Coples will have a great year, IF he stays healthy. D Line could be awesome. Outside LBs are going to put up numbers.

I wonder in preseason will Rex showcase Milliner Allen Pryor McDougle secondary i have them penciled in as week 1 starters.

Cimini predictable negative spin - I particularly hate the perspective he engineers regarding Decker. I think its a pretty good indicator of how positive or negative a reporter is by where they stand on Decker's salary. Prior to free agency, the pundits were saying that the jets would probably need to pay 8m/yr for Decker. By that measure they did well by getting him for around 7.25m/yr. At that point ESPN immediately threw out the question - is Decker a Number 1 receiver - a question of absolutely ZERO significance. Since they harp on that angle insistently, they create the story out of nothing and now that is the question he will be measured on going forward. Too bad...The real question is whether he will be worth the money to the Jets. This number one versus number two talk is just idiotic.  He had terrific statistics for the past three years (yes including his time receiving passes from Tebow!) He is a Very Good receiver 12 most yards, 8th most TDs, 9th most 20 plus yard catches and 6th most 40 yd plus catches. Finally 9th most first down catches. He is a good receiver. But is he a true number one? since that title is an arbitrary pundit assigned label bestowed on players by idiots who rarely rise to a level of mediocrity in their ability to provide insight, deep inside facts, or accurate predictions - the whole number 1 vs number 2 question is stunningly irrelevant.

FIVE BURNING QUESTIONS AT THE OTAs

by Rich Cimini

1.) Does this rash look bad?  It burns.

2.) How were the Jets able to bring all these rookies to OTA with so little cap space available?

3.) When will Rex stop playing Coples out of position?

4.) Seriously, this rash burns.  Do you think I should have it looked at?

5.) Are there any good places around here to buy some mom jeans?  Asking for a friend.

I love these articles that talk about the desire of players... Of course they say they want to be good and work hard. I have yet to read one when the player says "Nah, i'm just gonna dog it this year.."

I hope Coples means it.... could be a game changer.

Day 1 of OTAs and two players tore their ACLs. Cowboys fans are already looking ahead to 2015 with Sean Lee, and Hixon will probably just retire after his third tear.

The Jets have no holdouts like Houston (cue Andre and Justin), no media distractions like Manziel and Sam... but let's see what our resident pessimists come up with.

@Hanknaples I'm pretty confident that there wasn't a range of PDs, Unless you're saying that if he gets 7 PDs more than Coples you lose the bet.

@a57se Remember that a lot of these guys might be on pitch counts already, so guys like Patterson, Ivory, Barnes or Johnson may have a scheduled day off.

@Hoz I can't see McDougle starting over Patterson. Its going to take him some time to move ahead of Lankster and Walls.

Patterson over Dex.

No denying Decker is a good WR but to act like all WRs are created equal is a bit ridiculous. Defenses double team and put their best CB on a teams worst WR all the time.

Bent
Bent moderator

@mrblint Yep, Decker's contact is 18th highest among NFL wideouts for average annual value and outside the top 20 for total value, guarantees and guarantees per year.

So a better question would be "Is Decker a top 20 WR?"  But wait...because there's plenty of players who could claim to be a top 20 guy who are still on their rookie deal.

It's a good value contract and, like you said, experts predicted much higher, including the top source out there (OTC) projecting he'd get $12m a year.

@tsjc68 Thanks for the morning dose....I was on the road yesterday on calls on the west coast of Florida.  I was beat when I stopped for coffee on my way back.  I opened up the blog and was drowning in yet another BS-Hill sucks diatribe.  I thought it was only me that had it up to here....so glad to read almost everyone else finally writing that they had enough.  57 bet proposal was the show stopper!

@rkymtnjet Could be a good opportunity for them to dump some talent to rescue their horrible cap situation going forwards.  If only they had some talent.

