Draft Profile: DE/OLB Michael Sam

Fox Sports profiles Mizzou DE/OLB Michael Sam.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Sam is a mid to late round prospect who might struggle with the technique and speed of the NFL.  Sam might be best suited for a niche role as a situational pass rusher.  The Jets could use some young blood at just such a role and will have a wealth of late round picks come May 10th.

A lot of people have hopped on the Kyle Fuller bandwagon. This is a bit disconcerting, although I believe he can be a good player I don't think he's the right pick at 18. If he's there in the second round I'd be totally  cool with pulling the trigger. My main concern is his lack of recovery speed. This could be a reason why he rarely if ever played press man in college. If we do draft him we'll need to upgrade our safeties. Nobody on this team right now could compensate for Fuller's lack of recovery speed when he gets beat at the line of scrimmage and the QB throws the ball over the top. Don't fill yourself up on Fuller in the first...

If he's BPA then pick him, otherwise don't.   Same opinion I have about most of these prospects.

Give me a Hubbard or a Kirksey or someone like that instead ta....

He;s got a motor & he's got great attitude. He seems pretty small & slow, though. Don't see how he would make the team, but I'd invite him to camp UDFA.

So I was having a conversation with Mary Jane . She suggested that perhaps Idzik is hoping the additional cap space, and carry over for next year, could potentially land some 1st round picks signing fifth year options. I wonder if any will escape their teams. We will be loaded with cap space .

I have nothing against Sam personally, but if there are better OLB risks/projects available in the later rounds, I would just as soon go with a higher durability and talent level player. I know it is tempting for Woody and his merchandise people to go after big name recognition, but in the end it's the diehards that buy the most tickets, tune in on TV, and buy the most products...

I for one don't want to be politically correct, I want to see the NY Jets win football games, and let football culture stay football culture...

We owe it to the diehards (and some degree Rex) to put together the best team humanly possible.

Sounds like a good idea BB maybe you could show a night out on the town and get him to warm up to NY.

Lmaooooooooo Brian Bassett is determined to have this cat on the Jets, he is a good college player that was his level. Hopefully he took advantage of the education sports afforded him & he finds a career he can be happy with. As for the media leaving him alone if I recall he sought the media out.

Now a player with actual NFL talent but high risk as far as character goes is colt lyerla, guy has all the tools but goodness is he a train wreck off the field. If I am going to gamble on a player its going to be one with actual NFL level talent.

Looks like a guy who can play 15 plays a game on 3rd & long and obvious passing downs.....a 6th rounder, i guess. i'm sure rex can do something with a kid who had double digit sacks in the SEC.

@Cordell C  He plays mostly off-man...Off and press are two different things but similar in that they are both man to man...

Seriously?? How long did it take you to come up with that? Whatta wit......

@WW85 I saw an evaluation of him somewhere and the guy may not be the fastest or strogest but he is just good. He regularly beat the tackles on very good teams. Has very good technique and deceptive speed. The conclusion was that he needed more strength. Thats something that can be developed though - I would take him in the 4th (since we have 3 picks) or 5th

Circus would return, even if he's a good prospect.

@kniff The guy was one of the tops in the SEC in sacks. I want the Jets to draft guys that can play - I am tired of guys that win the combine (Gholston, Hill). He appears in the films to be very quick off the line - pass rushers don't have to be the fastest in the 40 yd dash  since they only run that far when things go very wrong anyway... The knock on him is not enough strength and that can be improved. Of course he is also a Jerk according to the blog's resident expert on being a jerk.

@sir_manolo When has Rex ever picked up a player for headlines? You are mixing him up with the former GM.

@blackwood1

I would give Lyerla a shot without a blink of an eye. He is worth taking in the 6th or 7th round.

@Lord Harry Latts

I have no problem with picking him up (in terms of value) in the sixth round. The question I have is will the media leave this kid alone?

blackwood1

@mrblint @WW85 Find that please because every other eval says not NFL player in a nutshell. Oh & he was horrible at combine & pro day.

@Zartan  UDFA I'd def invite him. But I wouldn't spend a pick on him

@blackwood1 I would go a step further and say it is Woody. Tanny had to go, but I think he fell on the sword because he was a good company man and didn't want to burn bridges. That's just me though.

@dabronx @Lord Harry Latts  Personally I have no opinion on Sam as I have not looked in to any player unless we might be drafting them by round 3. That being said I am not sure why people are fearful that Sam would bring a media circus. What exactly are you worried about? What are these terrible headlines you think the media will be running day in and out that is going to cause the implosion of the teams core?

Do you honestly think the media is going to attack the gay guy? That is career suicide, well unless your Duck Dynasty their power appears to be too strong to be kept off of t-shirts and towels.

If he is the BPA you take him, if not pass.

@dabronx @Lord Harry Latts  I think the media will be fine with him, at least in New York / New Jersey.  The fan and media reception to Jason Collins was very positive re: the Brooklyn Nets.  I'm not worried about his personal life being an issue.

All that said, I agree that talent-wise, he's far from someone I'd want in the 3rd or 4th round.

@Hanknaples I'm actually waiting till you come out as an A-hole, and find out everyone knew it all along anyway!

he came out when he was ready, probably because he knew that during the pre draft investigations by all the NFL teams he would come out , and to control the press it is better that he does it himself.  why are you obsessed with this?   just showing intolerance and usual homophobic prejudice?  Guy will have a tough enough time for the rest of his life  from people like you. judge him as a football player with limited athleticism, extremely high motor and NO off the field issues.

@a57se @Hanknaples reading this string of comments between you two is like watching two monkeys fighting over a coconut and Shi--ting all over themselves while they do. entertaining but somewhat disgusting.

@a57se @HanknaplesHe was not going to get drafted & knew this would be a good way to back in to a contract (no pun intended) & he probably would of been outed by a lover, which is sad.

@WW85 i forgot it was common knowledge amongst the team and coaches that they knew his sexual orientation...

WW85
WW85

@rstysanchz  He came out to his teammates a year earlier.. How could anyone blackmail him?

rstysanchz
rstysanchz

@Hanknaples  according to michael sam he came out before the draft so teams would know in advance what they were getting when drafting him instead of him being drafted and someone else coming out for him after the fact....im also wondering if he did it to stop someone from black mailing him once he signed a contract and had a little money

WW85
WW85

@a57se Exactly. He never made a big deal about it. The press did. I thought he was pretty dignified about it. Maybe he will get rich off of it. who knows. He doesn't seem like an NFL player to me, but a lot of drive can make up for physical skills.

Maybe we'll be the grown ups....and just talk about his football ability.
