Four things Jets can do to address the question at CB

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

On Friday, Jets head coach told reporters that it was “still too early to tell” if the secondary’s centerpiece player, Dee Milliner, would be ready to suit up against the Raiders for the first game of the season.  With all questions about Dimitri Patterson and concerns at the team’s depth in the secondary, what can they do?

Keep more cornerbacks than normal — Normally, the Jets might not be able to afford to keep some extra players like Johnny Patrick and man-on-the-spot LeQuan Lewis.  Brandon Dixon might have been a 2014 draft pick for the team, but if this secondary had to press two of them into service, right now I’d take Lewis and Patrick over Dixon by a wide margin.  In other seasons players like Lewis and Patrick might feel the crunch.  But after some commendable play in the preseason after being put in a tough position, the Jets might find a spot or two (and playing time) for players like Lewis and Patrick while they await Dee Milliner’s return to the field.

Dee Milliner

How quickly can Jets top cornerback Dee Milliner return to the field?

Sign one of the few veteran players left – We wrote about the “big” names left on the market a few days ago.  Players like Asante Samuel, Terrell Thomas and Jabari Greer might all be looking to hook on with an NFL team … could the Jets be their next home?  If the Jets were to bring in one older player, I would like adding Drayton Florence the best, who played last season with the suprisingly good Panthers secondary in 2013.  There’s also the question of timing.  Could the Jets sign one of these players after the first week of the season when veteran salaries are no longer guaranteed for the entire season?  It’s possible, but it is an unecessary move for a team with around $20 million in cap space and serious concerns in their secondary.

Utilize the cutdowns – In past years, former GM Mike Tannenbaum would refer to this time of year as the team’s “minidraft” in which the team would use their prior draft grades from young players that were squeezed off rosters for one reason or another.  Teams might have wanted to move on, or just send them to the practice squad and the Jets tried to take advantage.  Some players that the Jets currently have on their roster that fit this bill are backup swing tackle Ben Ijalana, receiver Clyde Gates and former Packers running back Alex Green.  While the level of player likely to get cut and added via waiver claims is dubious, depth might be the play for the Jets here.  Two names that hit the radar that might fit the bill yesterday were Tommie Campbell and Brandon Harris.

Just wait it out — We fully believe that a healthy Milliner solves most of the problems the Jets are faced with in their secondary.  It seems unlikely that Dee Milliner will be able to play at 100% before October, but if there is one saving grace in this whole thing it is that the Jets play the Raiders in Week 1 who have yet to determine who their starting quarterback will be for their first game eight days from now.  Can the Jets whistle past the graveyard in Week 1?  It’s possible, but that doesn’t mean the Jets won’t want to get Milliner back on the field as soon as they can thereafter with offenses like the Packers Bears Lions bearing down.

Cant wait for week one. Lets hope the secondary isnt as bad as it might seem to some. Gotta have some faith in Rex to do his thing.

Id much rather stay and discuss the same stuff over and over but I have to go watch some poor sap say "I do".

"Brandon Harris is on the radar"....I followed Brandon's  career at the "U"; Brandon Harris = Kyle Wilson (without the finger wagging)....never look back, never find the ball.......pray your man drops the ball.

Lets see who the Jets sign after cuts.  Maybe they wait until game one so salaries aren't guaranteed.

The only off season move I was a little disappointed in was not investigating  Alterun Verner.

One thing you guys seem to forget is, the Jets don't struggle vs top O's or even top Qbs. (which one has really ever killed us much, Brady in a few games?)

The Jets struggle vs teams built the same as them. Why? Because the O was so bad, that even if we beat on a good O with our D, their D beat up our O even more.

I'm not worried about any soft azz team. Now the hardnose ones, i tend to worry about more.

Rontez Miles better be safe.

Funny thing is, next offseason we may very well be looking to bring in a quality FA CB.

According to many around here, we won't have enough money to bring in one of those FA CBs and also resign Wilkerson and Snacks.

@McGeorge  or Golden Tate, could have affected who was drafted in the 4th rounds and after

@McGeorge They were replaying the Raiders game on local LA tv last night, and the broadcaster kept saying that the Raiders really only have 1 receiver (and no QB). While I don't want to take any team lightly, I think the Jets can wait until after the 1st week to sign one of these vets.

@drjreefer Exactly, the teams that beat us are run stuffers combined with a multi tiered offense.

@drjreefer Your'e right, Cincinatti, Ravens, Steelers are good example of your statement, the other games could have gone either way.

@williamg1 I think we should trade Richardson for a top CB. Who needs 3 first rounders on the D line anyway? #overkill

@Brendan This would be the guy I'd release if we're going to dedicate a spot to an extra DB.

This way they can give Richarson's roster spot to Stephen Hill or Clyde Gates.....

@John Ledo I think we beat thee Steelers   If it was in Pitt, i'd agree. But we beat them at home

@John Ledo If we miss the playoffs because of the CB position, then Rex should survive, and the GM should be quartered.

