Some Xmas thoughts on the Jets:

-- We have the potential to be 8-8,  I thought this was totally achievable after last years 6-10 with the upgrades we made on DL, RB, LB and TE over 2012.  With more consistent QB play (by that I mean just mediocre more games rather than horrific), 9 or 10 wins were easily achievable (NE game definitely , at least one of Pitt/Raven Miami losses)

-- All this with a new offensive system, and rookie starters at CB, DL, OL,FB, and Coples at a relatively new position.

-- our running game has improved dramatically as the season progressed, Milner started showing why he is#1 pick, and with a full preseason should improve dramatically, and  our running game took off over the last 5 games with improvements in blocking by Bohanon and  our rookie guard

-- Kerley and Nelson showed they are players , Cumberland is a good #2 TE   get a #1 TE and 2 burner WR's from the draft or FA and we are set for a few years. Hill finally getting healthy and developing would be an unexpected bonus

-- Davis and Harris are solid at LB, Pace was great, but will he be able to improve or maintain next year at his age? need another Rush LB

-- Cro played hurt all year, if he can get healthy he will return to form next year

-- Allen mde huge strides at safety, but look another upgrade and  keep Landry.

SO FOR Next YEAR...

-- bring in a veteran credible Backup QB , keep Geno , don't draft a QB unless you can get a high upside bargain in 3rd or 4h round

-- Top three draft picks for offense, WR, TE, OL in no particular order

-- Other draft picks for defense, Safety, LB, best available

--FA  after vet backup QB, get best available  til money runs out of WR, rush LB, safety, TE OL

-- RB go with Powell, Ivory, Goodsen

With Brady a year older, Miami in disarray from last game loss to us, and Buffalo being Buffalo, we will win the DIv next year, maybe deep into Playofs, and definitely get a super bowl in 2015. But only if we stay the course with our Coach. My new Motto this Holiday Season

" Keep Rex Ryan in REX RYAN NY JETS HEADCOACH"

Merry REXMUS JET FANS!!!

If Idzik was behind the decision to stick with Winters over Vlad all year, he should have granted Rex immunity and owes him another year.

before the giants first superbowl with coughlin the media had coughlin fired already but the giants stuck with him...cant go by these stories unfortunately right now only idzick knows what he wants to do

All these stories coming out have me really nervous about Rex's status. He has to stay he is the only coach for this team. There is no other coaches out there unless Idzik wants to get some coordinator form Seattle.

There are worse coaches out there Shanahan and Schiano to name a few.

KEEP REX!!

The Ny and national media are just plain awful they simple are out for blood, they are out to run Rex Ryan out of town the season isn't even over yet and a good number of them seem to think that this is the only thing that matters. The game Sunday is huge for both teams a loss on either side will almost certainly Guarantee sweeping changes for either organization, I haven't decided which side of the fence I'm on for or against Rex staying all I can do is be patient and wait, unlike the sharks that are circling around this story.

Woody hired John Idzik to work with Rex but for how long 1 year 2 years or Possibly more, only Woody Rex And Idzik know that for sure. last year the daily news had a back page with the headline Rex wants out, this year we are hearing Rex will be fired. Idzik has already traded Revis, drafted Geno Smith so it's likely he will dismiss Ryan too but I just don't think it will happen if the team finishes at 8-8.

This blog makes me laugh really hard sometimes. If Sanchez and Geno had a baby it would be part Steve Urkel and part Mr. Magoo (I'm talking about vision on the field as a QB). And YET Rex Ryan is to blame for these 2 horrendous QB's and should be fired. This is absurd.

Rex should get a statue for managing to get as many wins as he has gotten since 2009 with these 2 misfits at QB. Now granted Geno is a rookie and we shouldn't give up on him! Woody Johnson is gonna extend Rex's contract (and he should).....Rex has done a great job considering what his GM's have given him to work with.

