Draft Profile: Darqueze Dennard

Fox Sports profiles projected first round cornerback Darqueze Dennard from Michigan State.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

True, the Jets just drafted their third first round cornerback last year dating back to 2007, but the team does need help in the secondary and Dennard has a reputation of just the sort of physical cornerback that Rex Ryan loves coming out of school.  Dennard is known for excellent technique, hand placement and uses the boundary to his advantage.  While the Jets might have their eyes on other prizes should  some of them have gotten snapped up prior to the 18th pick in the first round, it would be hard to pass on Dennard who could give the Jets one of the best young corner tandems in the league.

If Cooks is gone, I'm good with a CB, but only if he's gone.

@Brian Bassett

I like Dennard a lot but I have heard you mention him as the most physical CB in the draft and that is not true.  He is physical and will tackle, but the most physical CB in this draft is Kyle Fuller by a wide margin.

Dennard will be gone by the time we pick, but if he was somehow still there I would be ecstatic if we got him. The only WRs which I would place higher on the BPA chart than Dennard would be Watkins or Evans, and maybe just Watkins. Throw in that it would give us a strong youthful secondary to couple with the DL and how could you not want Dennard @ 18? Did I mention its a CB in Rex's system?

I would want to see us take some WRs and hopefully a TE in rounds 2-4, but this draft will have strong WRs in rounds 2-3, they wont have CBs in the same league as Dennard by then though. Unless its a Defensive lineman I would hope and think that Idzik will be going completely BPA regardless of position.

We need a stretch receiver or less the coaches still have faith in hill I don't, but if Dennard is there at 18 he will be hard not to pick up

The Jets strategy is to draft CB's in round 1 as many years as possible within a decade and then trade their CB's so that they can play for the Patriots.....but only if they are going to the hall of fame.....

Another 1st round CB.....don't get it at all....especially when you consider that Idzik had a fortune to spend and consciously passed on every CB in free agency by lowballing them....

I like Dennard and Gilbert but the Jets neither of them are going to help Geno Smith......For those of you who don't remember Geno had 12 TD's and 21 turnovers in 2013 and was the leader of the 31st ranked NFL passing offense.....what's the solution? DRAFT A CB AGAIN IN ROUND 1 .......lmao

Kal Ripken

If we go Dennard in the 1st, a combo of Troy Niklas/ASJ and Paul Richardson/Jordan Matthews, could improve the team just as much as drafting a WR in the 1st

jetsfan14

At this point, I would be okay going either WR or CB in the first round--if the CB is Dennard or Gilbert. Otherwise, wait for the second and pick up Verrett or Fuller. I don't like the latest Mocks from Kiper and McShay that have us going WR & TE in the 1st  and 2nd. We need a solid CB.

@Jaime Rios  Funny how you guys have the same last name...i'll check the tape regardless...

You do realize Cooks isn't the best WR in this draft. Cooks will most likely be drafted in the 20s.

Pat d
Pat d

Lee will be gone before Beckham. And Marcus Roberson in the 4th, only in fantasyland.

Zartan

And Fuller is faster. Dennard has a safties body, he will not play CB for too long(NFL).

Cordell C

I think fuller is the best corner in this draft

Cooks would take Dennard to school....so would Lee

What team is it that you root for again? Just curious .

@bradysucks  none of the offensive players we have drafted have really worked out in the last 6 years.. I dont mind if they play to their strengths... Ryan obviously knows how to evaluate defensive talent.

I would rather hit on a first round defensive player than miss on an offensive one.

Kal Ripken
Kal Ripken

@bradysucks just because you have money doesn't mean spend it. im still mystified as to why we let Cro walk tho.

levi

@jetsfan14  With Milliner, Dennard and Wilson the CB position would be set for years. Get a true FS and the secondary would be awesome with that D line.

Pat d
Pat d

Come on, you must be a Virginia Tech fan.

bradysucks

@Monty @bradysucks

The Jets should easily be able to find a productive player in round 1 on offense.....This draft is stacked with offensive talent because there are so many underclassmen.........

You could throw a dart at the board and still get a great offensive player in round 1

Pat d
Pat d

Cro is done.

bradysucks

@Kal Ripken @bradysucks

Of course.....I am not suggesting the Jets be wasteful with money.....drafting a CB AGAIN in round 1 is a bitter pill when the offense is so terrible...

Cornerbacks are lame

Wide Receivers are NOT lame....

Actually an Oregon fan Gilbert has the most potential but I'm willing to bet fuller will have the best rookie year out of all these guys

harold

@bradysucks @Monty

McGill is not a 2nd round guy.  You really need to stop throwing his name around.  He is a tools player who has never really been dominant.  You hated Hill in the second.  This is a guy with potential but he has not been a great player by any stretch.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Monty @bradysucks

true.....but another CB is overkill....