@levi @williamg1 Levi...based on all the hand-wringing today about our team (that has yet to play a game), I'm pretty sure you will get some takers who think you are quite serious about that trade. #over-reaction Satrurday

I think we beat the chiefs as well.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@williamg1 @John Ledo If we fix our secondary somehow, I think we will be hard to beat, I think our offense will be better then what they've shown in the preseason, all we saw were a limited amount of plays from MM playbook with a few changes in Personnel, what's going to change is that MM will have different looks and skill sets out there, as good as Decker, Nelson and Kerley are, the aren't going to stretch a defense, that will change because you aren't going to see them together, you may in short yardage situations, but on 1 down and in 2 and long situations you may either see Decker or Kerley or Nelson with Saunders or Hakim or Gates/Hill and Amaro and Cumberland and Chris Johnson in the seams, this will dramaticly change the dynamic.

McGeorge
McGeorge

@williamg1 @John Ledo Unlikely.  And suppose Idzik brought in a highe rpriced free agent CB, and we missed the playoffs, then we didn't have that money next year for players like Wilkerson.  What then?

"Poor Planning Idzik, you shortsightedly spend money on a team going no where and now thefollowing year are squeezed, just like other poorly run teams ..."

WW85
WW85

@John Ledo A lot of teams we play also dont have great run defenses--which is why we beat the Saints last year. You have to be able to stop the run to beat the Jets. Many of these teams are much more vulnerable than it appears

WW85
WW85

@Pablo Bruno Offense greatly improved. the weak link is still nobody who can really stretch the field & open the middle up for Decker. Our running game could be really freaking good with our 3 headed monster. If you cant stop the run, the Jets are going to cause problems for you.

Pete 57
Pete 57

Mcgeorge, you make an excellent point. A team needs to have a plan. Idzik has one, some here do not like it. I do. I think his plan is to see if Geno is the guy and if so he will try and go for it next year. As you say, to expend too many resources on this season, it would handcuff him next year when he hopes to make a run. And if Geno isn't the guy, then we were going nowhere this year, or next. Now a plan can change, so if by mid season it looks like the team is a contender, outside of one spot, he would look to fill it. I know mid season deals are not the norm, it has been happening more often in recent years.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@WW85 I think we will have early success with who ever that burner is, defenses will concentrate on Decker Kerley and Nelson the tight ends the running game, which will lead to that burner going unnoticed and will lead to quick scores that in turn will open stuff up underneath.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@williamg1 @McGeorge @John Ledo

Thank you!  It is a ridiculous either/or argument.   Idzik could have done both, and good GM's do both all the time --- you build a team in more than one way.

Why is it so hard for Idzik's apologists to admit that, in the case of both CB and WR, he's laid a bleepin egg?

WW85
WW85

@Pablo Bruno But we dont have a burner? It's my biggest regret about the off season. I wanted a field stretcher who could open the middle for Decker, JK, Amaro. But we dont have that. there will still be a lot of safeties in the box. Was hoping for Hill, but you know how that worked out.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@WW85 @Pablo Bruno We have Saunders, Hakim who will make the team as special teamers, Gates/Hill whoever they decide to keep.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@levi @hazard2012

Without another quality WR to take the pressure of him...very possibly.   He's not in Peyton's Place, now.    We needed to get ourselves a quality WR in this draft, and none of the three we drafted have been impressive to date.   THAT's the goose-egg.

WW85
WW85

@Pablo Bruno Nobody is dropping a safety for those guys.truthfully. We really dont have anyone like that

boomer
boomer

@hazard2012 @levi Amaro is a quality receiver. I don't know why some ignore him.

TE has always been a feature position in a MM offense. With Nelson, Kerley and Decker our receiving corp is light years ahead of where it was last year.

levi
levi

@hazard2012  Knock it off. He signed the top FA WR and you are telling people he did nothing. Get serious.

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@WW85 @Pablo Bruno Exactly and that is why we will have early success getting quick scores, once defenses start accounting for them or get burned, it will open stuff up.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@boomer @hazard2012 @levi

I like Amaro.  He was one of the top four TE's in the draft, and I'm on record as having said the Jets had to land one of them.

I've also said they probably see Amaro as much as a WR as a TE...which makes sense, so we're in much better shape at WR than we are at CB.

That still doesn't change fact that none of the three WR's we did draft have shown much of anything to date.  Maybe they will moving forward.  Let's hope that's the case.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@levi @hazard2012

I never said Idzik did nothing.  I said his drafting of WR's and CB's hasn't turned out very well.  It hasn't.   Case closed.

WW85
WW85

@Pablo Bruno I dont think any team needs to assign a safety to Hakim. He's not going to beat a CB 1:1 unless he's much better than we think.

levi
levi

@hazard2012  Yeah ok. He should have drafted a WR in the 1st and second rounds, plus got Decker, Signed a top CB and also somehow drafted a top CB. Anything else on your wish list to Santa?

Pablo Bruno
Pablo Bruno

@WW85 @Pablo Bruno he doesn't have to be, he would be much faster then the typical corner, not too many players in the nfl run sub 4:3 40s, and you can probably count players who run 4:25 on one hand.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@levi @hazard2012

We didn't need Kris Kringle for this wish list---and Christmas came early with our mountain of cap $$$ and twelve, count 'em folks, 12 picks in the deepest draft in a decade...especially at our two biggest positions of need.

I might be wrong in having expected he'd do more with those kind of resources to work with, but I don't think I am.
