Free Agency Focus: Picking through the remains

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Now more than five days into free agency, most of the top free agents are now gone, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a number of quality players remaining on the market.  Here’s some the Jets have been linked to, but might be going quiet on.

CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie — Had the Jets been able to sign DRC I think a lot of the growing angst would have subsided among Jets fans.  It has been reported that for the right price Ro-Cro would have come to the Jets, but was that price 6 years for $54 million?  Higher?  We’ll see what happens with the Giants today, but DRC might yet come to the Jets and it might closer to the team’s terms than the player’s.

WR James Jones — Earlier in the week, the Jets were said to have real interest in Jones.  While the landing of Eric Decker Thursday night was said to not matter much to the Jets interest, it would seem that at least one side has cooled on the negotiations.  The Panthers were reported to be interested in Jones … but his market has been surprisingly light.

QB Mike Vick — Mike Vick might not be a starting quarterback in many places in the NFL at this point, but there are teams where he should be able to beat out competition.  Oakland and New York are two cities that seem to make sense, but Vick needs to understand that nothing is guaranteed for him any more.  At the present, it would seem that he is waiting for either guarantees to start or at how the draft shakes out with QB needy teams before he makes a decision.

TE Jermichael Finley — Seattle looks to be the top team for Jermichael Finley, but nothing is done yet.  The Jets were reported to have made inquiries on Finley and he is still trying to find an NFL home.  The Jets courted Brandon Pettigrew before he re-signed with the Lions and despite his spinal injury concerns, Finley is by far the best tight end still on the market.

RB Maurice Jones-Drew — There were rumors that the Jets might have been interested.  Now that the top back (Ben Tate with the Browns) in free agency has signed, could Jones-Drew find a home soon?  He’s best now as a niche role player, change of pace or third down back, and profile fits what the Jets need most at the position to pair with Ivory and Powell.

CB Champ Bailey — I had heard rumors that the Jets had shown some light interest in Bailey.  But for what role?  Bailey is reaching the end of his career and has conceded that he might be better suited in playing safety at this point.  Would the Jets have interest to bring Bailey in in such a capacity?

CB Antonio Cromartie — Might the Jets and Cro be destined for a return?  Cromartie wants to team up with Patrick Peterson but it sounds as if that’s not going to happen.  We get that Cromartie probably wants to move on and make the most money he can elsewhere.  But if Cromartie can’t find such a deal returning to the Jets might not be the worst thing for both sides.

DRC is not worth 8 to 9 million per year. We need a CB, but I'd rather not severely overpay simply due to desperation. I'm warming up to bringing Cro back on a one to two year deal (favorable to the Jets - able to cut him after 2014 if he doesn't perform). Then draft BPA and hope one of them is a CB that can turn into a starter. Also, I have to agree with blackwood1, currently, Geno is not a franchise QB - and it's obvious Izdick feels the same way. I would be shocked if we didn't draft a QB in the mid to later rounds. I still think we can be competitive this year as long as Geno steps up or we have another solid signal caller behind Mangold.

Folks want to improve the offense yet keep forgetting we have no QB. You can hope & what not but Gino is no franchise QB as of yet if ever. Not a shot at the guy just a reality check, the GM is building a team & that takes discipline & vision. We still need to see what Gino really is and this season will tell a lot. I do understand how some can be worried but take a deep breath I firmly believe we are another yr or 2 away.

Source-free hypothesis. DRC's agents are scrambling to get him anything close to what he rejected from Denver. Don't think the Jets and Giants don't know it too. So this may go on for a while. After which, his agents will have some 'splainin to do.

If the Jets get DRC and MJD, that would be a huge upgrade, and Powell as a number 3 RB sounds really good on paper.

OK, sonce this seems to be popular today, I'll bite:

1st Round Odell Beckham Jr. WR

2nd Round Bradley Roby CB

3rd Round Troy Niklas TE

4th Round (TB) Bishop Sankey RB

4th Round Marcus Smith OLB

4th Round (S) Lamin Barrow ILB

5th Round Jalen Saunders OW/Returner

6th Round  Tyler Starr OLB

6th Round (S) Walt Aiken CB

7th Round Tom Savage QB

7th Round (S) Tom Hornsey P

All the guys I picked are within one round of where CBS Sports has them ranked except Sankey......

I am assuming we don't sign DRC and we do address the RG situation between now and the draft and that we bring back Ed Reed.