The Jets can get a very good CB in McGill in round 2......Offense is the biggest weakness on this team and with our d-line we do not need to have 2 pro bowl CB's......The Giants won 2 superbowls with terrible cornerbacks......They had a dominant d-line just like the Jets have now

Monty
Monty

@bradysucks @Monty  you just never know what there is going to be a run on... if all of the top wideouts are gone.. who knows.. thats why draft specualtion is so weird..but it would be great to have another killer wideout

@Pete Whalen  If you want to draft BPA, you better fill key positions during FA. They didn't. We don't have a starting TE or #1 WR (let alone a guard that can step in if Colon goes down).

We didn't.

Cordell C
Cordell C

The talent on d is even more of a reason to draft secondary what's the point of having a talented front 7 with a week secondary teams will just quick pass on us like they did last year

Pete Whalen
Pete Whalen

Does not matter who was picked in prior drafts. Pick BPA. That's the plan.

Pete Whalen
Pete Whalen

People thought it was insane to draft Richardson last year. Turned out to be the exact right pick. I'm confident Idzik will go with his board and get us the right player at 18.

harold

@levi @bradysucks

So you thought Geno was just terrible and the players he had, many of whom were not even good enough to be on NFL rosters when the season started, had nothing to do with it?

You really show a total lack of football IQ with that statement.  Geno played poorly at times all rookies do.  But to totally ignore the skill players is negligent.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Monty

I applauded the Richardson pick....but I wanted to draft Star Lotuleilei.......so another stud d-lineman was fine with me......

This draft is different.....It's loaded with potential game changing WR's in round 1 and the Jets have had the 31st ranked pass offense 2 years in a row.....

For the record.....You have to score points to win in the NFL and what Rex has been doing by ignoring the offense has failed miserably.....The team has missed the playoffs 3 years straight because they can't score when they fall behind

Monty
Monty

@bradysucks  and people were scratching thier heads when the took Richardson..you cant go wrong picking the best player available,

I think its a lot eaisier filling offense through free agency than defense.. especially ryan defense. He needs certain types of players.. he needs press corners.

if we can have a top 10 defencse again with the upgrades on offense weve already made wed be a lockj for the playoffs..

wilkerson couples richardson are all power rushers.. they still need people to cover..

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Kal Ripken @bradysucks

We drafted a cornerback in round 1 last year.....

There are other positions in round 1 we should address this year

The Jets can get a very good CB in rounds 2-4

levi
levi

@bradysucks  I know what youre saying but the need is there for a CB no matter how many we drafted. We also drafted two top QBs recently but we may still need another one.

Kal Ripken
Kal Ripken

@bradysucks geno does need weapons but in what looks like a deep draft of offensive talent Dennard in the first wont be bad. and like you said we want to keep that defensive talent starting with Wilkshake.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@levi @bradysucks

I like Dennard and Gilbert.....I just think drafting a CB so often in round 1 is insane.......We drafted a CB last year in round 1

levi
levi

@bradysucks  Thats probably true but if Dennard is listed higher on Idziks board than Cooks (And he should be) or whoever you want then you take Dennard and fill a hole with the BPA.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@levi @bradysucks

The Jets already have Boss Hogg, Big Mo, Coples, Big Snacks, Pace, Harris, Barnes, Millner etc..........They are loaded with talent on defense and Idzik did sign a CB...

The offense needs MUCH more help than the defense....

Geno Smith

12 TD's 21 Turnovers.....31st ranked passsing offense....

Your solution? DRAFT A CORNERBACK IN ROUND 1  !!!!!!   :)

levi
levi

@bradysucks  Quit crybabying Idzik already got you 2 WR's and a RB. Im sure he will draft a WR too. I hate to be the one to tell you this but Geno played terrible and it wasnt his weapons fault.

Wil Mondejar
Wil Mondejar

@bradysucks  Fact remains the Jets don't

have a legit proven #2 cb and teams will feast like they did last year. Nothing paranoiac about this, a cb will lose you a game just as fast as a wr will. There'll be better wr options in the 2nd round than there will be cb's, and with the addition of Dennard and Nelson for the whole year with Kerley wr is not as weak a position as you're making it out to be.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Wil Mondejar @bradysucks

Cb's were a weakness because Millner was a rookie and Cro was hurt. The reality is that the wide receivers were a much bigger weakness,....

By the way, if Dee Millner plays the way he did in December the Jets will be solid at CB......Millner was player of the month in December to close out the season....

I think the perceived weakness at CB is PARANOIA from fans........Our weakness at WR is REAL

After Revis and Cro so many fans now think that if we don't have 2 elite cornerbacks that the Jets won't compete...and it isn't true because Rex Ryan will take what he has and he'll figure out a way to play smash mouth Jets defense....yes he will

Wil Mondejar
Wil Mondejar

@bradysucks  CB's were a major weakness last year that cost the Jets games. They are arguably as important a position as any on a team
