Free Agency Watch: Catching Up
Here’s some notes on where the Jets stand this morning.
Gone Baby Gone
Former Jets DL Mike DeVito has signed with the Chiefs yesterday, and Sione Pouha was cut by the Jets (after what we can only assume was a refusal to re-do his deal). While the future of the defensive line will have to be around Coples and Wilkerson, they will still need to find some competent role players to take on the one or two other spots that now seem vacant on the line. Add in that Bryan Thomas, Calvin Pace and Bart Scott also won’t be back and this will be a very different looking front seven for this defense.
While the front seven will look drastically different, the defensive backfield could too. LaRon Landry is set to visit the Colts and would be a good fit there with Chuck Pagano’s club, Bell’s status with the team is uncertain and you might have heard it mentioned that the Jets are looking to trade Darrelle Revis. Kyle Wilson played most of the season for the Jets in replacement of Revis, but the group could only return one of four players from it’s opening day backfield of just a year ago.
What about Dustin Keller? Now that the Jared Cook and Marty Bennett puzzle pieces have fallen into place, Keller is supposedly heading to Miami for a visit. Keller was rumored to be in the mix with the Titans, but signing Delanie Walker will likely limit any interest in Keller. Keller could be a nice pairing for a pass offense in Miami and a big-armed quarterback like Tannehill and a top flight receiver like Wallace to take pressure off over the top. There might not be a lot of money left for Keller, but it might behoove him to take a one year deal with the Dolphins.
As for Shonn Greene, he has a scheduled visit set up with the Titans where he’d look to be the backup for Chris Johnson. Should Greene get inked there, his style of hard-nosed running is one that Munchak might appreciate.
Say Hello
The Jets are bringing in Brandon Gibson for a visit with the team today. Gibson seems to have interest from most of the AFC East teams, but might be a good fit for a WCO like the Jets will run in 2013 under Marty Morhinweg. If they don’t convince Gibson, look for the Jets to focus on Mohamed Massaquoi. Also, don’t forget about Braylon Edwards, who the Jets might still have interest in … but they don’t seem to be in much of a hurry to sign.
There’s also not been much if any news about Matt Slauson, other than some rumors about the Giants, Cowboys and Raiders … my hope is that the Jets are letting him quietly shop around before trying to re-sign him.