@rkymtnjet

Well, Coples stinks.  Milliner is the worst corner in the league and he's our best corner.  We've got no WR, other than a solid WR#3 in Decker; though that hardly matters because our QBs are Geno Smith, Mike Vick, and Matt Simms.  That's like a game of "pick your venereal disease."  Izzy is supposed to be rebuilding, but he's throwing money away on wash ups like Chris Johnson and Vick.  Next, he'll be bringing in Andre Johnson to limp around the sidelines.  If this team wins four games next year, it'll be a miracle.  I think W. Johnson should sell the team and move it to Toronto, where all those crack smokers can enjoy another bottom feeder - misery loves company.

@Pat d It's also kinda silly to think that Decker can't beat a good CB. If he's doubled, than he did his job. Somebody has to be open.

tsjc68
tsjc68

Decker being a legit #1 (i.e. able to beat/draw the other team's CB#1) would be nice.

It's not all that necessary, though. Even if he gets shut down by CB#1s and isn't a true WR#1, by functioning as a WR#1 he draws the top matchup and thus create easier matchups for Kerley/Evans/Enunwa/Saunders/Hill/Nelson et. al. as they draw lesser CBs down the chain.

@jetlife @machoking HAHAHA ok, point made. I guess I appreciate his honesty. I doubt Coples wants to be mediocre, just kinda don't believe all of these reasons. The knock on him coming out was that he was a bit lazy.... hope that isn't true.

@a57se @Bent @williamg1 Jets Insider have had access for years.  They're fully credentialed, like Leberfeld, as far as I'm aware.  They do a great job at the OTAs and camp.

Jeane is there representing SNY, I believe.

@williamg1 @a57se You can participate even if not signed, but in the past I know players haven't practiced on the day that they signed - maybe that's a superstition that goes around?

@tsjc68 My concern is about who will be the other starting WR not named Kerley.

Bent

@Brendan @a57se I gotta admit that takes balls.  I like Hill, but I could certainly see a scenario where they opt to go with an Idzik pick over him come final cuts.  Similarly I could see a scenario where we look back to May 2014 and laugh at ourselves for ever thinking Hill wouldn't make the team.

@a57se And then you said "put your money where your mouth is" and said bet $1000 on it, like five times.

@jdb4 @miamijoe @tsjc68 57 bet BS $1000 that Hill would make the 53 man roster.  (IIRC)

I'm pulling for QC he seems to be a really good dude, I just don't know if he will sucseed where he is being played. Give the man his props, he shows up at camp expecting to play opposite Mo & his spot is given to Sheldon, QC never complained. With QC it still goes back to the combine. QC finished dead last out of every defensive end ( not OLB ) invited to the combine in the 20 yard shuttle & the 3 cone drill. I believe it was Charlie Casserly who stated that QC would excell inside using his power/girth & massive hands to over power interior lineman.. I know there gonna move him around, but I just don't know if he has the knee bend & acceleration to consistently scare OT's. My other defensive concern is CB. Everyone on this site is counting on Milner to be a # 1 CB, which he may be, but I have concerns about his health. In college Milner could play through nagging injuries & be sucsessful, that won't happen in the pros. Counting on Patterson is utterly retarded, forget the fact that he has never been able to stay healthy, Westoff referred to that CB slot to be a massive hole in the Jets defense. Westy told us before the draft that Westy/Rex wanted Gilbert or Fuller but that neither would be available when the Jets drafted. Westy then went on to say that what Rex was willing to pay to move up to get either was much different then what Idzik was willing to pay. Look who got Gilbert, Mike Pettin, who runs the same defense as Rex

@Brendan @Bent You're wrong.  Rocket scientist Klecko says he looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane, a old quote he stole BTW.

@Bent I could be misreading the situation, but I get the sense he's like Carlos Beltran. Everyone used to get on Beltran for never "showing fire" or whatever, but he is apparently one of the most fiercely competitive people in baseball. He's just a stone-faced killer.

Coples strikes me as the "quiet fury" type of guy. Someone who will just look so "ho-hum" after beheading a QB because his fire burns internally.

Bent
Bent moderator

@machoking @jetlife Definitely not true.  Bassett spent a weekend with him and said everyone gushed about how hard-working and determined Coples was.
