Breaking News - Idzik just bought a happy meal. The price was right.

In my mind, there are two main possibilities for why D-Jax isn't a Jet right now. The first is that he didn't pass their character checkup and background analysis. I trust their background department, and if they didn't like what they saw after doing some digging, or received bad reviews from Mornhinweg, I can wrap my head around that. What would irritate me is if Idzik didn't sign Jackson because it deviates from his plan, and didn't want to pay up for him. The Jets have the money to pay for him and a gaping hole at the position. From a strictly football perspective, he's a good fit.

I hope that Idzik is not so deeply tied to his "build through the draft" plan that he wouldn't be flexible enough to grab an obvious upgrade staring him right in the face. The NFL is constantly changing, and my concern is that Idzik's lack of previous GM experience leaves him without the savvy to understand that it's impossible to ardently stick to a premade plan without any adaptation.

Nothing to do with this thread, but is there any update about when Chris Johnson is expected to be released, Bent?

Report on WFAN. Goodson suspended for first 4.

I think people under estimate the effect a healthy, legal free Goodson will have on the offense it's undeniable the limited amount we saw from him that he is clearly the best back on the squad and is undeniably more than talented enough to be one of the  top RB's in this league. Will he? who knows but he can certainly be the back we need.

Idzik better hit some home runs in this draft or he's in trouble!

Question to my fellow Jets fans if the team go 7-9 or 6-10 who should take the blame Idzik or Rex?

@J. Smooth

I think all the background noise about DJax simply gave Idzik the excuse he was looking for to pass on another big ticket FA signing, which he apparently wants to avoid at all costs.    Talent-wise, DJax was a perfect fit for what the O needs, just like an array of FA CB's and S's that were available were what the D needs.

I understand wanting to build through the draft and follow a plan you believe in, but as you note, it's Idzik's apparent rigid adherence to that 'plan' that's got me worried.

Passing on DJax is less impactful for me, because I think there are plenty of quality WR's available in this draft...but passing on the many CB's that were on the market has now puts him in a position where he almost has to use a high pick to go get a CB; possibly at the expense of acquiring another much-needed weapon on O.     To me, that's a questionable decision, and a dilemma he created for himself.

@J. Smooth  You gotta take into account that he gets to play against Philly twice a year now. Plus who says he wanted to come play for the Jets? The media/ fans arent particularily nice to the players, especially diva types.

@Brian Serviss  The last update I read stated that they have some team activities starting up next week and it was expected he'd be released before then.

@MPTG_Frank  Not sure this is correct.  I think they may have misinterpreted a very poorly worded Manish Mehta tweet.

@Hoz I am going into this season expecting us to not be in the playoffs. We are rebuilding. If we make it, then great. but 7-9 / 6-10 is about right for 2014. Especially with the schedule we have.

@Hoz  Assuming no major injuries?  Idzik most likely, but it depends on how it actually happens.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hoz  Did they go 6-10 because the team had terrible players? Lacked discipline? Injuries to key players?

Or were you hoping we'd just confirm your belief that it's okay to prepare to bash a guy 10 months in advance?

levi

@Hoz  You cant judge that just by the record.

@Hazard2012 @J. Smooth  I agree with the CB. He should have gotten one CB, even if it was just bringing Cro back or getting DRC. But he didn't and now I'm just hoping Patterson stays healthy

@Brendan @Brian Serviss  I heard last Thursday or Friday that he was expected to be released this week and that that the Jets and Falcons are seriously interested. Haven't heard anything else since

@Bent  Ha...how funny would that be.

Trying to understand what ground a second suspension would be on.  Isn't that double jeopardy?

Maybe so. No one else is reporting it.

@Wilkershakes @t__k Idzik has the resources to sign a stud CB and another WR, but he has chosen not to.  Which is fine, if he hits on the draft.  But how will he defend his decisions if he doesn't land a good CB and WR in this draft?

Hazard2012

@dabronx @Hoz

Not sure we're exactly re-building coming off an 8-8 year.

The offense is being built...and can't help but get better considering how ugly it's been the last few years.   The QB situation should improve, regardless who's starting.  Decker helps, but they still need a #1 WR and a #1 TE, plus a third down back w/WCO skills.

