Cromartie heading to the Pro Bowl too

Somewhat surprisingly, there’s another Jet headed to the Pro Bowl, joining Nick Mangold:

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

Less than a week ago, Cromartie was admitting what a poor season he’d had and talking about the possibility of being a cap casualty during the offseason. Blighted by a hip injury all season, Cromartie was unable to come anywhere close to replicating his outstanding 2012 season. In a gutsy effort, Cromartie started all 16 games and missed just 34 snaps, but was a liability at times, giving up almost 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in coverage. He did intercept three passes, but it was a disappointing season for the 29-year-old.

Serious question - is Cro the worst tackling CB in the league?  I'm sure there is a metric out there on missed tackles by CB's but I don't believe that number would tell the whole story on Cro's tackling.

His style will fit the Pro Bowl perfectly. Do not press, let them catch the long ball and dont tackle them hard if at all.

If he goes will that give him any extra money? I know some players get bonuses for making it to the Pro Bowl.

Cro is a pretty good corner. at the very least if you throw it Cro's way to many times he will intercept ya...I think Cro can lock down any #2 receiver on any team and some # 1 receivers pending on the match ups.

The honor is real. The game is stupid. The hip is the only priority!

If I'm not mistaken aren't the players the ones that vote on the pro bowl. A survey was taken among current players and when asked "What one player would you build a franchise around" the answer was Peyton Manning. Who would build a franchise around a player that may only play one more year.

So when someone that deserves to go to the pro bowl doesn't or when someone that doesn't deserve to go does, it isn't a disgrace or embarrassing. The whole thing is a joke.

Shouldn't Cro be resting and rehabbing his hip?

The fact that Cro is going and Wilkerson is not is an embarrassment. Different positions? Of course. But of everyone on the Jets defense, who is more deserving than Wilkerson? Def not Cro, not by a longshot. This new Pro-Bowl system is ridiculously stupid.

New names for the Pro Bowl?

The doesn't deserve it bowl.

The media hyped bowl.

The old guy who was once good bowl.

The bowl of oatmeal.

Due to the injury problems he had this year… should he even play now that he was selected? What if the injury gets even worse and takes longer to recover from?

This is one reason nobody cares about the Pro Bowl, it's about reputation instead of performance. Cro makes it, while Keenan Lewis sits home? Of course, the main reason is that the game itself stinks, and I don't think the new fantasy football format will change that. I'd much rather watch a skills competition.

I like Cro... BUT... this is ridiculous after the season he had. Anytime u complain about guys from your team that didn't make the Pro Bowl, it comes off as sour grapes. So maybe by pointing out the insanity of an undeserving player from your team making the Pro Bowl will help show how ridiculous the Pro Bowl selections are

Big Deal. It is not as if he deserves it.

--- There...this fits much better here.

@t__k He had improved dramatically in 2012, but went backwards in 2013 (although if he was hurting then maybe that is understandable to some degree.

Milliner's tackling was pretty bad all year too.

I can give you the metric, but as you say it doesn't always tell the whole story because it doesn't tell you when a player shied away from contact, allowed themselves to be driven for extra yardage or failed to get off a block to put themselves in a position to make the tackle.

Cromartie was only "credited" with five missed tackles which was in the bottom half.  Buster Skrine led the league (CBs only) with 20 and Milliner had nine.

However, it's perhaps better expressed as a percentage of total tackle opportunities.  There Cromartie was 37th out of 79 qualifiers with Milliner #50.  Interestingly, Cromartie was 37th in 2012 too, although his tackle efficiency was higher and he only missed four.

In conclusion, I'd say there's no way he's the worst, but he's certainly not that good.

@levi All the players that attend the Pro Bowl get some kind of game check, plus the free vacation.

I don't think Cro's play deserves this, at all, but the guy played hurt so I won't cry that he got a free vacation. He should pay for Wilkerson to go just out of principle.

The pro bowl has always been stupid, that hasn't changed.

@juunit

Cro is still good - He is just injured and not at 100%. If David Harris can bounce back then so can Cro (who will be a very good CB again  in 2014)

How about toilet bowl

@Bent

It is even more appropriate here but Mangold isn't deserving on this years performance either.

If Jets fans can't realize that there are other Centers who played better than Mangold and are being snubbed because of name recognitiom then they really shouldn't gripe about Wilkerson getting snubbed.

@Bent@t__k Great stuff Bent thanks.  I would put Cro in the "shied away from contact" column.

@Brendan I know they get paid to play but I think sometimes its in their contract that if they make the Pro Bowl they get x amount of dollars, an incentive type deal.

No his play didnt deserve this but it may very well be his last one so he should go and enjoy it. Then heal up and hope he can return to form. I like Cro and didnt mean to bash him but he clearly has his flaws too.

It's like Kobe Bryant telling everyone to vote for Damian Lillard and other young talented players over him because he hasn't played at all and doesn't deserve it THIS season...

@a57se @Bent The point is none of those guys had assignments as tough as Mangold this year.  Oftentimes, a center will snap the ball and pick up the spare man, which means they're just standing there doing nothing.  You don't ever see Mangold in such a role.  There were many occasions where he saved Winters or helped Winters with his initial block before peeling off and he won't get additional credit for that.

Wilkerson graded out worse than last year but Jets fans are correctly able to rationalize that by the fact that he had to deal with more opponents and tougher assignments.  That's true for Mangold too.

If you watched a guy like Brian De La Puente and didn't think Mangold could do his job standing on his head then maybe you're the one who needs perspective.

At the end of the day it's IMPOSSIBLE to compare, but the guy who held his own with a very difficult role deserves credit just like the guy who was more dominant with an easy role.

@t__k @Bent Much like Rhodes before him, who also fared well in terms of tackle efficiency numbers that belied his actual abilities.

Bent

@levi @Brendan I don't believe Cro had any such escalators in his deal.  If he did they'd probably just increase next year's salary which may be moot.

$50k to the winners and $25K to the losers for the Pro Bowl.

@joe11 I see everything that Kobe does which would make you like him a lot more as a person as a cold, calculated action designed purely to convince you that he's a nice person when clearly he's an egotistical jerk.  For me it's been transparent damage control for him since Colorado.

I'm kinda biased though.

Bent
Bent moderator

@joe11 Did he actually do that or are you suggesting how absurd it would be for him to do that?

Certainly in the NBA guys often get in that haven't played.  Magic, Yao Ming etc.
