(miketaliaferro) Just more "Manny being Manny."

My internal "I Call BS!" meter is slamming into the Red Zone here. This whole "internal Jets" conflicts reporting looks clearly like Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News throwing a tantrum. Or perhaps his job is in jeopardy & he's desperate for a Hail Mary story. Have you noticed that NO other media outlet has any independent corroboration or further details of the lurid tales emanating from Manny's laptop? All you see are outlets picking up his juicy reports verbatim, sometimes with attribution, sometimes not (which must drive him nuts) and passed off as their own. But it's the same info with NO other details than Manny's original story.

Today, Manny follows up yesterday's resulting Great Jet Fan Uproar, which he mostly created, with the story of that Bad Man Idzik treating those poor, honest, hard-working player agents in a less than upfront manner while trying to gain a negotiating advantage. Oh, which other reports HAVE stated are pretty much Standard Operating Procedure for all 32 front ofcs. BUT Idzik's doing it is a dead giveaway that he's a Bad Man & must be run out of town on a third rail. Mike Tannenbaum's Leak Central front office would NEVER do something like that, boy. Oh, and by the way, did you hear that some unnamed person or other claims that Rex is "pissed!" "Livid!" "Frothing at the mouth!" "Tearing up his office!!" "Calling Idzik bad names!" "Declaring that all honeymoon stories from last winter are OVER!!" "Declaring WAR on Idzik until Woody throws Johnny Boy out of the building!!!!" "Ripping his tattoos off with his fingernails, he's sooo mad!" None of which, of course, has been shown to have come from Rex himself, anyone around him, or anyone in the state of New Jersey, including members of the Chris Christie administration. It's all "wink, wink // you can't handle the truth!" stuff, which is Manny's stock in trade.

It appears that Manny is attempting to rebuild a media presence for himself that he lost when Mike ("An anonymous Jet said...") Pettine left NJ to leak to other teams' media & Idzik locked down all media control in NJ. This has forced Manny to follow the (mostly successful) lead of Rick Cimini and other beat writers in actually reporting what happens with the Jets, instead of making up garish stories about the team to boost circulation. Manish has clearly been wandering the halls of Florham Park, badgering anyone, on down to the kid laundering the towels, for a little inside poop on that Bad Man Idzik. And then doing the usual "Mehta alluding" (but not SAYING, mind you) that it somehow comes from Rex, trying to stir up that pot.

I do feel sorry for Mehta. He'd been put in a terrible position, where no one in the organization will talk to him. But riling up the team fan base, just to elbow his way to the front of the press pool is, in a word, ugly. And is, if proven to be true, also unprofessional in the extreme.

I still think WR is the move here, but watched highlights of Pryor and he looks ridiculous.  How are draft experts grading him against top NFL safeties?  He looks like a ball hawk and an absolute stopper tackling.  I'm sure the NFL would throw some flags his way, but I love the way he plays.

(miketaliaferro) Vlad Ducasse reportedly visits Minnesota after a visit to Cincinnati. My reporting says he eventually signs with Wake Forest.

i think we may all have to just bite the bullet and accept that this season will be about development of young unproven players in addition to Geno and the sophmores. I will go into the season expecting very little of the Jets, which usually works well for me because that is when I get surprised. It can go either way, 1 more win than last season or 1 less. I am confident that Idzik will draft well with all our picks, or potentially trade a few, and add Austin or another mid-level WR and CB still available. I am actually leaning toward 9-7 /10-6 with, and only with, a solid draft and minor player additions. use our cap space to lock up Mo, Coples, Snacks, Kerley and Allen next summer.

I hope this has been said already, but what happened to never linking to PFT?

Ryan Clark is about to turn 35 yrs. old, so we will probably sign him.

Phil Jackson will be "in charge of all basketball decisions." #knicks

Hmmm good or bad?

(mentioned this in a lower comment was hoping for more traction) Johnathan Joseph is an intriguing name, got injured in week 15 gonna be 30. Has a 10 million dollar cap hit and the texans might want to get younger. I believe hes a very highly rated corner before the injury

"Jets are not in "all-in" mode or rebuilding mode. They're in between: In the NFL, that's called "win now" mode."

What does Manish mean by this? I don't quite understand...

@nyijkm(miketaliaferro) This is the sane way to go. Remember last year! We were, maybe, a consensus 4-12 team (if we were lucky) with the talent pool Tanny left Idzik. Rex did the coaching job of his LIFE just to get us up to .500. That was right out of "Hoosiers"! A 10-6 team this year would be lovely.

@__fense  It was Florio specifically (and the above article is MDS), but yeah that rule gets broken from time to time.