Well when you draft just 4 offensive players in the first 2 rounds between 2009-2014.........

Sanchez

Vlad

Stephen Hill

Geno

4 players taken by the Jets in the 1st 2 rounds between 2009-2014 - THINK ABOUT IT

Not only are none of these guys ELITE.....None of them grade out as AVERAGE at their position.....A disaster

We have to draft OFFENSE in the early rounds of this draft......And Idzik has many more holes to fill in free agency

1st round are you drafting Beckham over Lee or is Lee already gone

@a57se  Much rather have ASJ than Niklas. Just seems like a more pro ready player to me.

Still hate the idea of drafting a CB in the 1st 3 rounds........We need offense.....I'd rather the Jets sign Asante Samuel if they can't get DRC........How many mock drafts are you gonna do?

ODB could help us.....

Your mock drafts don't address our needs on offense as much as they should in my view....which wouldn't be a big deal if we were addressing them better in free agency....

@bradysucks  Geno may still develop into a decent player yet.  The Decker signing is a huge step. I am concerned that the Jets didn't go after guys like LaFell or Andre Roberts.

@Carlos Jimenez  We do not need a SS, we need a FS. I would take Reynolds in the 4th instead and a Pass rusher at the 3rd. Also TE must be adressed and early.

@Carlos Jimenez  I like your first two picks, although I would substitute Ebron for Lee... Evans is a winner.

@Monty Granito  Yeah. Then, a worthwhile media member questioned him on it and Mehta doesn't respond. That's an opinion to take to the bank.

@bradysucks  I'm fine with the BPA approach. If the best player on their board at the time of their selection is an offensive player, then fine. If it's a defensive player, I'd be fine with that, too. I don't think they can go into the draft thinking just OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE. Sure, they need to give Geno some weapons, but leaving a good defensive player on the board just because they need offense probably isn't the best strategy.

@bradysucks

I draft two WR's, a RB, a TE and a QB....

we did sign Decker and Cumby so we are pretty much set there and Sankey, Ivory, Powell and Goodosn is a pretty good RB stable....not sure what else you want.

Then again, I do my mock drafts to satisfy one person and I don't expect to meet everyones wishes......:)

@Carlos Jimenez  Agree with you too on DRC, I'd like him locked down Monday if possible :)

I just wish you'd be more focused on improving the team's weakest area which is the offensive side of the ball. Elite offensive talent is most likely to be found early in the draft.

But yeah....we all have our own "view' of things

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@tal8 Sorry my friend , but we do not yet have a QB that can take advantage of having that many WR's.  With a starting group of Decker, kerly and nelson with Hlll and anyone else coming in as a 4th we are fine. if and when Geno shows anything else beyond being an adequate QB.   this plus a strong defense and a heavy running game is our best shot. we need another TE and an RB that can catch out of the backfield, but Powell Ivory and goodsen would do fine for where we are at. plus a WR in the draft but not the 1st round.

we still have the two starting guards from last year if we sign Colon as expected plus the young backups.

we lost one OLB but get back Barnes. we have 4 safeties under contract right now without Reed who hasn't gone anywhere to my knowledge. Allen is fine in Rex's defense. time will tell but  I doubt sincerely is we spend anything special on another WR, and I totally expect the draft to bring us the best available player and not be position  directed.     best available is the way to go.

Frankly the weakest spot on our team right now is our Quarterback, but no one wants to admit that.

tal8
tal8

@Bernard Mclaughlin @tal8 @kniff @Carlos Jimenez  We did not fill our WR need. We need at least one more. Decker is not a magician. If we stick with what we have now he'll be double teamed or on Revis island. We did not fill a need at G, we brought in a RT. I m certain Idzik is not willing to trust them two young guys who have yet to play one snap. We have a definite need at CB after cutting Cro. We lost both Pace and Mc, so we only have two OLBs at the moment... That's a need as well. Allen is not a FS... Although he made special things at the position last year, he's still more comfortable at being SS in the box. That is why Rex brought Reed and now he's gone. So there you go... These are most definitely not wants... I think u r missing too many things here bro...

