Read some reports about 49ers potentially trading up for Ravens pick at 17 to take Beckham. I know rumours are to be taken lightly at this time but with the Harbaugh connection and SF having a bunch of early picks (6 in top 100, I think) - could be on of the more realistic possibilities?

Had an arguement in a barbershop about randy moss being better than rice. All the old people thought I was crazy, but I never seen anyone else make the catches I seem randy make. And jerry rice played his whole career with hof qbs when moss played with Brady he set records may have been outspoken and obnoxious but he ran a sub 4.3 forty jumped out the gym and had great hands made some of the most rediculous catches in nfl history

ESPN had something on Jerry Rice and Bill Walsh yesterday.  Walsh's skill was drafting "developable" players he could spot as opposed to the finished product.

Ergo...Jerry Rice from Mississippi Valley.

I haven't looked forward to the draft so much in years. I ran a dozen of those fanspeak drafts and it is really amazing the good players that were still available in the 4th round. There are so many quality WRs and CBs . Hard to figure who will be available - I like Marquis Lee, I think he would be the best compliment to Decker and Kerley unless Evans were available by some miracle - these guys are real receivers that know how to get open and catch the ball. I also think a 4th round pick could easily yield a quality WR (in my playing around with fanspeak I found guys like Huff, Archer (anyone remember Bruce Harper) , Herron, Brown and others) Having some real depth at WR will be fantastic and I think it might help Hill improve.  I still hold out some hope for Hill. The guy is only 22 at the start of the season. having three other guys that can get open plus CJ on the field can only help him develop. I am less confident that the CBs that are likely to fall to us will be 1st round worthy but I am sure a good CB can be had in the second or maybe even third. I don't want to draft a TE in the first round - I saw this analysis that showed that they just don't have the same impact as a great receiver unless you get a Gronk (that is actually durable - maybe I should have just said a Gonzalez) it just doesn't make sense. Finally I think the jets could pick up some real help in the secondary in the middle to late rounds. I am less familiar with the other positions but I am sure Idzik will surprise me a with some OL or LB picks along the way.

This will be fun to track.

Gruden's QB analysis is a joke.  He gets by on his overbearing personality more than his football knowledge.  I've had Division 2 coaches break down film better than he can.

We will need to address the safety position this year. This is where Calvin Pryor  comes into the picture- old school player who will light you up. Calvin can play the nickel and fits better in Rex's D.

There was a right up  on Zack Martin stating that he could play well at any position on the o-line however at the guard position they think he would be a pro bowler. What a safety net to have.

Its one thing getting  punch In da nose by Martin but getting another punch in da nose by Mangold Well dat would be just a little to much..

Awe No!  Another Sheldon Richardson or a Nick Mangold added to the offensive side of the line.. awe no!   would you like to run da ball?

I wish we had 4 first round picks this year. Becht would be a no higher than a 3rd rounder this year.

@jake100 I think those wins you mentioned are balanced out by the first Pats loss (where Geno threw the game away) and the fact that Geno clearly went into a total slump in mid season. There were several games where the D gave up few points but the Offense gave up the farm. This year if that happens He will get benched for Vick. If Geno can develop some consistency they will do very well. Our running game should be terrific and he will definitely have more weapons - if we can just hit on a couple receivers in this draft. The defense will be as good or better. We lost Cro, but last year Cro was awful. We could plug in almost anybody and we would do as well. But we should be able to add some real talent that might contribute right away.

@Brendan Yeah - these idiots conflated some unremarkable issues into the circus perception last year leading the rest of the sports press lemmings to totally underestimate the Jets. They had a regime that was easy to write about and they destroyed them - and now that Idzik has arrived they complain... they shouldn't have devoured the hand that feeds them. What incredibly lazy dbags.

@Pat dI am an old football fan...check that... Old Jets fan (first jets draft I ever read about in real time featured the selection of Joe Namath).. that means I am very familiar with the ground swell of hope that suddenly, inexplicably comes over many of us just before the draft. So I am an experienced fan (ie. I have seen a lot of drafts)  - - this sort of makes up for my actual lack of football intelligence. But this sure looks like a great Draft. In particular the talent at the positions of need for the Jets - WR and CB. Here is a fan speak draft I ran - I think the Donte Montcreif select could never happen in the real world but the rest is very much possible - this would certainly strengthen the Jets significantly.

JUSTIN GILBERT CB

 JORDAN MATTHEWS WR

 DEONE BUCANNON S

 DONTE MONCRIEF WR

 C.J. FIEDOROWICZ TE

 LOGAN THOMAS QB

 MATT PATCHAN OT

Ya know what I'm hoping for. Idzik says even if its close between a need at a skill position or the or a lineman who has a high grade  Idzik says that he's not gonna leave the grade level..So I'm hoping that the receivers  and cornerbacks and Ebron with high grades are off the board when the Jets pic...

and Zack Martin is still there..

@Hanknaples Are you really surprised that the GM of an NFL team didn't tell the press what he was thinking of doing on draft day?

If so, perhaps you should take up a new hobby.

@jake100  I predict that Joey's prediction will be 9-7.  Right around where everyone thinks they will be but then he'll be able to brag about being within a game or two so long as they win between 7 and 11 games which most people think they will.

He will also temper this prediction with a laundry list of negatives and concerns, so that if they under-perform he'll be able to point to that as the reason his prediction was off.  Hardly any of these things will come true (and indeed if they all did, then the team would have lost every game) thereby rendering his powers of prediction not that impressive, even if his final prediction is close to reality, which in all probability it will be.

