Cunningham working with starting nickel defense

Jermaine Cunningham has been working with the starting nickel defense at OTAs (Cimini, June 5).

With Antwan Barnes still working back from a knee injury, and possibly out until at least the start of training camp, Cunningham will see more looks with the nickel as a pass rusher (TJB, June 4).

Cunningham appeared, briefly, in two games with the Jets last season. He’s competing with IK Enemkpali and Trevor Reilly for time and roster spots.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Cunningham was a cast off from the Patriots and could be an interesting reclamation project for the Jets.  There will be some competition at the outside linebacking spot behind Calvin Pace, but there’s plenty of opportunity for … dare I say it?  Competition.

Wouldn't troy Davis be in that conversation as well?

Did anyone say "Competition"?

@a57se I don't see him as a pass rush specialist (18.5 sacks in 52 games in college but pretty productive as a tackler).  Realistically he's looking for a ST role.

@jvsvn Yes, two people in the Jets organization said it.  Unfortunately, they pronounced it slightly differently and therefore: CHAOS AT FLORHAM PARK.

@Bent We've both been writing him off... and perhaps we shouldn't.

@Bent @a57se

I am thinking of a Calvin Pace eventual successor conversation........this is more about pass rushing specialist on third downs......Ooop!

WHY ARE TWO DIFFERENT HUMAN BEINGS AFFILIATED WITH THE JETS SAYING TWO SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THINGS ABOUT SOMETHING?!?!?!??! More on this story as it develops.

(And yes, had they say the exact same thing, the story would be "Jets all sticking to party line, obviously have something to hide".)
