The Cimidiot actually presents a pretty good case for Geno in his piece today...

In the Cover 32 article they sugar coated Winters play last season.  He did look better at the end of the season. But to listen to them, he was just a little below average.

The Jets will have some big receivers out there this year with Decker, Nelson, Hill and Amaro.  That has to be tough on opposing defenses on 3rd down and in the red zone.

It was a decent article until he decided to end with that 'too close for comfort' line.

@jsadolph

They also listed Enemkpali as a defensive linemen...

@jsadolph "Winters had a solid rookie year, showing flashes in pass protection and in the run-game."

Yeah...no.

Guess that's what happens when you cover 32 instead of just one.

Brendan

@BDarc23 And that group of big receivers is complemented nicely by Kerley and Saunders, two small, quick guys who can really hurt defenses that are paying too much attention to the bigger targets. You also didn't even mentioned Cumberland, who is just as much of a size issue as the rest of those guys. That's five players 6'4" or bigger, hopefully that helps Geno hit his targets.

@NJJDB

The possibility does exist, I don't see anything wrong with pointing that out.

@a57se @jsadolph That's probably because the Jets official roster defines him as a DE.  In fact in a post later on today, Bassett will include IK+ with the defensive line (although he does explain that this is based on the official roster in a first paragraph disclaimer).

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se The possibility exists that they won't remain friendly if Geno struggles, but history indicates it's less likely than the opposite. Vick's already shown he can handle being a backup to a young QB.

@Bent @a57se @jsadolph

If they had Jalen Saunders listed as an Offensive linemen would we go with that as well?

@Bent @a57se

Really? 6'1" tall and 263 pounds?

I guess he is a small 4-3 DE....with no speed.

@jsadolph @Bent

Anyone who says silly things like that belong to the club! Same with saying Harris is a top 100 NFL player!

Long Live the  Happy Meal Crew®!

@jsadolph I don't think anyone is willing to take the "Brian Winters was pretty good!" guy into their ranks.

Brendan
Brendan

@MarshRandy Even if he doesn't crack the WR rotation out of camp, we at least get to see him on returns where he should be plenty exciting. He seems to be the most NFL-ready WR they drafted, so he has an outside shot at taking a legitimate share of WR snaps, too.

Bent

@a57se @Bent Well, let's say he was to earn a role as a situational rusher.  The Jets would typically use a four man front with Barnes or Pace and Coples as the two ends.  Clearly he'd be a defensive end in those packages.  Obviously he wouldn't be a DE in the base defense but he's probably not in the mix for a role there.

Also, if this means he gets to work with Dunbar, that's not a bad thing for the kid's development.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se This is why we dislike you.

No one you call "Happy Meal Crew" has said either of those things. In fact, the majority of us agreed that those two things are silly statements.

MarshRandy

@Brendan I watched a bunch of his tape after the draft and came away super impressed

Brendan
Brendan

@MarshRandy My biggest concern was size, with rumors that he was playing at 160 or below for a lot of last season I just thought his body wouldn't hold up. But he's apparently packed on some weight and if he can keep it on and play in the 175 range, I feel much better about his chances.

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @Bent @jsadolph I think he's just using that to differentiate between DL and LB to be honest.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se No I didn't. You act like people on this blog are saying those things, when they're saying the opposite.

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@Brendan he puts on 5 or so pounds and it's essentially what Desean Jackon weighed in at. And they play similarly too, with Saunders more willing to catch the ball in traffic

@Bent @a57se @jsadolph

The thing is, Enemkpali is never gonna be mistaken for a 3-4 DE so they can only mean a 4-3 DE which he is undersized and slow for.

They don't list Pace, Coples, Barnes or McIntyre as DE's do they? that is the group he will be with, no?

I doubt he is gonna be in the meetings with Wilkerson and Richardson, our other DE's?

It isn't a big deal....

@Brendan @a57se

I only call people Happy Mealers when they make ridiculously optimistic statements...

It is like when someone says something really dumb and you call him a dope. It doesn't mean the person is literally stupid, just that that particular instance was really stupid.

You make a lot of ridiculously optimistic statements but you have been better of late...

@MarshRandy @Brendan

I've got it in my head he's going to remind me of Leon Washington in his first year in the sense people are going to say "who is that guy" after a few spectaculor plays from time to time.

As a rotational player,  I'm less worried about his size.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se They don't list any prominent DL as DE's. Everyone is either DT or DL, then guys like Ik, Hyder, Grady, Thompson and Fugger are listed as DE's.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Rex made the comment that Harris was a top 100 player. Some random website made the comment that Winters was good.

People on this site knocked both of those comments down immediately.

Brendan
Brendan

@bklyndude All it'll take is one big punt return for a score or to set up a score. People will take notice and from there it's up to Jalen to hook them.

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @Brendan He was a DE in college and the Jets play plenty of 4-3.

@Bent @Brendan @a57se

Where is this mystical, magical depth chart? I went to NYJets.com and NFL.com and neither had a depth chart for the Jets listed....

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se So, implying that the HMC is associated with those things is false.

a57se
a57se

@Bent

Bent, Do you seriously think Fugger and Enemkpali are meeting the the Defensive linemen or with the Linebackers?

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Who made up the HMC? Or should I say, who has applied it the most?

Me! Shouldn't I be the one making the rules about where it applies and where it doesn't?

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @Bent

I don't know much about Fugger but Enemkpali is backing up Coples as the RUSH and Coples does work at least some of the time with Dunbar and the DL group so I think that is likely.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Ahh..the few Depth Charts I could find all have Enemkpali and Fugger as OLB's...

That Roster list was screwey last year too, iirc...

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Um, no. You can choose to apply it whenever you want, but I'll be here to call it out as BS.

No one on the blog suggested either of those things, and people you peg as HMC argued against both comments. But that won't stop you from fighting straw men, as is your nature.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se

So on the Depth chart he would be listed as a OLB just like Coples?

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @Bent

I wouldn't read much into the official depth chart but the one they give to the players is in two parts.  Base, which goes END-NOSE-TACKLE on the front and SAM-MIKE-WILL-RUSH for the LBs and Sub which goes END-TACKLE-TACKLE-END and Coples was indeed listed as an end on this, as were Barnes, McIntyre and Sapp.

Since the sub package is the best guys like Fugger and IK can hope for, maybe they are correctly treated as DEs.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I most certainly am not. I laid out the facts, you just don't want to acknowledge them so you can rinse and repeat this behavior.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se

Then Coples should be listed as a DE...not a linebacker.

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @Bent But Coples DOES play in base, where he's listed as the RUSH.

Can you see why Bassett would just go along with what it says in the official roster rather than waste potentially hours figuring out who goes where?

jsadolph
jsadolph

@Bent @a57se

Especially when Rex preaches that he wants all his players to be multiple.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se

In the grand scheme of things it is meaningless.

I wouldn't 'just' go along with it, but that is me...I tend to think for myself.

Brendan

@a57se That doesn't make you special, the majority of people here think for themselves.
