Why is Brian Costello (NY Post) and other media sources playing up the  fact that Jets wanted no part in the movie Draft Day?   For once the Jets took the logical road and put  the fans first and the possible reactions they would have if they did it, it would be circus city all over again.

Kudos to the Jets!  Wasn't Hard Knocks , SB predictions, QB controversies, etc. enough??

The Jets are finally on the right track, shredding its stupid image, and trying to become a team to be taken serious not taken to see the clowns.

The bigger question is Barr a player they want?  If he is you move up to take him,if that will even be needed he might fall to 18. I could see a Couples ,Barr as  bookends..

Is Barr slated to visit the Jets?  There is no way Idzik is trading up for him. But I'll be curious to see what happens if he falls to 18. OLB is not urgent need, but OLB is much more difficult to fill in this draft than WR/CB/TE

I dont see us moving up for Bar. Too may needs elswhere. Coples is our pass rushing OLB, he has shown flashes but has been hurt. Pace is NOT asked to rush the passer much in this system so I just dont see replacing him right now,  he sets the edge well. I could live with Kipers draft although I dont put much hope in a 3rd round CB stepping in. Would like a trade for Joseph. If CB is addressed WR and TE sounds fine

How is Van Noy a sleeper when everyone knows who he is and he could still end up going in the 1st round? Is that not the complete opposite of a sleeper?

CJ visiting Jets today, according to Cimini.  Hope they sign him.

I don't need a source for for what I wrote....and evidently neither does SI. Just throw out an idea and make it sound plausible. .........Jeesch !

It seems from the pass rush data, that if the Jets defense is to ever get to an elite level, that they will need a preeminent pass rushing OLB.

Good morning!!

Mel Kiper Jr. mocking us Cooks and Amaro with our first two picks sits very well with me, and helps make this rainy Ct. day bearable...

Hmmm...A Couples Bar in NJ huh? Sounds like a money maker.

@WW85

Not that anyone has reported. I don't think the Jets even met with him at the combine.

A 3rd round CB doesn't have to step right in....between Patterson and Walls the spot opposite Milliner is filled.

@juunit  While I agree with you. There is less buzz than Mack. I think a genuine sleeper is Attaochu though....

Why?

The data shows the Jets have one of the best sack rates in the league when sending just four players and also that they are higher ranked in terms of the pressure generated when sending four than they are when forced to send more than that.  How does that translate to "they need a pass rushing OLB"?

Coples and Barnes are two of the better pass rushing OLBs in the league IMO.

I hope Kiper keeps mocking them to us......he never gets our picks right!

Still?  I thought he got that out of his system when he called us a "glorified expansion team" 12 months ago.

@ww85 Disagree about OLB in this draft....there are quite a lot of interesting players who could fit our system.

@Bent @jake100  It seems many forget that Barnes is on this team. If he can repeat the rate he was playing before the injury when he was our best edge rusher I feel good about the pass rush.

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@Bent @jake100  In my view the Jets do not have a pass rush that puts fear into opposing QBS. Yes, they get moderate to good pressure , but to get to that top level, a real pass rushing OLB would do the trick. When the Jets send 5 the results are not overwhelming by far. I want a pass rush close to what the Bills have.

@a57se @kniff  Really?  So what is so bad about Cooks in round 1 and Amaro round 2?  I think that would be a nice haul, they could be BPA and need picks at the same time.  In addition Purefoy could be a 3rd round steal at CB.  This is one of the more preferable mocks that I have seen.

@Bent @kniff Oh Bent, my friend, you act like Kiper and other media prognosticators *actually* have to be held accountable for their failed predictions and falsehoods! What *really* happens means nothing to the media—the narrative of a chaotic circus of amateur talent being let run wild by a loudmouth buffoon of a coach who is on the verge of getting fired from the penny-pinching GM who clearly despises him --- that's the REAL story here!!!

It's almost like you watch the actual games for your information rather than rely on what the media tells you should be happening.

@Hazard2012

That is the interesting part in this draft...outside of Mack, NONE of the 3-4 OLB prospects are sure things.

So you are taking as big a risk, IMHO, in the 2nd round as you are in the 6th round at that position.

I look for prototypical size and certain physical attributes that I think Rex likes and go from there with these guys....

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@a57se @Hazard2012

Marcus Smith, as you mentioned below, Hubbard, Marsh, maybe Jeffcoat, though I think he'll be gone.  Obviously Michael Sam, but I'm talking more along the lines of a three-down OLB who can also edge rush, so he doesn't really qualify.

Who else?   But will any of them give you the bang for the buck that a guy in a higher tier can?

a57se
a57se

@Hazard2012

I can name a lot of guys who won't be gone by the end of the third.

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@a57se @ww85

Agree, as below, but the question is...where do we take them?    It's possible all the players we would name will be gone by end of the third...so how much of a priority is OLB and how high would we take one?   Would we take Van Noy, Attaochu, or Dee, etc. at 49?   At 80?

