Ex-Jet Aaron Maybin retires

Ex-Jet Aaron Maybin linebacker has decided to retire, according to TSN.

Maybin was the 11th players selected in the 2009 draft but was considered a bust and released by the Bills in 2011. However, the Jets picked him up and he surprisingly contributed six sacks and four forced fumbles. The Jets re-signed him for 2012 but he had a disappointing year and was released before the season was over.

Maybin also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, before finishing up his career in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts. Manish Mehta wrote a good article giving an insight into his character back in 2011.

I do not think Woody has been a cheap or bad owner, but looking at the contracts Sherman and Haden have signed certainly makes me wonder if Revis was worth the 12 million...

Maybin is a very good artist. I saw a feature on him a few years ago. I think he can have a career in art if he wants. I'm serious. Nice guy....wish him well

Oh, btw, Bent, I reached out to some Igbo-speaking Nigerian friends of mine regarding the pronounciation of Ikemefuna Enemkpali's name.  Here's two of them told me:

--------------------------

ME: My "friends with Africans" ear hears "ih-keh-meh-FOO-na EH-nem-kuh-PA-li", with the "kuh" barely audible (but still there). I've seen internet blurbs that say the K is silent, but that seems like a surrender to acculturation (as in, Enemkpali probably told the Louisiana Tech press crew not to bother pronouncing the K because they'd mess it up).  What's the verdict?

IGBO FRIEND #1: Your first name phonetics is good. Surname phonetics is tough, because the K is definitely not a syllable on its own like "kuh" and not silent either. To the non Igbo speaker, it's very difficult to teach. Say "blackpool" and swallow the k while putting the 'p' on the lips and without blowing the 'p' out.

IGBO FRIEND #2: "Swallowing" the K is good advice. I would say the first name is pronounced "EH-keh-meh-FOO-na".  In Igbo, I is pronounced like E and vice versa.

---------------------------

Hope that helps.

I went to one of the minicamps a couple of years ago, when he was still on the team. After practice , players go over to the sidelines where the fans are standing to sign autographs and stuff. The day I went, it was the offenses' turn to do it, but even still, Maybin was the first guy to walk over, signing things and talking to fans like he didn't want to be doing anything else. eventually, the rest of the players who stayed behind went inside, but he was 3/4 through the entire crowd, and he showed no signs of leaving. About 10 minutes later, two security guys came over to him and told him that he needed to go inside, and they stood there for 20 minutes saying 'last one, Aaron' before every signature he gave. He's one of the nicest players that's I've gotten a chance to talk to.

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the climate change "debate" earlier today.  It's nice to know for sure which people on the blog are capable of rational thought and which are idiots.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan  I was...and still am.

He only played a couple of times and didn't make as much of an impact as you'd hope.  They were hoping he'd give their defense a shot in the arm and it never really happened and they limped out of the playoffs earlier than they perhaps should have.

He did generate some pressure but no sacks and only two tackles.

@Pete 57  Global Warming was a joke from the beginning, the only reason government went along with it was to increase it's source of revenue, by charging us carbon taxes, which is by the way the reason obamacare was pushed down our throats, obamacare isn't reducing the cost of care, it's increasing it, it's a money grab, but now after record breaking winter storms, NASA and other media outlets are pulling away from it to save face and credibility.

I'm glad to see such vitriol-free well-wishes to a guy who, not unlike many other Jets, wasn't good but just wanted to be.

I like when we like our Ex-Jets, be they successful and legendary or unsuccessful and infamous.

@tsjc68  There;s got to be video of him saying his name, right? I think being able to hear it might help.

@tsjc68 reminds me of trying to explain to americans how to pronounce certain russian sounds.  It's tough.  It's usually about the tongue.

@tsjc68  I don't think we'll have to worry about pronouncing his name too often...

Anyone try to do this and nearly choke themselves half to death?

No, just me?

@tsjc68  He's still EYE-KAY to me so we can call him IK+ after that Karate game from the 90's.

I'd have put it somewhere between the two, so EH-nemk-PA-li.

@hawkeye The problem with political debate today is the self-righteousness on both sides.  Each side thinks that its opinion is the logical and rational one, while the other side's is emotional and irrational.  That's why I like sports arguments because most folks realize that the truth is somewhere in the middle, except when it comes to Brady.  He sucks!

I am not a huge hockey fan. But I have to admit when the Rangers are good, it is hard to top playoff hockey. I still enjoy Jet playoffs more but I am into the Rangers right now.

I wish all the ex-Jets well.......even Sanchez.....

I'm tough on some of the players when they're here.....(lol).......(shocker)

I am a self confessed ruthless Jets fan who wants to see the best players on the field........I was born after Namath won the Super Bowl and I want to see the Jets get a championship while I'm on this earth....It's selfish in a way but I do think that giving unconditional support to players who aren't getting it done after a few years is a waste of energy.......This doesn't mean I'm right......but I stay true to myself....

Every guy who makes it to the NFL should be proud........but I have higher standards for the Jets than I do any other team.......I'm a bad loser..... most competitive people are....

Have you ever heard a Russian try to say squirrel?  There's a video out there of it.  Other tough ones for Russkies: autonomy, freedom, honor, human rights, self respect.  They'd best brush up or the world is going to help them remember how they lost the cold war and ruined their worthless country.

The problem with political debate today is that things as unpolitical as scientific facts have been politicized.

@bradysucks  Ditto here, the only one I still hold a grudge against is Revis, who could have been a good sport and structured a contract to remain with the Jets.

That's funny, because it seems to me like your relentless "ruthlessness" expends way more energy that simple patience and perspective would expend.

JMHO.
