Hey now, we were okay without him last year. I think we might even be undefeated in OTA's this year.

@Bent  We should float a rumor to Manish Mehta that Chris Johnson is skipping out on OTAs to go see his younger sister play an NCAA Softball regional game at Clemson.

@juunit  I wonder if his hands grew an inch as well.  Wouldn't that be nice?

@tsjc68 @Bent

As long as he doesn't show up in any NJ parking lots with Synthetic Marijuana and well, you know.....

The height growth is new though? You really don't hear about that much in pro sports. He really wasn't done growing smh..Think he did himself (and us) a disservice coming out so early. I kinda feel bad for him.

@jsadolph @a57se @tsjc68 @juunit  One of the reasons I so liked our mini-camp invitee DJ Harper?

He had 10.25" hands.

Really wish we would have brought him to camp.  Maybe there's still a chance....

@a57se @tsjc68@juunit

What are the odds we can get Kawhi Leonard.  He wouldn't drop anything.  6'7" with 11.3" hands.  Sounds promising.

@tsjc68 @juunit

interesting that Hills' hands measured 9 and 3/8ths at the combine......

Beckham has 10" hands and cooks was 9 and 5/8ths if I remember correctly.....

According to Benjamin Disreali there are 3 types of lies "Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics". Hill still sucks, your stats fail to explain why Hill can't catch a cold.

@gbrownn

The knee issues occurred since he's been with the Jets......there were no physical concerns with him coming out of college that I recall.......

gbrownn

@a57se So we traded up for a guy with painfully minimal college production and knew he may be susceptible to knee issues in the future? We really knocked that pick out the park.

His 60 was fine, and his 3 cone was actually above average. Plus, those are drills that reverse correlate to height... Some quick querying on my database:

count: 103

average 4.26

stddev: 0.14

Meaning that among 6'3"+ WRs (of which, I have recorded 103 20-yard-shuttle times), there's an average of 4.26, with a standard deviation of .14.

Compared to the inverse (6'3 and shorter WRs)...

count: 363

average: 4.19

stddev: 0.15

When running the numbers for 6'4 and above, you get 4.29 and .12, and for WRs 5'10" and below, it's 4.15 and .18.

Point being, there's a measurable disadvantage in this event for taller dudes. Don't hold that against him.

@gbrownn

The trainers told him he needed to strengthen the muscles around his knees so we'll see.......sounds like the kid just wasn't physically ready for the NFL to me.....

gbrownn

@a57se Growing an inch probably wasn't the best thing for his knees though. Tall guys and bad knees usually is a recipe for a lot of knee scopes.

I believe you mean shuttle. Though it would be funny to see draftees doing the truffle shuffle.

Someone was trying to say that his knees are like an old mans last fall....i don't remember who it was.

@bradysucks  You never liked Hill? You're always speaking so highly of him.

Bent,

Great comment! So true.

I never liked Hill but the areas he excels at are his leaping ability & straight ahead speed where he was dominant at the combine. It is truly mystifying that the Jets almost never throw him jump balls. The QB's are either unaware of Hill's strengths or have no confidence in him

At the combine he was terrible in the 20 yard shuffle and 60 yard shuffle - drills that involve stopping and starting and cutting

gbrownn
gbrownn

@Bent Theres a reason we never threw it up to him. QB's and coaches dont trust him to come down with it!  The fact that he grew an inch is pretty cool though not gonna lie. You don't hear that much.

@williamg1 @Marcus Armstrong  Great, now he'll have even more chance of catching those high balls we never throw to him.
