Free Agency Focus: Wheeling and dealing is heating up

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Here’s some interesting free agent news that might or might not impact the Jets from around the league…

Terrell Suggs and Ravens restructure: Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs had a rather large cap number for 2014 and at the end of the season, Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome was candid about Suggs production versus pay. As was announced on Monday, both sides have worked out a new deal to lower Suggs’ cap figure for 2014 that will allow the Ravens the flexibility they need elsewhere.

DeMarcus Ware yet to open talks with Dallas: PFT shills for an agent reports that DeMarcus Ware has yet to enter contract renegotiation talks with the Cowboys. Ware’s availability would be a major change to the free agent landscape, but this sounds like an agent trying to force talks at this week’s NFL Combine.

Rooney wants Troy Polamalu to retire a Steeler: Polamalu has been a name that has floated this offseason as a potential cap casualty. Polamalu has been the face for the Steelers defense for many years and it is noble that the owner wants to see the safety retire after playing his entire career with the Steelers. The Steelers are, of course, rebuilding. Polamalu seems the type of guy who might be willing to do so for less than the market would command … don’t expect to see him on the open market.

Jason Babin seems a likely release: When everything was falling apart in Philly two years ago, Babin was a name that was brought up in hopes that the Jets might sign him to help the outside. The former “Wide 9″ was good for 7.5 sacks in Jacksonville this past year but could be cut for cheaper players Andre Branchand Ryan Davis. 7.5 sacks is attractive and Babin has some attributes to make him a potential fit in the Jets, but it wouldn’t be a three down role for the veteran.

Louis Delmas already has some suitors: Now that he’s cut, the former Lion is free and clear to talk with teams, knee condition or no. Delmas has been a solid coverage safety and will be looking for a new home now that the Lions have cut him. The Broncos and Falcons have expressed interest and the Steelers have already hosted the 27 year old. The Lions would like to sign Delmas back at a reduced rate, but that seems unlikely. The Vikings and Bears have been put forth as plausible teams The courting of Delmas shows that there is going to be quite a bit of interest this offseason in free agent coverage safeties thanks to the recent drought.

Is Alterraun Verner unlikely to be franchised?: At least that is what the lead guy on the Titans beat, Jim Wyatt, thinks about the Titans and Verner. Verner might not be physical enough to be a perfect match for the style of football the Jets play, but neither was Antonio Cromartie when the Jets traded for him in 2010.

Browns talking contract with TJ Ward: Now that Cleveland has taken care of the important business of firing their GM and President in February, they can get on with important business like trying to re-sign their top two free agents C Alex Mack and S TJ Ward. The Browns have a couple of weeks to get deals done with two good players at their respective positions … don’t plan on Ward making it to free agency whether that means a new deal or franchise tag.

Biggest need is safety. I would trade down, draft Pryor or Dix, sign a FA WR like Nicks, hope Hill develops, draft someone like Niklas in round 2. WR is very deep in draft, maybe hope to get the kid from Vandy.

Sign Babin and Pace to be a platoon at OLB give Pace1/ 1.5m. Babin 2/2.5-3m.per Sign Delmas 3/4mil per. Still would have money to sign a quality Wr (Nicks or Maclin are my favorites) and go into the draft with less holes.

Babin is an interesting name, he could be an upgrade over Pace and give a youngster time to develop.

Delmas is definitely going to be popular this offseason.

I didn't understand why at the time, and I still don't, but my friends down in Tennessee said they were 100% certain that Verner would hit the open market. Whatever, I won't be complaining if the Jets land him.

@jimfan08   i don't think we can concentrate on the draft right now because we don't know what we'll do in free agency. are we going to make a big splash and sign top FA's like byrd, tate or orakpo? or are we going to sign multiple mid-line players to build the depth and fill the numerous holes we currently have?

once we do that then we can get a better grasp on which players we should target in the draft.

@jimfan08  No. Wide Receiver and Cornerback are both clearly bigger needs than Safety, where we have a solid group (Allen/Landry/Bush/Miles).

@jimfan08  I'm thinking that CB is our biggest need on D, then Safety, then depth...

Nicks is a good call, and already lives in town lol!! And I hope Hill has a good year too cause it will now be his third....

For TE's give me Ebron or Amaro, and I'm good...

@Omari Brown  You don't need both Pace and Babin, just pick one or the other, draft a young guy to take over when he's ready and keep McIntyre for depth. Signing two veterans like that would be kind of redundant, though.

@Brendan  Tenn already has a big money CB, and apparently that ownership/management is pretty into the idea of positional allocation.

Also Mario Manningham could be cut loose from the 49ers as a cap casualty....

The Jets could get a value deal.   Manningham  could come cheap this year..

How many sacks did Pace have last year?

Omari Brown

I figured they'd do that and could still draft a young guy. Pace is great at setting the edge as Babin isn't much of a run stopper at this point. Coples can rush from almost anywhere on the line so a young OLB could used in pass rush situations to be eased into the system ie Suggs in Bmore. Rex could use a 4man front of Babin, young OLB, Wilk and Q.

@bob If he's REALLY cheap, sure. I was never a fan of his and think people have always overrated him.

Sheldon was fine Pas rushing last year.  He will continue to make strides this year.

Omari Brown

@Marcus Armstrong Sheldon is a great run stopper but  at THIS point Wilk and Q would generate more of a pass rush from interior than Hogg and Wilk would. Not discounting Sheldons impact at all

Absolutely!... that would be a dream I just think it would kind of foolish on Idziks part to rely on Pace at age 34 to replicate that production. Use him on first and second downs. Then let Babin and whichever young OlB(Dee Ford or Demarcus Lawrence from Boise who I like) pin their ears back and go!

Brendan
Brendan

@Omari Brown  Pace inexplicably jumped in per-play pass rushing production. I have no idea how, but if I had to assume I'd think it was the rest of the DL. Imagine someone better there (Babin) and you're looking at 4 guys with double-digit sack potential on 3rd downs.

@Brendan @bob

Played good in the super bowl for the Giants..I  see him as a #2 receiver..hes gonna have to take less money..which idzik likes
