Cornerbacks Verner and Talib avoid franchise tags

After Brent Grimes agreed to a deal with the Dolphins earlier today, it looks as if four of the other top five ranked free agent corners could be slated to hit free agency a week from tomorrow.

In addition, both Sam Shields and Vontae Davis could also hit free agency as well.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

While we could see the Jets pursuing some safeties this year, the team seems to be trending massively downward at their spending at the cornerback position.  Last year the Jets traded Darrelle Revis and are expected to cut Antonio Cromartie soon in a salary cap move.

With that in mind, it’s hard to say how much the Jets will be interested going above and beyond again in the cornerback market — especially after drafting Dee Milliner in 2013.

Even so, the value of players at the top like Grimes, Verner, Talib, Shields and Davis could drive the market for whatever price the Jets would offer Antonio Cromartie to come back should they decide to cut and re-sign the Jets veteran.

I was high on Verner, but after hearing his statement regarding not taking a hometown discount, I want him to be a jet even more. He has stated he is not looking for 10 to 11 million a year but wants a offer that's respectful. I have no problem paying the dude 8M per year. After signing Howard, Verner should be a top priority. No to Byrd, if he is rejecting 10M per year I'd rather pass.

Cro  is the dictionary picture of inconsistent.  He'll make the great play, or give up six.   With Miliner ending the season on an up note, having both out there still makes the secondary a bit shaky.  Hoping Miliner continues his growth, while hopefully Cro signs for the hometown, declining skill  discount.

Or....as a kickoff returner.  : )

I'd like Davis opposite Miliner,Talib is nearing 30 and doesn't play a full season,Grimes at 30 doesn't impress and get paid too much. Verner is going to be the top prize and will be bought for top dollar, can you say Revis?

Give me Davis and bring back Walls and Berry.

Maclin and Boldin deals set this years top of the market at 5.5/6.0 m..

Now how desperate are WR needy teams and how much more will they be willing to spend or will the market stay set ?

There is no question in my mind if these players hit free agency, the Jets will sign one of them. They absolutely will not go into the 2014 with the same corners as the unit. Cro may be back at a reduced rate but they are definitely adding a top guy

In no particular order:

Hakeem Nicks

Austin Howard

Garrett Graham

Asomoah/Beadles/Schwartz

The Pats went 12-4 without Revis and will continue to win as long as they have Brady, so why would a frugal team pop for a player who is never satisfied with his contract? Sorry, but this is just more kindling in the off season bonfire of bogus rumors.

Idzik better leak a story... soon lol

don't know if it's true Pats are thinking about acquiring Revis, but Pats are in the same boat as the Jets, they need receivers, they over achieved with what they had, but they can't count on receivers that green in big games, Jets where still beatable with Revis, and Pats will have to pay what Revis wants.

New Plan now that Orakpo was Tagged

Cut Cromartie, Holmes, Sanchez- should give the Jets about 50 million to spend

S- Byrd: 10mil

CB- Shields, Verner, Davis, or Talib: 7-9mil

WR- Tate: 7-8mil

OT- Howard: 5-7mil

G- One of the KC Guards: 4mil

WR- Andre Roberts: 2-4mil

This would be a solid Free Agency with a range of 35-42 Million Spent out of the projected 50 million to spend.

Too bad the daily story isn't about WRs that aren't being tagged.  That's still the no. 1 area of need and the area where immediate veteran help is necessary.

I like idzik and Rex combo there not going to pay big bucks for quality players and there going to draft the best guys available. There's no guarantee we're going big on offense early just because and I like that

@johnnyl65  Grimes signed long term already anyway ... but he's a very good player.

@johnnyl65 i actually was excited to have aaron berry and i hope he fully recovers.   We will see what happens though.   Idzik is tough to read, will he make a spalsh in FA?  So many scenarios.  What if Denard falls to 18?

Bent

@johnnyl65  I highly doubt that's the top of the market, Johnny.