On D we need a CB, Patterson notwithstanding, a true FS, and a edge rusher to bookend Coples.

The good news is they can probably address almost all those needs in this draft if they get it right.

Hoz
Hoz

@Brendan @Hoz  You can say & believe what you want but imorovements is improvements & no I don't depend on a bunch of rookies because its a crap shoot.

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@Brian Serviss @Hazard2012 @J. Smooth

Why settle for a second-rate secondary when you can build something better?   Let's assume, and hope, Milliner picks up where he left off...why not get a top CB in this draft to pair with him?    So what if it takes him a year or more to grow into the role...like it has Milliner.   That's where Patterson, etc. come in.  He holds the fort until the rookie is ready.

Brian Serviss
Brian Serviss

@Hazard2012 @Brian Serviss @J. Smooth  all Patterson has to do is play better than what Cro did last year and hope that Milliner plays more like end of the season Milliner and the secondary will be fine. Not great, but they won't be horrible if this happens

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@Brian Serviss @Hazard2012 @J. Smooth

I don't think Patterson is the answer any more than is Lankster or Walls, etc.   They're place-savers for someone like Dennard, Gilbert, Puller, Baptiste or McGill, etc. who'll be drafted high and will be the future CB of this team.

I'm OK with that, growing pains and all, providing we also get an edge rusher to mentor under Pace and eventually replace him.   With the Sons up front and Coples and say an Attaochu, Dee Ford or Van Noy on the other side opposing QB's will have a lot less time to find open targets.

@BDarc23  assume by "crappy reporting" you're _not_ referring to TJB. Basset, Bent et al are producing top-flight content day in and day out.

BDarc23

@Brian Serviss @BDarc23 @Brendan  I agree that CJ would be great and I wish they would sign him. I mean, what makes you think Idzik would change course now and not just go with the draft?

BDarc23
BDarc23

@Brian Serviss @BDarc23 @Brendan  I am asking a question. What indication has Idzik shown that he would make a move like this? An aging RB who think he should be starting and getting a multiyear deal...I don't buy it.

EDIT- FWIW I have been optimistic on like 10 big FAs because I let the TJB speculation and crappy reporting get to me.

BDarc23
BDarc23

@Brian Serviss @Brendan  What has Idzik shown to think there is anyway that he'd sign Chris Johnson... the only possibility would be if he was unsigned after the draft.

Brian Serviss
Brian Serviss

@Brendan @Brian Serviss  if he's willing to take a pay cut then definitely go out and try to trade for him. Just make sure it's guaranteed that he takes a pay cut before they pull the trigger on a deal

Brendan
Brendan

@Brian Serviss I'm sure they're keeping a pulse on it, but CJ's current price tag is high. He said he'd take a paycut, though, so who nkwos.

Brendan
Brendan

@Brian Serviss CJ was drawing trade interest, so they're probably holding onto him for as long as they can to see if something can be worked out.

@Bent @Disgruntled Jets Fan  definitely a false report.

"A hearing has now been scheduled for May 19 by Judge Mary G. Whipple."

Goodson also maintains a plea of not guilty

I expect he won't be suspended if the gun charge doesn't stick.

Bent
Bent moderator

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @Bent  He CAN be suspended again under the personal conduct policy.  Manish was trying to make this point but in doing so made it sound like breaking news.

He said "Goodson suspended" when he actually meant "Goodson was suspended".

@levi @t__k I guess I could wait another couple years to see how it turns out...

levi

@t__k  He is building a team and he is in the drivers seat. It wont be a finished product after this draft either. If you think it will you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Give it a couple years and hopefully we are a young fast physical team that will be competing for the division every year not just one due to FA.

Wilkershakes
Wilkershakes

@t__k Every team has to draft players that make at least average-starter contributions.  With the cap structure, there is no way a team can "buy a championship" today.  It is more important for the teams that use the "build through the draft" philosophy to hit on more players, but that's why they have assembled so many draft picks.  The percentages stack up better to get more of those contributors.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hoz So you want me to comment on a made-up negative record that is worse than last year's even though the team is in all likelihood going to be better?

Okay. My comment:

I don't think the Jets go backwards record-wise this year. So I'm not entertaining the torches and pitchfork witch hunt discussion until at least midseason.