@eric88 (miketaliaferro) Remember, the FA period is The Land of Broken Toys yard sale. Every player has been tossed aside by somebody -- at least once. It's where you pour over the tables, looking for that one "still has value" score. You don't look to furnish your house there. The Draft is FAO Schwartz' shiny, new toy store.

Good...can't get any worse around here.

@greggreen  Would be awesome, but I doubt he's cut. The 10 million dollar hit seems fair.

@greggreen  I like JJ. Im sure we would take a look if hes available.

@Mike Milea  don't try to understand or rationalize that which cannot be understood or rationalized. ESPECIALLY when it comes from manish, who is the epitome of illogical thought and otherwise a troll/hack.

@Mike Milea  He's defining NFL strategic modes now.  Sounds like he's getting ideas above his station.

@bonozoffa  I actually stopped watching NBA a few years ago. Im not into it enough to blog about often I just thought this was interesting and I know many folks here are fans.

@juunit @levi

yeah, there is sure to be a huge learning curve for him, right?

levi

@harold Thats what I was thinking. Im sure thats the only way Phil would join the team in the first place.

@levi @greggreen

Yeah, the Texans signed him and Daneal Manning instead of chasing Nnamdi like we did in 2011.....

@levi @greggreen  Great player.  Seems like a pipe dream that he'd be available but if he was I'd be all over that.

@levi me too. not a fan, either. my comment was made partly in jest.

@Bent @a57se@juunit@levi(miketaliaferro) It'll be nice if Phil can work a miracle with that team. Then, my Nets can have the worthy rivalry playmate all the media slathered over before this current season began.

@Hanknaples  He also nailed Jeanie Buss so thats gotta account for something. I remember her in Playboy.

You should read about Jacksons methods...they might surprise you.

@juunit Another thing to look at is Phil probably knows what players he would like but thats not necessarily gonna be a fit for what the Coach will want.

@Bent @a57se @juunit @levi     I'd rather Phil Jackson who has had all of the success that he's had,  making decisions,  than just about any other person in the NBA.   He only knows about winning and I don't think he's going to put up with losing for long.

I think he will be able to attract better free agents than Steve Mills or Grunwald could.

a57se
a57se

@juunit @a57se@levi

He is making the BASKETBALL decisions, not paying the janitors or hiring the caterers.......

I am sure at 22 you know everything there is to know about the business world and how people get promoted and what they learn or know before they get hired.........thanks for the insight.

In this CASE AGE does make a difference.

@a57se @Bent @juunit @levi  It's a nice job to have.  You've got a major competitive advantage on two fronts:

1. An owner that doesn't care about paying luxury tax

2. Everyone wants to play here

...and they're spiritually at rock bottom, but not actually that far from being competitive, so it's kind of a no-lose situation.  He'll get them from mess to relevant soon enough but then will he be in it for the long haul or will he worry about damaging his legacy if he can't guide the Knicks to being a contender?

juunit
juunit

@a57se @juunit@levi

Being involved does not equal doing. I've eaten lots of pizza in my life. Does that mean I can make one?

And the hilarious part is you calling me naive. When you claim to be this wise old man, then spit in the face of the value of actual experience, it's not just naive but hypocritical. Coaching does not equal being president. One is telling athletes how to play, the other is running an actual business with profit and loss, taxes and laws.

As a coach he was given a team and told to get the best out of them. As the head of the front office, his job is to build a team and give it to someone else. Those are completely different jobs. If you can't see that, I really can't help you.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se@juunit@levi

That is a fair point and I am surprised he decided to take the job as I always thought of him as a frontrunner.......he'll have his opportunity to show what he can do with a mess.

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @juunit @levi  And he pretty much always had the best roster in the league by a mile - and left jobs as soon as he didn't.

He has a good idea of what a great roster looks like but does he know how to assemble one with - let's face it - limited assets in the short term?

a57se
a57se

@juunit @a57se@levi

The part where you are being, naive, is to think he hasn't been involved in the day to day when he was in Chicago or LA.......he know what the front office does and how to work there.

When you've been in a business for 40 years you learn unless you just have no desire.

They say it takes about 10,000 hours to become an expert at something, Phil jackson has more time than that doing it.

juunit
juunit

@a57se @juunit@levi

Right, because playing and coaching are the same as running a business. Michael Jordan was a great president. Ted Williams was a great manager. How silly of me.

a57se
a57se

@juunit @a57se@levi

yeah, he has only been around the game for 40 years but he has no clue about how the front office runs....OK.

@Bent @levi @greggreen  gotta hop for something. Still early but i hope we do more then just resign cro and hope for the best
