Corner Darrin Walls sits out Tuesday practice

Cornerback Darrin Walls did not practice with the team on Tuesday due to a “minor” injury and won’t play in the final preseason game this Thursday against the Eagles. (NJ.com, August 26)

Coach Rex Ryan sounded unconcerned, saying that Walls had a minor leg injury that won’t impact his availability for for the Sept. 7 season home opener against the Oakland Raiders.

“He’s fine,” Ryan told reporters Tuesday.

Fourth on the depth chart a month ago, Walls has been thrust into an expanded role with injuries to Dee Milliner, Dexter McDougle and Antonio Allen.

In Walls place, corners Ellis Lankster and LeQuan Lewis will see extended time as the team’s preseason Week 4 starters.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Walls played significant time in last week’s matchup against the Giants, starting opposite Antonio Allen who left early with a concussion. It is good to hear that Walls availability for the first week of the season is not affected, but we can only hope that the Jets will get healthy, and in the case of Patterson, get their minds right for the start of the regular season.

Protect those beautiful hands Darrin.

He has done well though when called upon.

Now people are questioning if Josh Shaw really did hurt himself trying to save his nephew?

Man, what is the world coming to? Can't even be a hero without people calling you a liar.

Not for nothing, but those radio spots for Jets tickets are pretty weak. They're worse than those equally inauthentic Subaru "narrative" commercials.

OK, I get it. CB for the NYJ is the new drummer for Spinal Tap, or keyboard player for the Dead. We need some voo-doo to break the curse...Bob, any koans or other ideas that might help here?

Man these quality cbs from team cuts are flying off the board! We got walls and lankster though. No regrets!!

@juunit Goodell is busy preparing his suspension when he enters the NFL.

I want to see a video of Idzik holding his thumb sideways, as the rest of the team chants either up or down.

I kind see it this way Stan. The defense by week 2 or 3 the backfeild should be back together.. Ok so their young however tallented. should be ok.

And as for the offense as of each week that goes by in the season the arrows pointing up for them the offense is only gonna get better and better.

@Brendan Perhaps not the best sign for hopes of a full recovery from Antwan.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan Haha.

I'm betting he's either trying to trade him, or wait until the right moment to cut him. The right moment: when a decent CB gets cut, just to add to the pool, so as to better our chances of getting that CB.

@a57se @joemustgo Yup. Not at all convinced that the narrator has been anywhere near Shea or Met Life, let alone attended a game. At least describe a real game   from our history rather than some fictional Jets game.

@bob @Stanley Bostitch I like that they are young and will grow. And I think as the young kids play we'll see which ones are good enough to hang, all the while being helped out by good safeties and a solid front seven. And, if and when some don't grow as expected, we can upgrade. I see this a little like the 2009 WR crew, when Cotchery was the only somewhat sure thing, with Stuckey, Clowney, Marcus Henry, Britt Davis. Didn't work out so we traded for Bray in October and went to the AFC CG.

Everyone saying that we can find a quality cb when teams make their cuts. It was extreme sarcasm.

Well Saunders tried pulling a power play  and Idzik just wasnt having any of it. Which leads me to believe that he has some confidense with the guys who are here. I got a feeling the back upps are gonna grow up quick and do fine.

@j3tsfan29 Is the part where you (again) ignore the existence of Dee Milliner part of the sarcasm, too?

My sources say the Patterson mess have been misreported. Patterson thought his contract was for 1 year at $3M. Considering he only plays 3 or 4 games a year, he felt cheated when he found out he was going to start in the preseason game, plus 16 regular season games. That's why he went AWOL.

j3tsfan29

Dude get over milliner, I'm not hating on milliner. He's great he's a lockdown he's the next revis. I'm with you as far as milliner. Stop with milliner already. Were talking lankster and walls.

Brendan
Brendan

@j3tsfan29 When you say "Lankster and Walls!!" in mocking tones, it comes off as you implying they're the starters. If they do start, it's for a week. And if they do start, they're not the worst CB tandem in the league, so let's pump the brakes.

