Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson signs two-year deal with Jets

Running back Chris Johnson will sign a two-year deal with the Jets (Schefter, April 16).

Update – 4:36 p.m.: Johnon’s deal has a base value of $8 million, with $1 million in available incentives (PFT, April 16).

The 28-year-old is a three time pro-bowler (albeit not since 2010) and has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his six seasons in the NFL and has been among the most durable running backs in the league, starting 116 games in each of the last five seasons.

He has 50 rushing touchdowns and eight receiving touchdowns in his career. He had a 4.6 yards per carry over his career, but that dipped to 3.9 YPC last season.

Johnson has almost 10,000 yards from scrimmage in his career.

He will join Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory in the backfield. This likely signals the end of Mike Goodson’s tenure with the Jets, coupled with his ongoing legal troubles.

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

What’s impressive about Johnson is that he’s a legitimate three-down back in an era where that’s a dying breed. Not only has Johnson not missed a game in five years, he’s also been in the top six for total snaps by a running back in each of the last four seasons. He therefore has a lot of experience on passing downs, both as a blocker (has stayed in to block 99 times on average in each of the past three seasons) and as a pass catcher (272 career receptions). >> Read more from Bent here…

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

According to Football Outsiders, over the last five years the Tennessee Titans have never had a offensive line that ranked above the 19th spot in run-blocking, many times ranking among the league’s very worst units.  While the Jets offensive line is a unit in flux, it’s hard not to think that just by placing him behind the Jets line he’ll see an increase in effectiveness.  While the Jets are clearly paying Johnson more than they did Chris Ivory a year ago, the Jets will likely employ C&C (Touchdown Factory?) in a shared role.  Ivory has proven to be a punishing runner between the tackles and Johnson gives the Jets a more dynamic every down runner than Bilal Powell.

After all is said and done in fa IMO izzy did a nice job. I like what cj is saying about a chip on his shoulder. If he can come in and do what lt did a few years ago and be a leader/ good citizen it's huge. The draft possibilities seem limitless. Can't wait

CJ2K- I just hope that CJ can still run, the past few years he's looked a bit slow

Haven't the Jets made the playoffs while Brady and Belicheat have been in New England, what kind of rock do you live under Joey Stiger, how about thinking before you speak

Joey Stiger

The Jets can sign whoever they want but they will never make the playoffs as long as Brady or Belichick are in New England.

Pretty sure Idzik did Rice a solid. Drove the Seahawks to make a move. HE wasn't making this roster.

We will get our guy at 18

@Brendan Man that's a good deal for us!! (responding to salary breakdown) I'm enthused, and better yet the draft is just around the corner!

The blues are now dissipating...  :)

@Brendan

RBs don't really have a learning curve, (so no need to look to the future) and we have 4 on the roster. Whats the earliest you'd draft one if at all.

I wouldnt touch one until the 5th at the earliest.
(But I would draft one )

@Marvel  Rice did us all a solid by not signing with us. He's not good.

@kniff

@Marvel  I'd take a good one in the 4th if someone dropped.

@Brendan @Montywell if hes trying to insult people for thier opinion.on the internet .then he is a best a coward, at worst sadly pathetic and unimaginative.

Marvel you seem to always find a reason to flip

Jets have lot of holes to fill but if he is there in the end of the 4th round i wouldn't mind seeing them take a chance on Tajh Boyd

@Marvel @kniffI'm liking a third round pic in case Geno is not the answer... Vic is not the future, and apparently I'm the lone Simms fan out here/there, so I like an "iron in the fire" at the position at all times til we strike gold...

and then I STILL want an iron in the fire at all times...cause you never know....

any given Sunday...

@Marvel @Hazard2012

I think we all want a Sproles type of scat back that we haven't had since Leon Washington.  Idzik has positioned the Jets nicely so that he can be patient and wait for somebody to drop and maybe get a bargain in the late fourth or fifth round.

True, but Goodson's legal problems could take him out of the picture, regardless, and the Jets carried four RB's last season and may choose to do so again.

@Hazard2012

 don't get me wrong, I'd love to add Freeman or DAT , but management is basically saying bye to Powell or Goodson at that point imo.

I HAVE no problem letting go of either . But if management likes them  the value in a 4th round RB may not warrant a pick.

@Brendan @Marvel

I think Goodson fits what MM likes to do better than Powell.

But I don't think Idzik would hesitate to get rid of either of them if he drafted somebody young that MM gives two thumbs up to.

@Marvel @Brendan

Think it would be hard to pass on a Sims, Freeman, Sankey or Seastrunk in the 4th round if they're there...which is likely for most of them. Talent drops off significantly in the 5th.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marvel I've already stated I'm cool getting rid of Powell, I don't think he's anything special.

I think Goodson could be really good on this team, but if he's cut it's not a big deal, either. Competition, baby, and there are a lot of RB's in this draft that intrigue me.

Marvel
Marvel

@Brendan

 hmm. I wanna agree but aren't you betting against Powell /goodson at that value.

4Th Rounders play in my book.

@williamg1

 Can't blame him for making a career off one season... Matt Flynn made his off one game

:-)

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1  I don't know. If you remove his Brett Favre season from his career, he's had only one season where he had more than 500 yards. Sure, he's been injured, but even if project his production over 16 games, and he still doesn't come close to 1,000.

@joemustgo @boomeryeah at this point we can just chill until the draft. We dont need to sign any rice's.Who knows what the draft has to offer. I want to leave space on the roster for hill. Hill could have a big year this year.. especially with CJ in the fold.
