The PFT article:

He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” Mornhinweg told ESPN.

That statement is, frankly, ridiculous, based on what Johnson has accomplished so far.

Um, Mr. Smith, I don't think he was just saying it based on what Johnson has accomplished "so far".  That would be ridiculous, sure.  I highly doubt that Marty Mornhinweg really meant that if Chris Johnson retired tomorrow that he'd be a shoo-in for Canton, but more that he was saying that he's on-track to be a first ballot HoF, and given that CJ2K's first six seasons in the league have given him 9,968 yards from scrimmage, which is good for 10th best EVER, and the other guys guys who occupy #1-#11 are, in order, LaDanian Tomlinson, Eric Dickerson, Emmitt Smith, Thurman Thomas, Marshall Faulk, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson, Edgerrin James, Walter Payton, and Curtis Martin, I can kinda see why Marty Mornhinweg would claim that CJ2K's first six seasons stack up with the best of the best in league history.

Johnson has 7,965 rushing yards in his career, which is nowhere near enough to merit Hall of Fame consideration. (Jerome Bettis has almost 6,000 more yards than Johnson and has been voted down by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee.)

Yes, and Jerome Bettis played 13 seasons.  Chris Johnson has only played six.  A guy who played in 13 seasons having 6,000 more yards than a guy who played in six shouldn't really be a thing that surprises you, Mr. Smith.  Nor is it a fair comp.

in Jerome Bettis's first six seasons, he had 8,337 yards from scrimmage, and 37 TDs.  CJ2K had 9,968 and 58 TDs.

So, yeah.

Football season feels so far yet so close. When does training camp start already. Doesn't preseason start next month

We go as far as our O-Line takes us. #Tank

@tsjc68 Interesting. I think the number of carries should be included in this though. Maybe he just had a bad year but CJ seems to be in decline already. I dont believe he makes it 13 years in the league like Bettis.

@UncleJoesJetFarm Why would you care what other people think? You already have your predetermined opinion and constantly try to convince others to think the same way you do.

@levi @tsjc68

Since you asked:

Bettis, first six seasons:

1935 touches (1807 rushing, 128 rec), 8,337 total yards (7,372 rush, 965 rec), 4.1 ypc, 7.5 ypr

Johnson, first six seasons:

2014 touches (1742 rushing, 272 rec), 9,968 total yards (7,965 rush, 2,003 rec), 4.6 ypc, 7.4 ypr

@levi @tsjc68 In Tennessee he was their work horse, he carried almost every time and was used as a receiving threat, I don't think he is declining, perhaps at this stage in his career it certainly is taking it's tole on him, but considering most teams have 2 or 3 backs that split carriers, you can see why his production has gone down, In NY he will split those carries with Ivory and Powell.  He will be fresh throughout the year and we will see a much rejuvinated Chris Johnson. I think though, he should be used as a change of pace back, with Ivory taking the bulk of the carries only because of his style of running. Ivory can wear on the defense, then you put in Johnson, and I gaurantee he will have alot of long touchdown runs.

Fonzie, which "real" quarterback that was available this offseason would u have liked to have seen the Jets draft or sign? Which QB would save Hill's career that we realistically could've acquired?

tsjc68
tsjc68

@levi @tsjc68

And for reference:

Curtis Martin, first six seasons:

2285 touches (2,010 rushing, 275 rec), 9,776 total yards (7,754 rush, 2,022 rec), 3.9 ypc, 7.4 ypr

levi
levi

@Pablo Bruno  sounds good but Ivory wears on himself with his style of play, how long he can stay healthy taking the bulk of the carries would be a concern.

levi
levi

@UncleJoesJetFarm  Well I do have a bit of a headache but no, I didnt mean to offend. I just dont see the point in it. Training camp hasnt even started yet and we actually can only guess at who will be starting.

Brendan
Brendan

@davem CHAD PENNINGTON. But as part of his contract he'd still have to wear the Dolphins uniform while he played QB for the Jets.

levi
levi

@tsjc68  Cmart is a freaky durable RB though. Im kinda shocked Bettis carried that much and lasted as long as he did because the bigger guys take lots of hits low and I assume that wears them out quicker.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@levi @Pablo Bruno That's when Powell comes in, Ivory and Powell can alternate in those duties as big bruising backs, then you plug in Chris Johnson.

Fair 'nuff Fonz. I thought ur explanation was rational (til the McElroy part, then u kinda lost me)

levi
levi

@Hanknaples  I think the Jets are done with McElroy. Perhaps the Dolphins should get him to improve the bad QB play down there.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples And there it is. I read the entire time wondering when the crazy would show up, and you didn't disappoint.

CJ2K's best comps, IMHO, are Edgerrin James and Marshall Faulk (in that he was a true bell-cow back who caught a lot of passes and basically never left the field and was the focal point of the offense).

So:

Edge, first six seasons:

2140 touches (1828 rushing, 312 rec), 10,222 total yards (7,720 rush, 2,502 rec), 4.2 ypc, 8.0 ypr

Faulk, first six seasons:

2026 touches (1642 rushing, 384 rec), 10,553 total yards (6,701 rush, 3,852 rec), 4.1 ypc, 10.0 ypr

Compared to the HoF backs, CJ2K's workload isn't really all that heavy.  Those guys had worn off more metaphorical tread then he did.

@Pablo Bruno  Do you think CJ is fresher than Tomlinson when we got him?

levi
levi

@tsjc68  He's been very durable. Gotta give him that. Hopefully he has a few good years left.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@levi @Pablo Bruno I think so for sure, Tomlinson was what like plus 30? He was a shadow of his former self then, I think, he certainly was no Curtis Martin when we got him.

@levi @tsjc68 ESPECIALLY the GMac comment.

This was my favorite, though:

This argument is about Hill and the perception he has been underperforming and using the injury history as an excuse so that he can get cut because the jets have enough receivers now to have competition for him so we can see him get squeezed out.

I read that sentence like ten times and still have no idea what he's trying to say, or what subject those verbs and adverbs are referring to, but whatever it is he's saying, it's just dripping with paranoid insanity.

@levi @tsjc68 we got johnson 2 years younger and with 1100 less carries than tomlinson i think johnson is going to work out pretty good for us

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@levi @Pablo Bruno I personally think CJ will be really good atleast for the next 2-3 years before his skills start declining, his loss of production IMO is fatigue not declining skills.

@tsjc68  I just figured this incredible hangover was making it difficult for me to understand.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@rstysanchz @levi @tsjc68

True.

When we added Tomlinson, he had played in 141 games and had 3,410 touches.  Chris Johnson has played in 93 games and has 2,014 touches.

@Pablo Bruno  Im hoping he has tread left on his tires but he has been used heavy.

@tsjc68 if johnsons knee is heeling as good as everyone is reporting he should be fine...if im not mistaken didnt we get tomlinson with a bad ankle