And as for the cutdowns - there are some intriguing names out there that could potentially improve depth.

You really should wait and see before committing to the "this is a disaster" camp.

Brendan
Brendan

@UncleJoesJetFarm You're going to try and take away from Dee's performance against the Browns? Realllllllllly? Because of the QB?

News flash for Joseph: I could have been their QB, that's still impressive, because the guy being covered was the best WR in the NFL last year.

j3tsfan29
j3tsfan29

Well here's the thing. Milliner mans cb1 spot, between walls/lankster/Patterson cb2 will have to be manned and I don't think a single one of them is up to the challenge. Also its only a matter of time till Wilson has to e replaced. Because of our depth at cb though I think they will start more then 1 week. One of them has to. While intriguing prospects may come available I doubt they are any better then the players we have now! The only position that is a disaster is cb. Everywhere else were good to go IMO. Cb is a disaster and will be. Unfortunately.

Brendan

@j3tsfan29 You don't think Walls, highlighted by PFF as having an exceptional preseason, and having experience playing with the 1's last year, has no shot of being up to the challenge?

Oberyn1

@UncleJoesJetFarm

Dee played exceptional covering the likes of Mike Wallace and Josh Gordon. Obviously we can't say he's a lockdown corner yet but it's clear he turned a corner in December. Not too mention he looked great the first preseason game.

Brendan
Brendan

@UncleJoesJetFarm Please stop pretending that the Browns offense is not notable when, again, they had the best WR in football. He had nearly 1700 yards with derpy mcpoopypants throwing passes to him. Holding him to a mediocre-at-best day is a huge feather in the cap for Dee.

j3tsfan29
j3tsfan29

No I don't. Otherwise Rex would have kept him out on the feild last yr instead of replacing him with the guy he benched not once not twice but three times. Walls should have cracked the starting spot already if he was that dependable. Imo

Brendan
Brendan

@j3tsfan29 Rex would have kept his UDFA on the field over his top-10 pick?

If they sidelined Cro for any length of time, Walls would've been the starter. It's not like the team doesn't trust him, he wouldn't have gotten those reps with the 1's if that were the case. They just had a plan for the long-term and Dee was in it, Walls wasn't necessarily going to be a part of it.

I hate the "he didn't start before, so he can't start now!" argument. The Jets have had Revis, Cro and Milliner (a top-10 pick) as their starters under Rex. It's not a knock against any of these guys for not cracking the starting lineup.

Wouldn't say i'm drinking the kool-aid. It's pretty much fact per the eye test and PFF that he played very well in December.

Brendan

@UncleJoesJetFarm Which is fine, and fair, but when you tie it to comments that try to ignore or take away from exceptional play, that's where you lose us.

@Oberyn1 @UncleJoesJetFarm

I think his point, though overstated a bit, is fair.

If the final four opponents had been GB, SD, NE and Denver like we face this year early, that would be more impressive.

@a57se

I guess, but given how good he was in December after he looked horrible 75% of the season makes me wonder why we're nitpicking about that.

a57se

@Oberyn1 @a57se

There was also some talk that having reed over the top on defense helped him out quite a bit...

Not sure how much impact that had on his performance.

Oberyn1

@a57se

I've seen people say Reed helped him by mentoring him or something but then other people say Reed was awful last year. Maybe it just clicked for Milliner.

williamg1
williamg1

@Oberyn1 @a57se I think it was a little of both. He had offseason surgery, leading up to the draft, and then had to make the jump to NFL CB from Alabama's system. So he was trying to get healthy, learn the system, and try to keep up with big, strong NFL receivers. After a while, he adjusted and excelled (with some help from Reed). At least that's how I see it.

One thing that is noticeable, is how much bigger Dee's upperbody is this year. He looks like he has the strength to bully dudes at the line (like Revis). I've got high hopes for him
