Geno would have to take a huge step forward for the Jets to win the division. I dont think he can improve that much in one season.

For once I agree with Dick Cimini

For too long, the Jets have been playing offense with hand-me-downs from other teams -- free-agent pick ups, trade acquisitions and an assortment of castoffs. The list is long: Brett FavreThomas JonesLaDainian TomlinsonSantonio HolmesBraylon EdwardsKellen Winslow, etc. The Jets' best offensive player of this generation, Curtis Martin, came from the New England PatriotsEric DeckerChris Johnson and Michael Vick are the latest to join the recycled crowd, although Decker was a premium free agent. There's no law that says you can't build this way, but the lack of homegrown talent is both alarming an mind-boggling.

Try to wrap your brain around this: The last-drafted skill-position player to make the Pro Bowl on offense was wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, the first overall pick in 1996. As Keyshawn himself would say, "Come on, man!" They've drafted some "almosts" over the years, players such as Mark SanchezShonn Greene and Dustin Keller, but they never hit it big for various reasons. Santana Moss and Laveranues Coles made the Pro Bowl, but they did it with the Washington Redskins. The point is, the Jets never will escape also-ran status until they draft and develop their own stars. They should keep that in mind when they start drafting in 11 days.

Can't anyone spell Dimitri?  Come on Manish.

Mind you, Cimini managed to misspell "development" and "and".

Coples would be a a no-brainer for the fifth year option if they had to make the decision today IMO.  He'd have to have a major unexpected setback this year for them not to exercise that next year.  $7m is a bargain for a productive full time edge rusher.

Also, Coles DID make the pro bowl as a Jet after they traded Moss to get him back.  He just didn't go.

@levi if both he improves and his weapons do, and we do better on special teams and the secondary, it's theoretically possible.   I know that's a lot of ifs.

All Geno has to do for the Jets to win the division is protect the football. Turnovers kill teams. Sanchez was unable to protect the football which is the main reason I hated him as the Jets QB. Geno looked like a rookie last year making one dumb mistake after another. His turnovers were a major issue......which is why the coaches wanted him to use his legs more.

If Johnny Manziel is there at pick 18 I hope the Jets draft him and trade Geno......That is what I would do......Nothing against Geno who still may get it together but I think Manziel is going to be a better QB

@bradysucks How crazy is that, almost 20 years! I'm curious as to where that compares to other teams. That's just a terrible stat to be associated with.

@Bent Dmitri (or Dmitriy) would be how I'd spell the actual Russian name, but everyone does it differently,  l

like they do for my own name.

we should have a TJB version on Politifact to fact check the sports writers.

@bradysucks  Geno needs to do a lot more than just stop turning it over to improve but that is a big part of it. Hopefully Idzik and Rex dont share your love for Manziel.

I don't think Manziel will be there with the 18th pick anyway......but if he is the Jets almost have to take him....You only get so many opportunities to draft a potential star QB.......There are always opportunities to add WR's and CB's

But as a rookie he beat the Pats and should have beat them twice. With Geno improving or Vick playing winning the division is within reach. Would I bet on it, no. But Brady is another year older as well.

Geno played like a rookie and some hall of fame QB's like Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman were also pretty terrible as rookies......

I'd agree that the accuracy needs to improve but I'd think that his 2nd year running the west coast offense should be better than his rookie year......Furthermore Geno will have better talent around him.......

Now if Geno regresses it is obvious to me that Vick will be the QB and the Jets will draft another QB next year.....

There really is no reason for Geno not to be better in 2014 because

1) He'll have better wide receivers around him

2) He'll have a better running game

3) It will be his 2nd season running Morninweg's offense

4) He'll have Mick Vick mentoring him. Vick knows Morninweg's offense

@bradysucks  As I said cutting back on the turnovers would be huge but he has other issues too. He wasnt very accurate, he didnt get through his progressions, he stares down his WR's, he holds the ball to long,  needs to look off the safety and a lot of his turnovers were because he didnt read the D. These thing are typical struggles for a rookie so Im sure he will improve. But will he improve enough in year two to win the division? I think not.

Theres also no way of telling if we will have a top 5 D or top 5 run game. I like the optimism though.

Disagree.....

Geno completed about 55% of his passes in 2013. That is about the same completion percentage as Mark Sanchez when the Jets went to 2 AFC Championship games.....

The issue with both Sanchez and Geno is turnovers. I expect the Jets to have a top 5 defense this year and address the CB position in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft. I also expect the Jets to have a top 5 running game this year with Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory and either Mike Goodson or Powell.....

With a top 5 defense and a top 5 running game a below average QB can take his team very deep into the playoffs provided he protects the ball.......I've seen bad QB's such as Rex Grossman, Neil O'donnell, Trent Dilfer, and Mark Sanchez do it.......No reason Geno can't do this also....