I'm so done w/ the nonsense, Idzik almost has to make a change, in order to take ownership/responsibility for this team. If he were to extend Rex, & the whole thing fails who's fault is it? It's an offense based game now. How long can we go on w/a head coach who wants nothing to do w/offense? What happens w/Idzik decides to stop drafting defensive players, shifts away from w/Rex has been doing. A GM should get to pick the HC who agrees w/his philosophy/ideas. The HC should be allowed to hire his own staff. That's life in the NFL. If they were to let Rex stay on next year, then the clock on Idzik doesn't start to run for another year.

theeditor
theeditor

The bottom line is that if Rex is such a defensive genius, why have his defenses gotten worse in each of the 5 years that he has coached. And his using washed up Ed Reed over Antonio Allen was his biggest mistake. The defense statistically has gotten worse since he made that switch.

So I think he has had a fair shot. He hasn't done it the past three years. So we need a change. But I would keep MM as I believe he is developing Geno into a quality QB.

If they can't get Gruden or Cowher, I would be amenable to giving Rex a one year extension and hiring a new DC AND SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATORS. But if they don't do that, Rex should be fired.

Ok, after going to all but 2 Jet Home games since 2002, if they fire the 3rd best coach we've had since 1965 when I started loving the Jets, I will STOP buying my season tickets, I will never go to another Home game at The meadowlands again, until either Woody gives up the team or they fire Idzik.

WE WON 7 GAMES THIS YEAR AND ONLY A 61 YD FG KEPT US OUT OF PLAYING FOR A PLAYOFF SPOT RIGHT UP TO THE LAST DAY.  Rex did that because he makes mediocre players good , good players great and bad players  average, by his leadership , enthusiasm, and love for the game, and most importantly his love for the NY JETS and  people like me who have stayed with this team through bad owners, bad players, bad coaches, with the dream of someday getting back to the Super bowl. HE IS OUR COACH,...HE MAKES PEOPLE PLAY "LIKE A JET" AND HE MADE THAT PHRASE MEAN SOMETHING.

BRING BACK REX, DO IT NOW, BEAT MIAMI, GET HIM SOME PLAYERS NEXT YEAR AND LETS WIN A SUPERBOWL

Robert Jensen

Lots of Whisenhunt haters huh. For the record , w/the Cardinals hired Ken, they had something like 8 consecutive 10 loss seasons. In his first year he took them to a 500 season. Whisenhunt went on to win to division titles & a Super Bowl appearance. Give the dude a chance

@Johnsbodybyvi Ledo I have to agree, the mobile experience is AWFUL.

However, if they insist on using Livefyre, there is no native mobile app, at least currently.

@theeditor

The answer to your question about the defense getting worse is the offense has turned the ball over at an mind boggling pace over the last 3 seasons, the loss of a healthy Derrelle Revis didn't help either, While I will agree with you starting Reed over Allen didn't help things much getting a new DC under Rex makes no sense, you think some Johnny come lately DC has better Schemes them Rex Ryan?

levi
levi

@theeditor Im not sure if Reed should be starting or not but he has had two picks in the little time he has played for them. You cant argue with results, this team has struggled mightily to get turnovers.

All I want for Christmas is u to leave. I'm serious. U make me want to die.

DrJonathanReefer

And Rex took a team that went to 3 AFC champion games in its 40 year history and took them to two more his first 2 year without a hall of fame QB and WR. You give this dude the benefit of the doubt about not having a QB last year but Rex hasn't had 1 ever.

I am against giving him more than one year. So I guess fire him!

Robert Jensen

Quiet down, almost everything you write is wrong, see my name, I'm in the phone book...let's get togther. Rex never one a division title...none. Never went to a Super Bowl. So how is he so much better

levi
levi

@a57se @bob I could be wrong but I think it was rumored when Idzik was hired thats who he wanted. But I cant remember if it was for DC or HC. Its still just speculation anyway. If weve learned anything this year its that Idzik keeps thing close to the vest.

Zartan
Zartan

@levi @Zartan , that only changed when the refs called a bs call and Rex showed some emotion by yelling at a ref(never seen him go off like that. The guys were not playing football.

@Zartan Coming from the guy who said the game was over at 3-0 on Sunday.... I dont think I will take your "obvious" opinion to strongly.

@Zartan I'm pretty sure this is due to the change in the system, and nothing to do with Bassett (who I don't think posts more than he has in the past, possibly even less).

Zartan

@djf1 @Bent @a57se @Brendan Has that not been obvious since OTAs? Basset has been doing most of the posts. It's called a power trip.