Boldin did get 6m per year, but he's getting pretty old and $9m was guaranteed (75%) so that they can release him if he shows signs of aging this year (and we know from Derrick Mason how fast that can happen for a wideout).

Maclin was lucky to get that much coming off a serious injury and I expect there are incentives involved.

I still think the second tier could get $6-8m and Decker's going to be somewhere around $10m.  If I'm wrong and Decker could be had for $7m as you suggest then that's certainly more palatable.

@johnnyl65

I think Decker will set the top of the market and I hope it isn't with us.

@frustjetfn  Unless the Pats realize that their window (Brady's career) is closing.

@Marvel  It's remarkable how little the beat writers get. And by remarkable I mean wonderful.

levi

@marcus81  It doesnt really fit their style to go after high priced players like Revis. They would have to give up at least a first and then pay him a ton.

marcus81

@Brad Jerris only Howard, Tate and another O lineman for FA's, can't tie up too much money, that's what Tanny did before he left.

Marvel

@Brad Jerris

Tate isn't worth anywhere near that especially not on this team.

@SackDance99  Only one wide receiver was tagged and that's Jimmy Graham.

Ill take both. Talib CRo on a reduced contract and Byrd over the top. With our front 7 ooweee! Btw in my opinion talib> CRo this yr last yr and ever.

@lagoo  Last year Talib was better, without question. In 2012, Cro was better, without question.

@a57se @johnnyl65  Say it's 7.0/7.5 m do you feel that's to high of a price?

I actually feel that's a good deal for us. He's big,has sure hands, gets open and scores a lot.

@levi @marcus81This is all hoopla to get the JETS nervous about their pick that changes to a 4th.  We will find out though

Sack, you're too knowledgeable to not realize that the trenches must be extremely strong for the skill positions to thrive. Pitching trumps hitting, skills go no where without both lines providing pressure/ time. History has clearly shown this time and time again. If quarterbacks win Super Bowls, why did the Broncos get killed. We need to obsess less about receivers and QB's ( as radical and unfashionable as that sounds ) and collect players who will protect the QB whoever it is, and terrorize theirs. Just look at the books.

@Bent Curious, whats you guys take on that? How should he be classified?

Yea and we all know cro was playing hurt if he's healthy he's one of the best in the league. I just like sheilds youth seeing as our entire d is super young. I think cro stays cus he's a leader that guys look up to

Talib was exposed. Just send your smallest guy on offense on a rub route to knock him out

I'll take Sam shields over either one

@johnnyl65 @a57se

He scores a lot in Denvers pass first, Peyton Manning led offense..... that doesn't necessarily translate to a geno Smith led offense.

Why would he choose the Jets over other possible destinations where the QB position is more secure and desirable?

Just sayin'.....

johnnyl65
johnnyl65

@Bent @levi  He is, was and will be classified a TE until he is a UFA anything else is an unjust decision regardless of how much he plays lined up in the slot or wide. The fair thing would be to make him play as a TE until a ufa then if he chooses he can make his demands to interested teams that he expects to be paid and classified as a TE.

levi
levi

@Bent Goes to show you how much these hybrid players are changing the game.

Nick Folk, Wide out kicker extraordinaire.

Bent
Bent moderator

@levi  Nick Folk should have taken an extra long run up from near the sideline and then filed a grievance because he was lined up out wide.

Bent
Bent moderator

@levi  You can rescind the tag if it hasn't been signed.  If he signed it and then the grievance was upheld I don't know how that would work, but I would assume the league would allow the Saints to back out.  Ultimately I think that would just give Graham more leverage in terms of the long term deal he's hoping for.

It's 12.3m for WRs and 7.0 for TEs.

levi
levi

I didnt realize when a team tags someone its just a generic tag. The league decides what position it is.

levi
levi

@Bent Wow, interesting. Curious how this plays out. If he wins will NO have to tag him or can they back out of it I wonder...I assume the price is much more for a WR.

Brendan
Brendan

@levi    I think he should definitely be classified as a WR.
