our uniforms are old dreary and outdated and change is good for the fans and for the players as well and  when you look good you feel good about yourself .. ask a player if  the opponent wearing black shoes looks less intimidating than in white shoes and your see the answer is YES 99% of the time is and the same can be said for less plodding colors and dull uniforms like the N.Y Jets for ex. this has nothing to do with our players not being explosive or whatever save that for another discussion and do research as i did and see what the effects of new uniforms or color schemes has on a opposing teams because it does so yea NEW UNIS PLEASE..

It may be our players, not the uniforms, that are the reason the Jets aren't explosive

QB Smith, Simms

RB Goodson, Ivory, Green, Powell

FB Bohanon

TE Pantale, Sudfeld, Anderson

WR Hill, Kerley, Nelson, Salas, Gates, M Campbell, Hakim, Jones

OT Brick, Ijalana, Aboushi

OG Schlauderaff, Winters, W Campbell, Ford

OC Mangold, Freeman

DL Richardson, Finau, TJ Barnes, Harrison, Wilkerson, Ellis

ILB Harris, Davis, Fugger

OLB Davis, Cunningham, Coples, A Barnes,

CB Wilson, Milliner, Dowling, Rose

S  Landry, Bush, Allen, Jarrett, Miles

P  Quigley

LS Purdum

This is our current roster minus Holmes, Cromartie and Sanchez assuming they get cut.

We need to add a QB to the mix, whether a draft pick or a FA vet.

I am not sure about Alex Green so I would look to add a RB via the draft or FA.

Bohanon was not very good but we don't use the FB that much....

TE we have nothing but question marks, need at least one maybe 2 through the draft or FA

WR another big question mark after Kerley and Nelson....I would think we add at least two more through the draft and FA

OT We need a RT unless someone thinks Aboushi or Ijalana is the answer.

OG We need at least one to play RG if we think Winters is the answer at LG.

OC OK at this position!

DL OK at this position but we may want a rotation guy with more experience.

ILB No depth, need at least 1 guy here through Draft or FA

OLB Coples is the only guy capable of playing three downs here so probably need to add to this group through the draft or FA

CB  Wilson is our Slot corner and Milliner mans one of the outside positions. Need to add at least one guy to start opposite Milliner and probably a depth/ST gunner type through the draft or FA.

S  This group is OK but talent wise, could be better......

P  This guy was not very good in 2013.

LS This guy is good.

There are plenty of opportunities to upgrade positions on this roster and several starting jobs up for grabs!

I count 6 starting positions and 7 depth positions that need immediate attention and a few others that could use more talent.

With 12 draft picks and FA we should be able to accomplish this quite easily while creating a more competitive environment.

I think this is a good starting point for anyone who wants to play GM and spend $45 million (actually more like $35 million as you need to leave money for the draft and the season) and shape our roster.......the question is:

What would you do?

Been saying they should keep Dunbar for weeks now. Glad The Jets Press is on board. As far as I'm concerned, MM and Dunbar are the only two "must haves." The others could be replaced.

FWIW - Namath did pick all four favorites (CHALK!), but this was the first time all four favorites won the divisional playoff games since 2005.

Steve Smith is great! A reporter asked him if would root for the Hawks next week and Smiths response was ""You really want me to thump you upside the head? That was the dumbest question, and that's the second dumbest question you've asked," Smith said. "I only cheer for one team. Actually, two teams. My team and my kid's team. Other than that I can give a $%^$#."

"Celebrating" 45 years......

Jan. 12th, 1969 is my avatar because I was at the game that day. Who would have thought that I was a 21 year old  kid just graduating from the "U" (before it was called the U;

now approaching retirement...still waiting for that 2nd championship. I'll repeat what I've said for 45 years...I know next year will be our year. Go Jets!

(FYI...tickets were $12. bucks...but I got mine from a scalper outside the Orange Bowl for $18., a lot of money for a kid in college in 1969).

@nynyParcells re-instituted the original uniform & helmet designs and the green & white have been there pre-SB. But trust me, it's not the uniforms. :)

If I was starting an evaluation of what I wanted to do with this roster, the first thing I would do is rate the different position groups.

So here goes:

QB.......Below (NFL) Average, needs upgrading. Geno flashed good to very good potential but also flashed potential bust.

RB........Average. Good hard runners, below average blocking and pass catching.

TE........Poor. Little NFL experience. Needs major upgrading.

WR.......Below Average. Good Slot receiver in Kerley, average Possession receiver in Nelson, no viable no. 1 WR on the roster.

OT........LOT is above average, ROT is poor with little NFL experience and needs upgrade.

OG.......Poor. Little NFL experience and in need of upgrade.

OC.......Above Average.

DL........Elite. Might need rotational guy if Finau is not ready.

ILB........Average, could use upgrade in talent.

OLB......Coples is good with potential to reach elite status while the other side is a crap shoot. Could use talent upgrade.

CB........Average, Milliner (average right now with elite potential) and WIlson (above average, probably at ceiling) have stabilized two positions but   this unit needs a starter across from milliner. Depth is poor right now, needs more talent.

S...........Average, Landry is a middle of the road guy while Allen flashes potential to become good to very good. Miles, Bush and Jarrett are question marks. Another area where more talent would not hurt.

LS.........Very good to elite

PK.........None right now.

P............Below average.

@a57se So then positional needs: 1 QB, 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 OT (Kinda), 1 OG, 1 DL, 2 ILB, 1-2 OLB, 2-3 CB, 1 K, and 1 P

= 15 Players with 12 draft picks and $35m (And not counting RB, because I don't think we need one). Obviously, with some basic re-signings these numbers go down quite a bit.

