Tebow was a distraction and by all indications he's not a sociopath. Why are the Jets considering Vick? This team.

Keith McGill at 6'3" ran a 4.47 40...nice time for a big corner.

Lucheiz Purefoy ran a 4.55

trolling for good jets news seems harder this year than at this time of year in previous years

Can someone still me why we are wasting this much space on Vick?

Disgruntled Jets Fan

@idothis2  Disagree entirely.  What's the problem?  We have plenty of cap room, lots of draft picks, and plenty of justified optimism.  Heck, even our trainers saved some dude on an airplane.

a57se

@harold

Because a few people keep insisting on trying to convince others that Vick is some great mentor and would somehow insure great QB play this season.

@Brendan @Jeff E. GuyAnd, Tebow's situation is nothing like Vick's.  Vick has detractors, but not a national media following and fanbase that trail his every move.  It's getting lazy to just say that every player with notoriety is "Tebow" and will bring a "circus."  I don't think ESPN sets up permanent residence in Cortland to track Vick's every move.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @idothis2 i guess the news just seems redundant or maybe time isnt passing fast enough for me.

harold

We have F/A in a couple weeks with 50 million in likely cap space.  I am much more excited about those options that will help make us a championship team then Vick, No Vick.

@a57se @harold  and would somehow insure great QB play this season.

Not great play,  but definitely improved play.

I like how people who think Vick is such a bad idea have no other solutions to finding a veteran backup.  Drafting another rookie to join Simms is not good enough this year as a backup to Geno.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Incorrect.

The reason people are discussing this is because it's a very real possibility the team signs him.

Brendan
Brendan

@SackDance99 Yup. Ring me the next time ESPN throws Vick a birthday party, or has the entire network take after Skip Bayless and issue marching orders to shove Vick into any and every discussion.

@idothis2  Part of that may have to do with the draft being pushed back.

idothis2
idothis2

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @idothis2 the conjecture from the Combine has me thinking that this will be the greatest draft class of all time. the jets have been linked to at least 30 players so i guess i will definitely get the player i covet

@a57se @bklyndude@Brendan I would take McCown in a heartbeat to back up Geno, he could step in and do a great job and maybe salvage a season . there's a reason he's 34 and still in the league. If Geno got hurt, or worse, really stunk out the joint, Josh would be a good choice to get us through the year. And Vick too if he wasn't so injury prone.    With a few new weapons McCown, and Vick would be great in this offense should Geno falter. forget Simms, if his name was Jones he be in arena football by now

@a57se @bklyndude@haroldEarl Morrall?  Don Strock?  And, why is the SB the bench mark?  How about leading the team to the playoffs, or stepping in to win a key game?

@a57se @idothis2 5th sounds good. i wouldnt even mind the 4th since he can provide value as a runner

a57se
a57se

@idothis2 I would think he wouldn't last past the 5th round.....

idothis2
idothis2

@a57se @idothis2 i wouldnt mind Thomas as a late round pick. he could serve as the wildcat qb

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Well if we draft a guy like Thomas, I don't think we'd be able to practice squad him.....Savage or Matthews would have a better chance but there is risk involved.

Brendan
Brendan

@idothis2  I think he gets closer to $5 million, but if he's accepting a deal that pays him $3 million it's a no brainer, in my mind.

idothis2
idothis2

@Brendan @idothis2 Mine too. I'm not sure he Hill will get more than 2.5-3mil. i think that would be a good backup budget with geno's modest contract

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Why can't the team put a young QB on the practice squad, have Simms on the roster and have a veteran be the suited-up #2? That satisfies both of our desires, no?

bklyndude
bklyndude

@a57se @idothis2  Well at least he's a veteran capable of playing better than another rookie.

Geno and Simms just don't have enough experience between them.  I'm not sure how this isn't obvious to fans.  Thankfully the front office is exploring the acquisition of a veteran.

@idothis2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiZim208nMg

The guy flashes BIG time ability. He is just terribly inconsistent. He needs a year or two of top shelf coaching on his mechanics. The TALENT is clearly there.

I think Lee might be the right guy to work with him.....

idothis2
idothis2

@a57se @idothis2 i've been seeing a lot lately that ppl are strongly suggesting that Logan Thomas should convert to TE

a57se
a57se

@idothis2

Even if Hill is available, I would still hesitate.

I think we are building for the future right now while trying to be competitive.  I would prefer a developmental guy behind SImms. I mentioned a few before but I would also look at Logan Thomas as well in the draft.

This way we have two chances behind Geno......

Brendan
Brendan

@idothis2  He could be expensive, but he's my favorite backup option.

