another bit off topic:
did the Jets claim LB Ricky Sapp or did he clear waviers?

Eight days until the first pre-season game!

Hopefully the offense can put some TDs on the board this year.

As a Pats fan I'm glad to see the Jets are back to their old tricks but I don't think it does a thing for what could be a pretty good team.  Their defense should be better but they are very thin in the d-backfield, Millner is going to have his hands full this year.  He is not the best db and the Jets are not close to the best defense but if they need that then yap on.  One thing is for sure, the Jets have one of the best d-lines in the NFL and they could get better which is scary.  I think there I no doubt the Jets are a better offense with Vick at qb but I understand why they are going with Geno.  They better hope he avoids a sophomore jinx but I think Vick will be in there sooner rather than later if they want to win any games.

Lucky 8-8 last year, catching a lot of teams late in the year that were already set for playoffs but you are what your record says you are and the Jets are and 8-8 team going into '14.  They could be anywhere from 2nd behind the Pats or 4th behind everyone.  If Vick gets in there early enough in the season the Jets could win 10 games.  If they go with Geno I don't think the offense will be able to keep up with the points the secondary is going to allow. With Geno all year I'm afraid it's another 8-8.  The offense just hasn't improved that much.

At least we usually get a couple of good Pat's vs Jet's.

I can't find the tweet anymore and I forgot to bring it up the other day when I saw it, but someone tweeted that the Jets have Samari Rolle in camp as a coaching intern. I like that move, he played all four of his Ravens years with Rex at DC, so if anyone can help speed along the progression of these CB's in the way Rex wants, it's probably him.

"Miller: Yeah, and I'll say this. I dont think there's that big of a dropoff when you go from Cromartie toDimitri Patterson. but the caveat is Patterson has to stay healthy. He's more than serviceable for what theyre trying to do."

Dustin Keller still out of a job.  That's really a sad story.  He was a good guy.  Just goes to show what happens when you jump ship to Miami (Pennington, Keller).  They have such a terrible conditioning program - basically Jazzercise and plastic free weights - they can't get in shape.

Lucky 8-8 last year..........

The definition of  "LUCKY" is drafting a QB in the sixth round and have him become an all-time great Hall of Fame player.

The Patriots' fans should worry about why the Pats have terrific win numbers over the last few seasons, but these same teams they met in the playoffs have given the Pats a below .500  record.  After you are finished giving the Jets your  so thorough suggestions and input, look it up.

I remember one time I went to a Pats blog and tried to act like I knew more about the Pats than Pats fans did.....Oh wait, I didnt do that because that would be stupid.

You better hope your O line holds up because Brady looks very shaky and fragile back there the past couple of years. Have you noticed how he is losing accuracy too? I guess you cant cheat father time or Bellichick would have by now.

We may not have an elite shutdown CB yet(Millner could be on his way though), but we are deep with #2 corners and our safeties should be stronger this year than last.  And Vick has been out played by Geno all offseason.  There is nothing to hint at Vick being better this year other than a bunch of old stats that really are not all that impressive.

The offense has improved markedly.

They were playing with what amounted to a practice squad receiving corp most of the year.  Not just the WR position but also at TE and passing catching out of the backfield. They have upgraded across the board including one of the better passing catching backs in the NFL.

Their running game will be better.  CJ still has a lot in the tank and having him platoon with Ivory, who will also benefit from not getting too dinged up because of his style of punishing running.  And Powell is no slouch coming off the bench.  And the O line will be improved.  How much remains to be seen but it will be better.

At QB, you've got to be kidding.  Geno showed flashes but absolutely killed the team with some of his turnovers.  He's already shown that he has grown from his rookie year and if he can limit those turnovers to half of what he did last year, a relatively easy goal, the O will be much, much better.

We should have beaten the Pats twice last year, had to settle for a split.  But the Jets have indeed improved a great deal in all 3 phases of the game.  And Tom is a year older.

Final four games were against (in order):

Oakland (4-6 at the time, poops)

@ Carolina (9-4 coming off a loss to the Saints, fighting for a Division title)

Cleveland Browns (4-10 at the time...poops)

@ Miami Dolphins (8-7 at the time, fighting for a playoff spot and holding 2nd in the division, which the Jets took from them)

Not sure what you're on about, but the final four games weren't as you described.

The team had a -108 point differential in four games (@ Tenn, Pitt, @ Buffalo, Miami), and had a +11 differential in the other 12. You say "lucky to be 8-8" I say this is a team that is primed to become more like the 12-game +11 differential squad than the 4-game -108 differential team.

Second definition of  lucky is not to have gotten a suspension as the Patriots coach and mastermind of Spygate, and not to have an investigation as to why did Goodell & Co. destroy the tapes.

@eurojet  Just heard all the yapping from Rex and last years draft bust Millner.  I thought Rex learned his lesson with these crazy predictions.  Rex is 4 games under .500 the last 3 years and is just not a very good head coach.  He is regularly outcoached and game managed.  Good defensive coordinator though.  Jets will never have an offense with Rex as head coach.

After looking at the roster I can't see the Jets winning more than 8 games.  They just aren't that good and lets face it, they are the Jets.

Brady is still a top 3 qb and that will be plenty for another sb with the Patriot top 3 defense.

@jsadolph  Jets secondary got torched last year and I don't see them much improved.  Not in the same league as NE secondary.

@boomer  The only game the Jets beat the Pats the refs handed them the game with a call that has never been made in NFL history.

@williamg1 Because of a Tim Tebow touchdown and a Victor Cruz TD, both in 2011.

Smith knows this defense better than anyone they could have brought in. Guys like this are a great tool. Players who have lived in the Rex Ryan defense before and could recite it in their sleep. It's not like he's bringing in any random players, he's bringing in intelligent former players who were talked about as future coaches while they were still playing.

It relieves some of the focus from Rex and frees him up to coach up more of his team.

@BDarc23 I think it's more the fact that someone in the MSM sees what we fans see, so it's worth noting. The fact that it's an ex NFL QB who wasn't entirely useless also helps.

Brendan

@Bernard Curtin Oh, good stuff, you managed to overrate your entire team in one sentence. The Pats really are the most efficient franchise.

Please go look at those comments in context. They are not what you think. Media misconstrues them. On another topic, the fact that you're here posting on a Jet site tells me you are concerned about your team.

@Bernard Curtin @jsadolph

Other than Millner playing very well over the last month and getting a full offseason that he didn't get last year and aquiring Patterson and getting rid of a broken down Cro.. That all will help.  It may be hard for an outsider to see the improvements in a young team, but the season can't get here soon enough so that we can show everyone these young guys improvements.

@Bernard Curtin  Your boy Bellichick was warned before the game not to do it but he chose to try it anyway. He lost. Even without the call the game wasnt over so we dont know what would have happened.

It's funny that people conveniently forget that the best coaches were often marginal or poor players.  They know what they're supposed to do (even if they can't do it) and frequently benefit from the combination of playing some and watching from the sidelines a bunch.

BDarc23
BDarc23

@Brendan @BDarc23 That true. I say it like it is so obvious but all we previously heard all offseason is how the Jets lost Cro at CB and it's a major weakness.

Also you state Rex is not a very good HC. How did he beat the Pats in NE, in the playoffs, with Sanchez at QB?

Wilkershakes
Wilkershakes

@tsjc68 @Brendan @williamg1 True.  I'd also add that they were marginal or poor players in most cases because they had less athletic talent than their counterparts and even those they had beat out for the job.  They made up for it by knowing where to be and what to do even though their body couldn't make it happen.