@Robert Jensen , so If Idzik decides to keep Rex, you'll pipe it down and go all in?

I for one , feel that John likes Rex but told his Guys, he'd bring them in. It's a toss up on what he'll do but i think it will be his choice. I just hope you can live with it if Rex stays.

@Robert Jensen LOL.  I know plenty of people with math degrees, some of them can barely tie their shoelaces.  This doesn't mean anything other than he's OK at math.

Jon Idzik has a massive c**k. FACT! 13 inches. Joey has confirmed this.

Ryan Flanagan

@Robert Jensen Are these comments serious? I'm embarrased to be reading this blog right now. IQ and putting together a football team have virtually nothing to do with each other. Intelligence Quotient measures intelligence through a rigid structure that has absolutely zero to do with fielding a successful football roster. What the hell does IQ and Universities have to do with your defense of bringing in Whisenhunt....this freight train carrying a heaping pile of feces has now derailed.

juunit
juunit

@Robert Jensen

Well for one thing, MIT > Dartmouth.

For another, you're generalizing an entire population based on an opinion of yours.

Finally, even if Idzik does have an IQ of 150, it doesn't mean he's good at running a football team.

Robert Jensen
Robert Jensen

He has a degree in Mathematics from Dartmouth or someplace like that. You need a monster brain to accomplish something like that. Kids who go to MIT places like that, they all posses monster IQ's

davem

Hahaha. It's in the phone book, look it up Juunit. Haha. Who is this new DB?

__fense

@juunit That sounds like something that would come up in articles when he was hired, if it was true.

juunit
juunit

How the hell do you know Idzik has an IQ of 150?

Robert Jensen
Robert Jensen

When they fired Man genius what was there record? How many teams had to lay down for us to get in? Listen I'm not a Rex hater, all I'm saying is we hired John Idzik, now give him his chance, otherwise we might as well have kept Mr.T. Idzik is a really smart dude, like 150 IQ smart, let's see what he can do. They haven't introduced Whisenhunt yet, I just figured he was coming w/we hired Graves

Zartan
Zartan

@Robert Jensen I agree with this post but there can not be any set- backs, the team can not finish with a worse record than this season.

I bet the Browns would love to have Bellachick back.

@Robert Jensen People who restate the same opinion 900 times are just as annoying as rude people.

Brendan
Brendan

@Robert Jensen Nothing you've said is a reason to hire him. He had a HOF-level QB and was good, and when he had bad QB's he was HORRRRRIBLE.

Robert Jensen
Robert Jensen

Your not wrong about Patriot thing, but Whisenhunt is not the horrible coach he's being made out to be on this site. He has a good offensive mind

Ryan Flanagan
Ryan Flanagan

@Robert Jensen Um there's a little thing called the Patriots....you know, the worst thing any team in football can have in their division. When Arizona won the division the Seahawks and Niners were a complete joke so that holds no merit.

Robert Jensen
Robert Jensen

I'm not the rude punk, I don't tell you to quite down, I offer an opinion, I don't crush others...My opinion is that we hired a New GM who is hopefully going to be able to hire/fire all the people he wants. We hired him based on his vision, his ideas. If Idzik doesn't want Rex ( & I do not believe he does ) then so be it. Whisenhunt is a good HC, he had a bad year, but he has accomplished a lot in his career. I really don't care w/Idzik hires, as long as it's his decision. I want our GM to be the one making the calls, not a bunch of people in a room playing Rock Paper Scissors, only to have Woody come in & overrule everyone

Brendan
Brendan

@Robert Jensen Oh, yes, now we get to the part where you try to intimidate me over the internet.

If Whisenhunt had the Pats in his division he wouldn't have ever won anything, either.

Robert Jensen
Robert Jensen

Arizona hadn't won a division title since like the 1970's in another state. Your gonna broadcast that, how about the fact that teams had to quit 2 years running for us to even have a playoff birth..it's all a waist of time, wait to see who Idzik hires & then get behind it. I really enjoyed Rex & Mr.T's early years, it's just time to move on

__fense
__fense

@Robert Jensen Division titles are very different depending on what division you're in.