What do I win?

a57se
a57se

@Disgruntled Jets Fan

Looking at the players we have shown interest in this year and last year, the scouting seems to be the same.

Please note I said "SEEMS", until we draft one or three, I won't know for sure.

Ivory kind of fits the mold in my eyes as he is more of a one dimensional back, same with Goodson.

Chris Johnson is the all purpose guy.....

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

@a57se @jetlife  Tanny is gone though, and it's quite possible that Idzik and MM have different ideas about RBs.  Neither Goodson nor CJ fit that "prototype" and Idizik hasn't drafted a RB yet.

a57se

@jetlife @a57se

Well so was Bryce Brown, Albert Morris and Arian Foster picked 6th round or later. The point is we seem to have an idea about what the RB should look like and that 'prototype' doesn't seem to turn out very good.

jetlife

@a57se Gannaway was a 6th rd pick, so I'm not gonna get all worked up about that. Greene was upsetting though, I will admit

a57se
a57se

@jetlife @a57se

He was our attempt at a 3rd down RB........Shonn greene and Terrence Gannaway were our power back picks and Andre Williams is of the same mold.

Powell was our attempt at an all-around back and that is what he is except he isn't very good at anything but trying hard.

jetlife

@a57se Well, Joe McKnight was SUPPOSED to be our 3rd down RB of the future. He panned out well as a good KR for 2 seasons, but I would consider him a disappointment overall.

@Hanknaples @Bent @jake100  I never did that though so don't put words into my mouth and then bash me for them. I was always the first to say that the things he got credit for were basic capology and to criticize the personnel on the roster when the coaching staff was often getting blamed for certain weaknesses.

Just because I pointed out when you were hilariously wrong about the Jets being in cap hell or Mangini fleecing the Jets because he got a bunch of dead wood for the 5th pick, that doesn't mean I'm praising Tannenbaum, just stating the obvious.

jmactheman

@a57se @jmactheman

a57se
a57se

@jmactheman

Simple.......The author who used the term was not referring to that aspect in his analogy, and I think that was patently obvious.

The lack of information coming out of Flo park this off-season compared to other seasons was CLEARLY what he was referring to so either you are ignorant to this history or you just don't understand analogies very well.

jmactheman
jmactheman

I don't think that would have worked. Put simply, I think Stalin (and the infamous Russian Winter) would have defeated Hitler's army. We would have had to defeat the USSR after they took over all of Europe.

I'm not sure how you can read the Gendercide piece and think I am "taking analogies to the extreme."

Costello's complaint isn't about football either, Hank. It's about media relations.

Costello presumably knows he has a reputation for hating the team. If he wanted to combat that, he could have used a better example of "people who are secretive" than the biggest bunch of mass murderers in history.

a57se

@Hanknaples @Bent

The same people take analogies to the extremes here as well.....it is like talking with 8 year olds sometimes.

jmactheman
jmactheman

Yes. If you include Soviet war crimes against the Nazis the figure for "People murdered by the Soviet regime" goes higher than 20 million. I used the 20 million figure because it counts with the same standard that "The Nazis killed 11 million people in the Holocaust" counts with.

Bent
Bent moderator

@Hanknaples @Bent @jmactheman  I wasn't meaning to imply you thought that, Hank.  However, your comment indicated that you agreed 100% with what you read so that's why I say it's dangerous to use that kind of language because other people with a tendency to agree what they read in the papers might take that one step further and agree with the wording in its most literal sense.

a57se

@__fense @a57se@jmactheman

I am fully aware of the 30 million (not 20 million) Russians who died during the purges of the 20's and 30's under Lenin and Stalin.

If we had been smarter in WW2, we would have let Hitler wipe out the Commies before destroying him ourselves.

jmactheman
jmactheman

@Bent @jmactheman@bradysucks While true, that's not even my point.

Costello's editors wouldn't let him compare somebody to the Nazis, right? Why not? Because the Nazis killed 11 million people.

The Soviets killed almost twice as many people. There should be a stronger cultural taboo against comparing people to the Soviets generally, but ESPECIALLY from a guy who covers the same group day in and day out.

Bent

jmactheman

@Hanknaples @jmacthemanIt's just "Peace Crimes," Hank. The 20 million figure only includes Soviet dissidents. War crimes committed against the German Army during WWII doesn't even count in that.

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, you quoted Costello accurately. I disagree with his larger point on this, but you apparently agree. I don't have a problem with you quoting what he said as a way of agreeing with his larger point.

Bent

@jmactheman @bradysucks  That's why it's irresponsible to use terminology like that, because here is a perfect example showing that one section of the general public will take whatever they read in the papers to be literal and true.

jmactheman
jmactheman

@bradysucks This is actually incredibly terrible. "Florham Park Kremlin" isn't Hank's phrase, that's a quote from the article he's discussing.

Hank is a guy on the internet. But Professional Journalist Brian Costello and his bosses at the New York Post apparently think it's OK to compare Idzik's management of the team to a regime that murdered 20 million people, and helped their allies murder millions more.

I hope that no one from the organization talks to Costello ever again.

EDIT: I also love how everyone assumes that "Florham Park Kremlin" is Hank's phrase, because it sounds like something that a crazy internet guy would say. Brian Costello isn't popular around these parts, but nobody here assumes he's THAT unprofessional. Sorry to have to break it to everyone.