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@tal8 @Bernard Mclaughlin@kniff@Carlos Jimenez  don't confuse a need with a want. We filled our bigges need at WR we filled our need at OG and have 2 other guys on the roster from LY who were rookies so like I sid our real needs are TE(where MM's offense could use 2 pass catchers), CB where you need 3 top ones(Slot Wilson, CB Milner need another Man to man CB) and cover FS.

we have 2 good OLB's and perhaps Barnes coming back, not a hole but could get better, FS we have Allen and Bush not great but not a hole. Denver  got the complete team  through this method, they are adding pieces via the FA to complete the picture.  I think this is exactly what Idzik is doing , and building for 2015 and beyond.

@hazard2012 @tal8 @Bernard Mclaughlin @kniff @Carlos Jimenez  I truly fail to see who he passed up... The fact that Manish claims we were interested in somebody doesn't mean that is the case. We wanted Vontae and he decided to stay in Indy. We wanted and still want DRC but the guy's greedy... Takes two to Tango man

@tal8 @Bernard Mclaughlin @kniff @Carlos Jimenez

Suspect we all embrace Elway's approach to large degree --- though it's unclear if Idzik does.   He's passed on numerous opportunities to fill glaring holes in the secondary thus far in FA, when the talent he needed and the money to sign them were within his means.   This is the part of his approach thus far I have issue with and don't understand.

tal8
tal8

@Bernard Mclaughlin @tal8 @kniff @Carlos Jimenez  We are speculating based on what the team has done so far. Right now we have needs at WR/TE/CB/FS/OLB/OG. Non were filled... So we're going with that. Of course all pending on what Idzik does at the rest of FA. The fact that they went to see Amaro/Cooks/Lee/Watkins in their pro days means they think about the same stuff we are at the moment. Elway has a much complete team right now which is in a win now mentality. Ours is a very different situation.

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@tal8 @kniff@Carlos Jimenez   I share the oinion of John Elway that he spoke of the other day. In FA you strive to fill position holes. In the draft you have your board and you take the top graded person regardless of position unless you already have a long term Pro Bowler backed up by a ready replacement.  I really think that this is what idzik is about, Milner, Richardson, Smith seem to bear that out,  CB, DL and QB not being huge holes for us going into the draft LY. if you remember no one saw any of those picks .  So to me our biggest holes right now that we should get in FA if possible are CB, FS, TE,OLB and backup QB,  we already pugged a WR and OG, and use the draft for the best available unless its DL where we are stacked, and they should go for next in line on the list overall.

OLB they may be counting on Barnes coming back. FS and another shutdown man to man CB would help the most in FA.

@Hanknaples @Bent  I don't argue your opinion.  I merely correct content within the comment where you share your opinion which is inaccurate.

levi

@Hanknaples  The team washed its hands of Revis and I agree it should. I would like to see them get a FA CB but its not the end of the world if they dont. There is still a lot of cuts and trades coming between now and kickoff too.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Oddly enough, everyone the Jets used in those roles in 2013 is available (or, in the case of #2 WR, still on the team, I just hope they upgrade).

Bent

@Hanknaples  I don't argue against anything, I just correct things that are obviously wrong.  It's not my fault everything you post falls under the category!

levi

@Hanknaples  I think we make the comparison between Seattle and Jets because of Idziks connection to often but in this case I think it is accurate in the way that Seattle didnt spend much in FA'cy. It seems Idzik isnt gonna either. Just build the team methodically. I honestly dont think the talent was there to be signed anyway. Other than some CBs and I dont see Idzik paying a ton of money for a FA CB.

Bent

@Hanknaples @levi  Don't accuse me of brainwashing the Jets fanbase Hank.  I have never done that.  I strive to be balanced and fair when I write for this blog.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Well, he's a #1, but that's besides the point. He filled a huge hole on the team, via FA.

And I count CB, RG, WR#2, SAM as the remaining holes. That's four, not a zillion.

levi
levi

@Hanknaples @levi  Nah, I just think Idzik is a whole different animal and is gonna build the team methodically.

levi
levi

@Hanknaples  It is clear to see that they are building in a different way than before. Will it work? To soon to tell.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples No, as they stand right now the Jets aren't SB material. Neither are the Phins and they spent way more money than the Jets have.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Hank, come on man. You know SB's aren't bought in FA. If they were, Stephen Ross, Dan Synder and Jerry Jones would just rotate the Lombardi trophy.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples  They have a 38 year old QB with a fused neck, Hank. Their window is closing now, the Jets' window isn't even open yet. But sure, compare them if that's what you want to do.