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude @a57se@Brendan

Me either, that's why I want to draft a third QB. Vick could easily go down in the preseason.....McCown sucked most of his career and had one good stretch last year with an awesome supporting cast.

I don't want them.

The only QB possibility I would look at and consider is Shaun Hill but he is probably staying in Detroit.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@a57se @bklyndude @Brendan  Simms was only the number two because we went through a number of bad veterans and eventually re-signed Garrard.   I don't wish to have to do that again this season.

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude @a57se@Brendan

Hate to tell you this but Simms was the number two all last season. I trust the coaches on that one.

If Geno gets hurt early in the season, the season is done even with a veteran back-up. I am not holding out any delusions about winning a Super Bowl in 2014.

I am looking forward to seeing the young guys improve and what any rookies we draft can bring to the table.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@a57se @bklyndude @Brendan  I like Simms as a number three until he gets more game experience.

But if Geno gets hurt early in the season, we are probably screwed w/o a veteran QB.  It's the most important position on the team to be this cavalier.

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude @a57se@Brendan

Simms has a year in MM's system and is the primary back-up. He played no worse than Geno when he got in last season. With another offseason in the program he should improve as well. So it is not a rookie with no experience backing up Geno.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@a57se @Brendan  This is a real head scratcher.......

You would rather a rookie with zero experience with MM's system than Vick who has experience with his system.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se So why even have a backup?

Your logic is infallible.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

The point is that the guy was drafted by the team and brought along in their system.....

This was also almost 30 years ago......if your back-up is playing, your not going anywhere anyway. I'd rather have a young guy getting experience......

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se He was a veteran back-up in his late 20's (he was 29). Great point.

a57se
a57se

@bklyndude @a57se@harold

Hoistettler was drafted BY THE GIANTS and was Simms back-up for five years when he won the SB in place of an injured SImms.

HE WAS NOT a VETERAN back-up in his mid 30's.

@Pat d who cares what the headlines would be. the media tried to destroy the jets last year before the season and had to eat a little crow.

Pat d

I agree Harold, I can see the headlines now-the Jets where QBs go to die.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se You're welcome to actually prove these things.

But instead of talking about the Jets, we're talking about me again. Don't you ever get tired of talking about me? Even I do, and I actually like me.

idothis2
idothis2

@harold the last few years were difficult with the negative national coverage, but idzik seems to have a good approach to dealing with the media. i'm not too concerned going forward with the media portrayal if Idzik decides to bring Vick on.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Questioning a single report =/= questioning a person's credibility.

Rapoport is a Mets fans, we stick together.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Also untrue. Rappaport is Schefter Lite. He's not quite as good, he does have some misses, but he's good.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  No, the reason he shut down the circus is he didn't entertain the nonsense from the media. He answers a question once, if they ask it again he just doesn't respond. He didn't enable them the way Tanny did.

I've said this a few times today, but it's way down the page so I will repeat it: I don't want Vick. At all. But I see it's possible and understand why the team would do it. I'm not going to get really upset over it, and I also don't think it kills the season before it starts or anything like that.

And I am looking at him as a backup, not a starter, which might be something we're differing on.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

" No, I do not shred NJ.com to pieces. In fact, a few weeks ago I said they're the best Jets reporters on the beat. "

The root of the story comes from Ian Rappaport, the same guy you TOASTED a month or two ago when the story about Rex' extension was being discussed.

Now he says something you agree with and he is a reliable source.

harold
harold

The reason he shut down the circus was he did not invite the clowns.

Signing Vick is inviting the clowns.

I liked Vick as a exciting player.  But is is no longer a clear upgrade, he just muddies the waters.

We don't need him.  He doesn't bring enough to warrant even occasionally media scrutiny

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

@harold  I'll say this though:  I don't think signing Vick is equivalent, or even close.  I really don't think he'll get that much attention once the dust settles.  Still don't want him though.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  Were you watching last year, at all? Idzik shut down the circus.

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

@harold  That day way was actually when I started commenting on TJB.  I was a lurker for years, but that just really annoyed me.  Thus the "DIsgruntled" tag.

harold
harold

Intent and what happens are different.

The media has made this a big deal already.  Why would we make it a bigger deal and actually sign him?

harold
harold

I said it before and after,  2012 was done the moment we made that trade.

And the CIRCUS had made it's way to town!

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  They wouldn't be bringing him in for media attention, not sure why that's you thinking.

harold
harold

I think Idzik would only go after Vick if he were a position player.  I think QB is too high profile to bring in a marginal NFL starter to stir up media attention

Brendan
