Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comNow more than five days into free agency, most of the top free agents are now gone, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a number of quality players remaining on the market. Here’s some the Jets have been linked to, but might be going quiet on.
CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie — Had the Jets been able to sign DRC I think a lot of the growing angst would have subsided among Jets fans. It has been reported that for the right price Ro-Cro would have come to the Jets, but was that price 6 years for $54 million? Higher? We’ll see what happens with the Giants today, but DRC might yet come to the Jets and it might closer to the team’s terms than the player’s.
WR James Jones — Earlier in the week, the Jets were said to have real interest in Jones. While the landing of Eric Decker Thursday night was said to not matter much to the Jets interest, it would seem that at least one side has cooled on the negotiations. The Panthers were reported to be interested in Jones … but his market has been surprisingly light.
QB Mike Vick — Mike Vick might not be a starting quarterback in many places in the NFL at this point, but there are teams where he should be able to beat out competition. Oakland and New York are two cities that seem to make sense, but Vick needs to understand that nothing is guaranteed for him any more. At the present, it would seem that he is waiting for either guarantees to start or at how the draft shakes out with QB needy teams before he makes a decision.
TE Jermichael Finley — Seattle looks to be the top team for Jermichael Finley, but nothing is done yet. The Jets were reported to have made inquiries on Finley and he is still trying to find an NFL home. The Jets courted Brandon Pettigrew before he re-signed with the Lions and despite his spinal injury concerns, Finley is by far the best tight end still on the market.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew — There were rumors that the Jets might have been interested. Now that the top back (Ben Tate with the Browns) in free agency has signed, could Jones-Drew find a home soon? He’s best now as a niche role player, change of pace or third down back, and profile fits what the Jets need most at the position to pair with Ivory and Powell.
CB Champ Bailey — I had heard rumors that the Jets had shown some light interest in Bailey. But for what role? Bailey is reaching the end of his career and has conceded that he might be better suited in playing safety at this point. Would the Jets have interest to bring Bailey in in such a capacity?
CB Antonio Cromartie — Might the Jets and Cro be destined for a return? Cromartie wants to team up with Patrick Peterson but it sounds as if that’s not going to happen. We get that Cromartie probably wants to move on and make the most money he can elsewhere. But if Cromartie can’t find such a deal returning to the Jets might not be the worst thing for both sides.