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@a57se @Hazard2012

Demarcus Lawrence and Kareem Martin also warrant a close look.   Lawrence might not be there beyond the third round, but Martin should make it to the 4th.

I like Marcus Smith and think he might be available in the 4th......there are other interesting prospects as well.

No, Attaochu is not a sleeper.  He may not get out of the second round...I've seen many mocks where he's taken in the first round...but he may be the perfect fit for the Jets.

FWIW, We've been linked to Barrow, Pierre-Lewis and Brown already.

I like Lamin Barrow from LSU, Kevin Pierre-Louis from BC, Preston Brown from Louisville, Jordan Tripp from Montana, Jordan Zumwalt from UCLA or Tyler Starr from South Dakota......

There are plenty of guys we could draft.

Hazard2012

@a57se @Hazard2012

Exactly why I'd like to snag Skov or Smallwood...but they may not be there.   After them the pickings get slim, indeed.

@Hazard2012

Bullough is not the answer....he is slower then Harris.

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@Gavin Buck @Hazard2012 @Bent @boomer @jake100

In which case a Skov or Smallwood could be nice options for one of our 4th rounders....if they're still there.   Otherwise, we're probably talking someone like Jones of Fla. St or Bullough Mich St.

Gavin Buck
Gavin Buck

@Hazard2012 @Gavin Buck @Bent @boomer @jake100  I think we may do a Davis & Bart Scott type thing with ILB, a 3rd / 4th and let them sit for a year and work on ST and then we have the flexibility if Harris walks in FA next year for the 2014 draftee next year to start in 2015

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@Gavin Buck @Hazard2012 @Bent @boomer @jake100

Also agree in the ILB, but not sure we can hope to get that done this year.   Davis sometimes gets lost in coverage, and Harris isn't getting any younger and is carrying a big cap hit.   Skov or Smallwood may be best we can do this year in mid rounds...unless Mosley falls and we take him early...not sure that's the priority play.

Gavin Buck
Gavin Buck

@Hazard2012 @Bent @boomer @jake100  I think we need to add an ILB and OLB, but I think we are ok if we do not. If someone is BPA we can take them. I think we have flexibility in this draft re. OLB

Hazard2012
Hazard2012

@Bent @boomer @jake100

Barnes notwithstanding, I'd still like to add a young stud edge-rusher from this draft to the mix, to mentor under Pace and eventually replace him.   Van Noy, Attaochu or Demarcus Lawrence, etc. could all fill that bill---added insurance now and the potential for adding another force of nature to an already imposing front line.

boomer

@Bent @boomer @jake100  Yep. I remember when the Jets picked him up last year and the talking heads were talking down the Jets for being cheap in FA.

Amazing how little some of these professional writers know about the sport they cover.

Bent
Bent moderator

@boomer @Bent @jake100  I don't see why he wouldn't be able to emulate that - he's been consistently among the most productive pass rushers in the NFL on a per-play basis throughout his entire career.

Bent

@jake100 @Bent  "In my view the Jets do not have a pass rush that puts fear into opposing QBS"

I disagree.  Teams specifically gameplan to mitigate pressure, as reflected in the lower than usual time-to-throw numbers we saw week after week once teams realized that getting rid of the ball quickly was the only way to move the ball and the Jets corners weren't able to exploit it.

Bent

@jake100 @Gavin Buck @Bent

"That takes time to develop, as the qb has to hold on longer to the ball."

Unless you leave two extra blockers in, then even the best four man rush in the league isn't going to get there very often against seven blockers...which is what often happens (and happened against the Jets) on those deep balls.

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@Gavin Buck @jake100 @Bent

But we gave up the most DEEP passes in Rexs entire tenure. That takes time to develop, as the qb has to hold on longer to the ball. I am not saying it is all on the pass rush as the secondary did suck, but those deep passes the QB does have the ball longer and we could not get to him. A ferocious OLB would take care of that.

Gavin Buck
Gavin Buck

@jake100 @Bent  I think last year we had an effective pass rush, the problem was that the secondary and Corners were absolute garbage.

WRs were allowed to regularly get open quickly and oppsing QBs knew if they could get the ball out quickly, the WR would be open to complete the pass. With a half decent secondary, giving the pass rush an extra second, would have paid dividends more often. Hopefully a more consistent secondary this year will enable the defense to work more effectively and consistently this year.

This was my perception on how things went for the defense, last year. Bent, from your film watching, did you seen anything similar or different?

@Brian Nerzig

I think ( IMHO) that Cooks and Amaro are products of the offensive systems they played in and won't have anywhere near the same success in the NFL.

Cooks is a slot receiver to me and will have some success there but the physical part of the game in the NFL will take its' toll on him.

Amaro is a move TE who doesn't block. He will find a niche in the NFL as well but he is not the second coming of Jimmy Graham or anyone of that caliber.