Howard, Douz, Walls, Lankster, and Folk are obvious re-signs to me. I'd also be on board with Colon and Cumberland coming back. I think that can happen for roughly $13m. That leaves 8 openings with 12 draft picks and $22m to spend.

I remember that game like it was yesterday.  I saw in on TV.  Glad to see I'm not the only non-senile older guy on the blog here. LOL

BTW, for all you youngin's, not only did the Jets win the SB in 69, but the Mets won the World Series famously and the Knicks won the NBA famously.

You lucky dog! I was too young to remember that victory and probably didn't even know who Joe Willie was, lol. I do believe like you that the the second one is real close. I don't think this season, but I can really see the big one in 2015. This season though, we will be on the move baby!

OK, so now that I did  my position analysis, I can frame the areas I need to address and prioritize them.

Any position or position group that is below average must be addressed in my mind as you are no better than your weakest link as a team. therefore the following needs MUST be addressed:

QB, TE, WR, ROT, OG, Starting CB (1), Depth CB, OLB (opposite Coples, running downs), PK, P

10 positions that need to be addressed with priority this off-season.

Starting positions that need to be addressed should always take precedence over Depth and talent upgrades, therefore TE, ROT, OG, CB, PK take immediate precedence. Inside that group, priority should be assigned based on projected impact on the team.

So for me the order is:

1. ROT

2. OG

3. CB

4. PK

5. TE

(Let me explain why the TE position falls down the priority list to me. Our offense did not emphasize the TE this year and MM does not have a history of featuring the TE all that much. I know a lot of Jets fans want to build a NE type offense but that is not what I have seen from MM and I am gearing my analysis towards how to best fit his offense.)

Next I want to prioritize the non-starting position priority list. QB, WR, Depth CB and OLB fall in this group and I would prioritize them as follows:

1. WR

2. OLB

3. Depth CB

4. QB

The last group I will prioritize is the talent upgrade:

1. ILB

2. RB

3. P

4. S

@a57se Milliner above average for last 1/2 of season and Wilson still well-below average IMO

a57se
a57se

@Marcus Armstrong

The 'openings' were just positions of immediate needs....upgrading the talent  at certain positions could easily increase the 'openings' to whatever you see as necessary and feasible......

I assume you have Howard starting at RT, Douz being the vet rotation guy on the DL, Walls and Lankster as CB Depth?,

Folk is the PK, Colon Starting RG?, Cumberland Starting TE? or no. 2 TE?

You would eliminate 4 or 5 'needs' with these signings depending on how you are looking at them....that is a good start.

@a57se@1969JAN12thAnd I was at SAC HQ in Omaha before going to Okinawa. Never thought it would take so long. Should've happened many times since: starting with the Mud Bowl fiasco.

@jaygo@1969JAN12th

Technically the Knicks won the NBA title in 1970 though it was the 1969-70 season.....The Willis Reed Finals....

but that was a great time in NY, the NY Rangers were pretty good that season as well though they lost in the first round of the playoffs......the Yankees were actually the worst team in NY at the time!

a57se
a57se

There is one other thing i have not mentioned so far and that is taking care of your own. This includes locking up players you believe to be part of the core for your team going forward.

I would prioritize the following guys who are under contract right now for long term extensions:

1. Mo Wilkerson an elite Defensive Linemen should be locked up for the next 5 or 6 years at a minimum. I would pay him higher then the best DT's ($9 million per) but less than the top DE's ~ $12 million per). so maybe a 6 year, $60 to $65 million dollar deal)

2. Kenrick Ellis has elite potential as a 3 down NT/DT and is entering the last year of his rookie deal. I would try and lock him up for 3-4 more years with an incentive laden deal that could top out at $7 million per but would have a min. of $2 to $3 million......

If we did these two deals, that would bring our Salary Cap spending spree down to ($45M - $10M) = $35M - $11M = $24M

The first $10M is for rookies and the 2014 season. The $11M is the combined Cap hit for Ellis and Wilkerson without massive pro-rated bonuses so the contracts are less of a burden down the road.

Hey! Anyone can be a critic! Do your own Position analysis and post it!

a57se
a57se

@Marcus Armstrong

Well the team usually posts a post-draft depth chart, it is just a projection based on your draft and free agency moves..... not a final roster breakdown. Gotta make sure you covered all your positions!

Marcus Armstrong
Marcus Armstrong

@a57se Correct. We have too many picks. No way 12 guys make the roster. I'd rather have another 2nd round WR (Whether that's Matthews, Cooks, etc).

Offensive Weapon. Slot Receiver/Gadget Back/Kick Returner.

And Depth charts are for training camp.

a57se
a57se

@Marcus Armstrong

So you have us trading our 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th round picks to move up for Matthews?

What is a OW? (Dri Archer)

What would your depth chart look like after this?

Marcus Armstrong
Marcus Armstrong

@a57se  Correct on all of them, except I'd have Cumby at #2 TE.

Then a draft of...

1. Jace Amaro (TE, Texas Tech)

2. Kyle Van Noy (OLB, BYU)

2. Jordan Matthews (WR, Vanderbilt) (Acquired via trade)

3. Jared Abbrederis (WR, Wisconsin)

3. Trade

4. David Fales (QB, San Jose State)

4. Trade

5. Trade

5. Dri Archer (OW, Kent State)

6. Trade

7. Trade

7. Jonathan Brown (LB, Illinois)

7. Pat O'Donnell (P, Miami)

Leaves us with openings at 1 ILB, 1 CB, and maybe one OLB.

Resign Wilkerson for $10m per, sign Verner at $8m per, and sign a backup ILB at 1/1.5.

Even leaves us a margin to sign Asamoah instead of Colon if the numbers work out.
